REQUEST #5533 Name: Richard Springer Email: richard.springer@va.gov Subject: Veterans claim assist I am trying to obtain information verifying an incident for a Veteran, Theodore Crivello, who was a member of HHC 1/7 3rd Infantry Division. The Veteran is claiming residuals of injuries sustained July 4, 1953 when he was with Col. R.A. REQUEST #5519 Name: Herzig, Jürg St. Laurentiusstrasse 12 CH-4613 Rickenbach SO Switzerland Phone: ++41 62 216 03 86 E-Mail: outlaws@bluewin.ch Subject: Battle of Sigolsheim, France December 1944 - 15th Infantry , 3rd Division 3 Comments: Dear Sirs My name is Juerg Herzig, I am a 44 year old researcher of the Alsace Campaign and the Colmar Pocket from Switzerland. Although Switzerland was not at war with Germany, however my grandpa was defending the Swiss border from 1939 to 1945 in case the Germans would also attack Switzerland. I have been visiting the former Battle site many times. I am the owner/webmaster of the WW2 history website „Stand where they fought“. I am researching the Alsace Campaign next to others and I have a a special interest in the Sigolsheim fighting after the 3rd Diviosn took over from the 36th. I have therefore a question to the Battle of Sigolsheim: During the final days of the Battle of Sigolsheim in December 1944. Specific from December 19 to December 27, 1944. On December 19, 1944 in A. Hugel book, “we have been enemies (Wir waren Feinde)” former German Grenadier Werner Schaller is telling, that in the afternoon there was an allied attack supported by tanks. 5 tanks attacked the south-west part at the Mittelmill and one tank with infantry and half-trucks attacking from the north west coming from Kientzheim Friedhofweg. All 6 tanks have been knocked out. Now I have a friend whose German Grand-Dad was fighting in Sigolsheim and was killed there. In a letter written by his former platoon leader is said, that this Grenadier was promoted to NCO as well as awarded the IC 2nd class after he knocked out two allied tanks coming from Kientzheim as well and were about to overrun the German command post which was in the monastery. I can’t find any after action report where those two tanks are mentioned. Do you have any idea if those two additional tanks belonged to the assault group using the Friedhofweg? Another question is, this Grenadier was wounded on Dec. 27 while attacking a Tank coming from the rue de Bennwihr and he was at the cemetery at Chapelle Ste Anne. Do you know when the US launched the attacked? It was the 15th Infantry who attacked but do you have any idea at what time the attack was launched and to what unit the tanked belonged? Therefore I am looking for veterans who took part in this battle. Any information is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance and I am looking forward to hear from you soon. Cordial Greetings, Juerg Herzig http://standwheretheyfought.jimdo.com/ |

George Davis, who served with Co. F, 15th Inf. Rgt., during World War II. I met him during the 3rd ID Association Reunion in 1999. At the time, I was a private myself, only a few months out of AIT. I was assigned to the 3rd ID Public Affairs Office and was supporting the reunion. I spent quite a bit of time interviewing Mr. Davis for an article I wrote for the Frontline newspaper. Today, I'm a SFC (P), still working in public affairs and loving practically every minute of being a Soldier, NCO, and public affairs representative. With the announcement of CSM Plumley's death today, I reflected on how fortunate I was to have the opportunity to speak with Mr. Davis all those years ago. Every day we are losing more of our WW II veterans, and they are an amazing inspiration to those of us who serve today. If possible, I'd like the opportunity to thank Mr. Davis for the impact he had on me and my career so many years ago. I can be reached at 443-527-0503, or by email at stephanie.l.carl.mil@mail.mil. Thank you. V/R SFC Stephanie L. Carl |

