Comments: Hello, I am writing about my Grandfather,
Edward John Bukowski. His 90th Birthday is on
December 14th and I would LOVE to put a biography of
his WW2 participation together for him. Here is what
I know so far:
Name: Edward John Bukowski
DOB: December 14, 1920
Place of Birth: Illinois
Place of Enlistment: Erie , Pennsylvania
His Basic Training was at Camp Van Dorn ,
Mississippi
After Basic Training, he landed in Morocco …then
went to Sicily …then up the Italian boot…all the way
to Southern/Eastern France. He dodged many bullets
along this path….thru Rome ; Monte Casino; Naples
and Venice . He said that he was VERY lucky to be
alive! He was in the 10th Mountain Division of, I
believe, the 393rd Infantry Division (99th Infantry
Division). Morocco, Sicily , Italian boot, Southern
France, Rome , Monte Cassino & Naples . There was
only one unit that was at all those locations, the
3rd Infantry Division.
In the unit history of the 3rd Infantry Division. On
page 451 I found listed PFC Edward J. Bukowski. He
was a member of the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd
Infantry Division. Could this be my Grandfather? If
so, do you have any information you can send my way?
I am really excited and look forward to hearing from
you.
Take care,
Mary Bukowski

of the book "History of the 3rd Division in WWII"
was a member of the 7th Infantry Regiment and maybe
one of his comrades will contact you.
Subject: Front Line paper
Hi, I have just found a special edition farewell
mock-up made for my father S/Sgt. William Arthur
Dryden who was managing editor of the Third Division
"Front Line" publication in WWII. I haven't seen
anything else on this little company paper; do you
have any info on it?
At the top of the front page under the flag name
FRONT LINE are the words: Korbach Bad Wildungen,
which may be where the men made the paper while in
Germany. It's dated March 2, 1946 which was about
the date my father left for home.
I know this isn't much detail but I'd love to know
anything at all about this little publication; not
just the mock-up his men made for his departure but
the day-to-day operations of the paper as well.
Thanks very much for your kind attention,
Marlene Dryden
Comments: Hello, I'm not sure if this is the right
place to submit my inquiry, but it's worth a shot.
My great uncle Radis Vise is said to be buried in
Epinal American Cemetery in Epinal , France , having
served in the 7th Infantry Regiment 3rd Infantry
Division. I was hoping someone could help me find
out where I can acquire more information about his
service -- anything really. Please let me know what
your thoughts are. This is something important to my
family as I'm sure it is to many others.
Thank you for your time,
Teresa Vice
Webmaster's Note: Pvt Radis A. Vise is listed as a
member of the 7th Infantry Regiment Killed in
Action, in the book "History of the 3rd Division in
WWII" on page 475.

Subject: AARs for the 7th,
15th, and 30th Infantry Regiments in WW2
Comments:
I have just started a big work on map for the months
of August and September 1944 in Southern France. I
was able to obtain a few AAR's from the 36th
Division and the 45th but I have no clue on how to
obtain AAR's for the 7th, 15th and 30th regiments
and perhaps the 3rd Recon Troop. Do you have any of
these? If not do you know someone whom I could ask?
I managed to find a program which translates WW2 map
coordinates into actual 2010 map coordinates. I'm
really having fun pinpointing certain ambushes and
roadblocks.
I will be in Southern France mid August for the
ceremonies.
With kind regards from Switzerland,
Gilles