REQUEST #5509 Name: SSG Eakin, Kevin A Email: kevin.a.eakin@gmail.com > Subject: Kelley Hill, Fort Benning Comment: Hello. I am SSG Eakin, Kevin A. I am trying to do some research on Kelley Hill (where I am stationed) Currently deployed. I am trying to find out the history of Kelley Hill on Fort Benning and who is it named after. I came up with 2 possibilities after 6 hours of searching the internet. I hope you can help me out a little. My first hit was a Yahoo post, with no credible links or help, but it stated SGT James Kelley a Native of Atlanta Georgia is who Kelley Hill is named after. The second is believe is the battle for outpost Kelley in the Korean war to honor all the men that were wounded or that lost their life there. I can not find any information on Kelley Hill, except little pieces. I know there was an Air Assault Unit there sometime about 1968 or so. I know it first started off as a place where Soldiers did Basic Training, before Harmony Church and Sand Hill. But it seems in some way or fashion 3rd BDE, SLEDGEHAMMER has always occupied Kelley Hill, under different names, and different brigades, but always keeping the traditions with them. 2/69 FA was one of the Air Assualt units that was there in 196???? and it is still there today. There is a lot of history and I would really like to know if you can point me in the right direction. I am actually doing a paper for my history class and I would deeply appreciate any assistance you may be able to give me. Thank you for your time. God Bless, SSG Eakin |

REQUEST #5508 Name: Lisa Brown Email: ladyemp@gmail.com Subject: Looking for information on my grandfather Comment: He wouldn’t talk about his time in the service with anyone and nobody knows very much about it. His uniform, awards and all of his paperwork except for one DD-214 were destroyed in a flood. I can tell you that he was a private first class in company M, 22nd infantry. His name is Edward David Walters. I can even send you a copy of his DD-214 if it would help find any information on him. I have tried multiple avenues to try to get information on him and all have come to a screeching halt, I keep getting told that the information is not there. I’ve been told that there’s a DD-214 after the one I have, but the “normal routes” tell me that all of his records were destroyed in a fire. I’ve been told that he has a purple heart, but it’s not listed on the DD-214 that I have. What little information I have been able to get was through my husband doing some research using his contacts as a veteran himself, one of the pieces of information we were told was that his unit is a unit that is only active during wartime and that any other time the information on that unit is sealed for reasons of national security. How accurate this is, I have no idea. My oldest son is very interested in the military and would like to know more about his Great Grandfather’s Military career. Unfortunately what information we have is not much. My son has had 3 heart surgeries and is looking at a 4th, as well as having had 2 strokes. My Grandfather’s serial number is 7-031-860, DOB 19 Mar 1918, Kankakee, Ill. He enlisted 12 Jun 1940 in Chicago. Duty Soldier III (590) Combat Infantryman, Battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, GO 33 WD 45 Rhineland GO 40 WD 45 Any other information I can give you that might help with finding information on him is yours as long as I know it. I would greatly appreciate any information I can get on my grandfather. Lisa Brown Response: Lisa, I am sorry but the 22nd Infantry was not in the 3rd Infantry Division and we wouldn't have any records of him in our files/archives. I doubt unit records would be sealed at this date at the National Archives. The 22nd Infantry has been on active duty since before WWII and has not been completely inactivated at any time since that I am aware of. It participated in Overlord on 6 June 44 and was part of the 4th Infantry Division. My recommendation would be to travel to the National Archives at College Park, Maryland, locate the 22nd Infantry Records, and look for the S-1 papers (Administration). they may contain any orders published authorizing the Purple Heart or any other medals he may have been awarded. It is a sad fact that many DD 214s for WWII veterans are incomplete and incorrect, as there was such a big rush to demobilize soldiers and send them home. Hope this helps. Rock of the Marne! Tim |

Can anyone tell me what happened with the approx 70 dead German soldiers lying in front of the schoolhouse? Where have they being buried as I am researching a German Grenadier who was killed there on Dec. 27 1944. I was told that the killed Germans have been buried in a mass grave near the soccer field. Grenadier Walter Laich, knocked out two tanks using Panzerfaust on December 19, 1944 near the monatery. Has anyone knowledge that the Americans lost two tanks on December 19 near the monastery? I know that on this day 5 tanks from Kientzheim where attacking Sigolsheim but all have been knocked out – 4 by a German officer and one by a German anti tank gun so it cant be Walter Laich. On December 27, 1944 he was near the cemetery attacking another tank with a Panzerfaust but was severely wounded during the firefight. Cordial Greetings, Juerg Herzig |

My husband was stationed in Giebelstadt Germany with the 3rd Infantry Division as a weather officer with the Air Force. Retired, we now do a veterans expo each year in association with The Salvation Army. The Program is called VEAP (Veterans Easy Access Program) and we have vendors from many military, government, local and national agencies who come together one day each year all in one place to give information and services to veterans and active duty. We also honor two active duty from our local 29 Palms Marine Base, and two distinguished veterans from our local area. I have attached a picture taken the first year of our Expo at the Indio Armory. We have been growing. This year we have, as our key note speaker, Secretary Peter Gravett, California Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Joining him on the stage will be Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack, Assemblymen Brian Nestande and Manuel Perez, and County Supervisor John Benoit. Mike Moore will be portraying FDR. He is a member of CHG 2nd Armored Division, Military Vehicle Owners of Orange County and The Flying Tigers AVG Living History Group. Mike was with us last year. Now the information I need. What is the procedure to be considered for an appearance by some of your folks? We will be at the Riverside County Fair Grounds this year on Saturday, October 27. It is a short day. The expo opens at 9 and runs through 1:30. It is a free event and includes free hot dogs, snacks, beverages, etc. If you could help by making an appearance, it would be a blessing. We will have an outside display with a Half-Track provided by the Patton Museum, and we are expecting a display, as yet undetermined to be provided by the Palm Springs Air Museum. REQUEST #5484 Name: Lisa Preston E-mail: lisapreston@optonline.net Subject: William J. McLee Comments: Hello, My great-uncle died before I met him, and months before my mom was born. My grandad (William McLee's baby Brother) did not ever talk about him, not even to his 8 children. Following the recent deaths of grand parents and great aunts and uncles, I am doing a lot of family tree research (so my young nieces and nephews don't lose the trail) and cannot find much on my uncle other than that he is buried at the Sicily-Rome American cemetery, received a Purple Heart, and died 2-25-1944 (probably) at Anzio. He enlisted (or was drafted?) in NYC. Their mom died at my grandad's birth, and he lost touch with his other brother as well as his dad. It is possible his death was something that impacted them all so much they stopped talking but I will never know the reason now. Both my grandparents and a 2nd uncle who was named for William J are now deceased. None of us has info about what happened to Uncle William other than that he died and was buried in military plot. I think it important to be informed so the younger members of the family can recognize the honor of his service as well. The notation for my uncle on the abm overseas grave website notes that he is listed as CPL William McLee. It also says he was with the 4065th unit. I cannot find 4065 as a listed unit on any docs I find for the 5th Army but one does reference 4065 Quartermaster Service Company as being attached to a 263 or 249 QM battalion. I'm confused because I cannot think how QM service company member would normally be getting a Purple Heart. Did Anzio get so bad that service company was fighting? I have tried reading online excerpts of Anzio vet diaries and the period from 2/16 or 2/19 thru to 2/25 seems to always be not fully noted, if at all. Often the 2/26 notes say some relief came in for the fighting. Can we find out what could have happened? He also would probably have been listed as colored although my understanding also is that their mom was Native Amaerican. The closest I have come to finding out what (I think) happened is finding PVT Paul G.Brown's diary page but the version I found from some years back did not cover the dates in February. And I don't even know if William was 3rd or 7th or 45th. The numbering is SO confusing. Hope someone can help & thanks! Lisa Preston |

REQUEST #5483 Name: Reindel, Jim Email: jreindel@amgen.com Subject: Osfort Story Comments: I enjoyed visiting the website to follow a bit of history of the 3rd Division. My father was in the 3rd Division and was wounded at Anzio with grenade schrapnel entering the nose and coming into the top of his mouth. He was patched up in Naples and sent back to the invasion of southern France. I had been with him on several trips to Germany but he didn’t talk much about the war except a few small stories particularly around the occupation days in Salzburg. He kept in touch with the family that owned the Gasthaus that was the battalion headquarters (Gasthaus John) near the banhoff in Salzburg. One story he briefly alluded to was about a half track they loaded up with explosives and drove it into a fort wall. He said it didn’t explode so they used mortar rounds to set it off. He spoke German fluently and he talked the Germans inside into giving up in the German language and the number of prisoners were around 84. It was covered in our local news paper clippings. He received the bronze star for his activities. He never remembered the name of the site but he said it was around Strassburg and my visit to Colmar and the Alsace area brought back some of his memories. Nice to see some more history on the website. He passed away some 12 years ago. I still have many of his photos and some are from his tour through Kassle, Obersalzburg, Nuremburg, and Salzburg. I know during the WWII (circa 1945 I think) there was quite a bit of activity there. My mother is from this Italian village; I may be grasping at straws but I’ve been trying to track down some photos of the village at it may have been in those days. Nobody in the village has any photos of that time as none of them had cameras. I’m assuming that many of the American forces personnel had camera and may have taken photos at that time; especially as I believe some of the German forces may have surrendered to the Allies in or around Pontelatone. Does anyone have any idea how I may go about contacting any American ex-forces member or their current families who may have any photos? Kind Regards, Mike |

REQUEST #5474 Name: Kristian Pierce Email: xhitmanx@gmail.com Subject: Co. M of the 7th Infantry -WWI Comments: Let me start off by apolgizing for any bother. I'm sure you get "bugged" by many for information. I am trying to gather some information on a great uncle on my dad's side of the family. He was a member of Company M, 7th infantry WW I. His full name was Marvin "Bud" Cecil Robinson. Tennessee. I have one photo of him in uniform (my father is having problems finding it, but I know that we have that photo) His grave marker lists: Marvin C Robinson Tennessee Co.M of the 7th Infantry WWI I am trying to get some information for my father and any lead would be helpful. Below is what i have found on google. Bud lived in Carroll Co., TN (no town or city state) according to his WWI Draft Registration Card and says he was tall, medium build, with blue eyes and black hair. He served in WW I as a Private in Co.M of the 7th Infantry. Thank you for any help you give. Kristian Pierce |

REQUEST #5472 Name: Tim Joseph Email: timjoseph@timjoseph.com Subject: Fathers WWII History Research Comments: Dear sir/madam, Kindly, Steve Dixon of the 70th Infantry Division Association directed me towards your site after resolving a mystery for me on my fathers, Arthur James Joseph, service in WWII. His discharge papers show him a member of the 70th (then only papers I have as the rest appear to have been lost in the records fire) but Steve, looking at his service record, believes he was transferred to the 70th after hostilities ended to transfer home and believes he was a 3rd Division Veteran. Battles and Campaigns: Naples Foggia Southern France GO 33 ED 45 Rome Arno Rhineland GO 40 WD 45 Central Europe GO 48 WD 45 I was hoping that you might be able to direct me to any information resources about his service during the war. His discharge papers are attached in the CCE00000.PDF file. Thanks in advance for any direction you may be able to provide. My 13 year old daughter is traveling to the WWII Memorial this weekend with her student counsel class and this has driven me to try and find some information about where dad fought. He spoke little about it as I grew up. Regards, Tim Joseph - timjoseph@timjoseph.com 1- 281-802-3412 Cell |

REQUEST #5469 Name: Domenic Pastore Jr. Address: 65 Leuba Road City,State, ZIP: Coventry, RI 02816 Email: dpast32@aol.com Subject: Company E (2nd Bn) 15th Inf. / 3rd Inf. Div. Comments: Hello, I am currently attempting to document the circumstances surrounding the death of SGT. Ernest F. MATHIAS, asn 31148036 of Providence, Rhode Island. Sgt. Mathias was assigned to the 3rd Division's Company E (2nd Battalion) 15th Infantry Regt. As far as I can discern, he was initially listed as an MIA, during E Co.'s assault on enemy positions during the "Anzio Breakout", on May 23, 1944. (Re: Operation Buffalo) Sometime later, on or about 17 July 1944, his body was located by GRS personnel in the vicinity of the May 23rd attack. His official status was now changed from MIA to KIA. As I'm sure your'e well aware, the events of 23 May 1944 were extremely hectic, & tend to resist any attempt at compiling into a usable timeline. From my brief look into the day's action(s), I found that E/15 initiated one of the few documented bayonet charges to have occuted during WW2 !! That charge may have been when & where Sgt Mathias became KIA ? If your organization has ANY information that may be of use to me in my research, I would DEEPLY APPRECIATE your assistance. I am especially interested in any data related to E/15 during May & June 1944, if you happen to have such data available. I THANK YOU in advance for your kind assistance, & will eagerly await your reply. Best Regards, Dom Pastore Jr. |

Comments: Hi, I was just looking at your website for people trying to find out about ancestors who have a military background, and Im not sure if anyone can help, but it's worth a try!. I am trying to find my mother's father, all I know is that he was based in Maindy Barracks in Cardiff, Wales around 1937, my mum was born in 1938. My nan would never talk about it, and there is no father's name on my mother's birth certificate, we think he was an American Soldier, I don't know what regiment he would have been in, my only hope is that someone may have had a relative who served there during that time, so at least I could find out which units were based there then. My mum's mum was called Iris Whitcombe, and I would really love to help my mum find out something. Any help at all would be great!! |

At that time on post there was a Marne Garden and in it was a large bronze statue of the 3rd Division’s Dogface Soldier as shown on page 29 of the most recent edition of The Watch on the Rhine. What became of that statue. It was quite large and I’m sure expensive to move. Is it at Fort Stewart? I know the post has been returned to the Germans and I know the 1st Division was there for some time before that. Could you let me know? Thanks. REQUEST #5463 Name: Jeffrey Freeman Email: JFree99877@aol.com Subject: My Grandfather in the 76th Dear Sir, Comments: My grandfather Samuel Zerbe served in the 76th field artillery (Bat A) 3rd Division and served through the war, and right through the post war occupation in Coblenz Germany. He was president of Society of the 3rd Division 1967 at the reunion city of Tacoma Washington. I am looking for any information of the 3rd's post armistice period as an occupation force in Coblenz. I have found very little, and would like to compile a more complete account of that time for him. After the fraternization ban was lifted, my grandfather met my grandmother (a German national) at a local dance held by the German Red Cross. They ended up marrying in 1920 and she emigrated with my grandfather in 1921 to United States. I am also looking for any information about the 1967 Society reunion where there were quite a few members from the 76th present as I remember as a child him talking about it. Any information you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jeffrey Freeman I have attached several photos, and have more if you are interested. I also have a hard back book of the 3rd divisions service record from 1917 through 1919 which was printed in Germany and offered to all veterans of the 3rd back in 1922.

REQUEST #5454 Name: marcy taber Cell: 405.623.0737 (Cell) Email: mgwes@cox.net Subject Would appreciate help or direction! Comments: Dear Sir---I apologize for the intrusion but I'm in need of help or direction. My husband, John H. Westerhoff, III. was a WWII veteran serving as an Infantry Officer in the Fifth Division of General George S. Patton's Third Army. He was taken prisoner in the latter stages of the war and was the recipient of the Silver and Bronze Stars, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, European Theatre of Operation Medal with four battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation. John passed away 29th March 1998. I found out a year ago that I might be entitled to spouse benefits. My problem however I have no "hard copy" support for the above and unless I find someway for documentation the VFW is saying it doesn't exist. I am appealing their decision. I have printed off the information of The Fifth Infantry Division WWII and it exactly as John told me...we even retraced his steps in 1989 starting in France all the way to the end of his duty. John was 22 years older than me and obviously both his parents are deceased and I have a feeling that is where his history was kept. If you have any suggestion, ideas, web sites that I'm missing to help me in this process it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your attention to the above. I look forward to hearing from you. Marcy G. Westerhoff 405.623.0737 (Cell) mgwes@cox.net |

I am trying to put together a shadow box for my father and am not having much luck finding any information. I have his 214 form but nothing else. Apparently, his personnel file was lost in a fire at the NPRC. I know he served as a Cpl (T) in the 2nd platoon, 3rd recon company, 3rd ID. He was in Korea from Nov 1953 - April 1955. I’m trying to figure out what distinctive insignia he would have worn on a garrison cap. I have his 1st infantry regiment pin from training but am looking for insignia from units he was transferred to while in Korea. I’m also confused as most of the history of the 3rd ID says it left Korea in Oct. 1954 but my dad would have been there 6 more months????? Sincerely, Kurt Rossi |

REQUEST #5433 Name: David Hannah Email: hannahd@trinity-health.org Subject: Loring A. Hannah - Scout and Observer 30th Infantry Regiment WWII Comments: I am one of six children of a Father who was a Scout and Observer in WWII (Discharged Special Tech 4). I would like to know if there are any living men who may have served with him or new him. I'm not sure where and exactly when he entered Africa, but know he was there and in the Sicily invasion, Italy (in Anzio where he was paralyzed two months, before being sent back in); earned his Bronze Star between Anzio and Rome, On to Corsica and eventually Austria, But know little of his story beyond the Infantry Regiment and Third Division books he received. Can you lead to those who can fill in his history? Loring A. Hannah - Private with 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division. His unit used the Boar Head insignia. My mother said his nick name was Sure Shot Hannah. He was a scout and observer through whole war (He never would talk about the war itself, so