Subject: Pfc Domingo S. Ledesma - 7th Infantry

Comments: I have been working on our family
geneology for the last 3-4 years. I am close to
completing it with the exception of one great uncle
- Domingo S. Ledesma - who was killed-in-action on
10/13/43.
According to the bits of information that I have
been able to come up with, the date of death
corresponds with the Volturno River Crossing.
I made an attempt to get some information directly
from the military personal records division but was
informed that only immediate family members could
get the information. Since Domingo's mother, father,
brother and sister have passed, that option is
closed.
Fortunately, I ran across this website and wanted to
ask if anyone has information on my great uncle.
Anything would be greatly appreciated.
According to the info I was able to obtain, he was
in the 3rd Infantry Division, 7th Infantry Regiment,
Company L. His date of death is 10/13/43. His body
was returned in 1946 and he is buried in San
Antonio, Texas - San Fernando Cemetery.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Pvt. Louis H. Klopfer mia Marme 1918
Comments: Ahoy 3rd Division,
I bought an old mandolin at a garage sale. The
mandolin had been hanging for many years in an
antique store on Long Island, NY before its trip to
the garage sale. Engraved in the top of the mandolin
is what appears to be ports of call along the east
coast of NY and NJ and many initials and symbols.
There is a clear epitaph for L. Klopfer ,killed
Battle of Marne, July 15th, 1918 I believe this
mandolin was played by guys in his unit and may have
made the trip to France and back. Marme Memorial
Cemetery has listed a Louis H. Klopfer as missing in
action in the Battle of Marme 1918 I am trying to
find PVT Lewis H. Klopfer's family in NY city where
he was from to return the mandolin to his relatives.
Pvt. Klopfer was a member of 38th infantry regiment,
3rd division. Any information on this soldier would
be appreciated. If I can't find the family would you
like the mandolin?

a Pvt. in the 15th Infantry Regiment 3rd Infantry

buried at the American Cemetery in Epinal, France.
It is my information that he was resting on a box in
a foxhole when a grenade was lobbed in and exploded.
I would like to find more information to confirm
this, for example, what battle this occurred in?
He was a Private when he died but he had previously
been a Sergeant twice, and had been busted down to
Pvt. for fighting. I will be sending for his
military records, but I was hoping that there may be
photos or personal accounts of his life in the
service out there. He has no siblings left, but I am

Subject: BBC TV series - Operation Husky, WW2
Comments: Dear Sir/Madam,
Here at the BBC, we are planning a major new WW2
documentary series. This may well not happen for
several months, but for now, I have a (kind of
urgent!) question for you, which might help us know
how to proceed.
I am trying to find out if there are men or women,
part of the Society of the 3rd Infantry Division who
served in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily,
who might be willing and able to share their
memories of this particular operation in 1943.
The actual filming is of course a way off, but do
you think you might be able to suggest a couple of
names to fit the bill, in the next 24 hrs or so?
At this stage, a couple of names with a few lines
about their involvement, would help me take this
project to the next stage: if there are suitable
candidates, it would take our production in a
particular direction, and if not, in a different
one!
I'd be very happy to call you tomorrow if that
suits.
Thanks in advance and best wishes,

Comments: Hello,
My name is Heather Johnson, proud granddaughter of
the late PFC Peter Mercurio. I am writing today not
to inquire on behalf of my grandfather, as you in
the past have kindly helped point my mother and I in
the right direction when it came to replacing his
metals. However, today my inquiry is regarding my
grandmother, Sadie Mercurio who will be turning 90
years young in December. I have been in contact with
the 3rd ID in Virginia and they are being ever so
kind as to have a commanding General write a
congratulatory birthday greeting for her birthday so
that we could present it to her. You wouldn't
believe it but at 90, she still wears her 3rd ID pin
on EVERYTHING, evening gowns included. I was hoping
that you could help or at least point me the correct
way, as to locate perhaps a member within our area.
We would be honored if they could donate 20 min of
their time to present this letter to her. As I'm
aware the generation surrounding WWII is shrinking
by the day, so I'm unbiased as to what war they
served in. My hope is to just have someone from the
division join us and make her day. We will be
setting an empty setting for Grandpa on this day....
We have encompassed his spirit in almost everything
we are doing for her, including parts of the toast
which quote FDR's fireside talks.
I would appreciate any insight or help you would be
able to provide me.
Thank you very much.

Heather

How to Request Military Service Records or Prove Military
Service
The National Personnel Records Center
is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access
to get copies of documents from their military files. Military veterans and
the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online
military personnel records system to request documents, including Discharge
Documents DD 214.
Because the requester will be asked to supply all information essential
for NPRC to process the request, delays that normally occur will be
minimized. The new web-based application was designed to provide better
service on these requests by eliminating the records center's mailroom
processing time.
Former military personnel and their dependents can get more information at
the National Archives website. Military personnel records can be used for
proving military service, or as a valuable tool in genealogical research.
Most veterans and their next-of-kin can obtain free copies of their DD Form
214 (Report of Separation) and other military and medical records several
ways:
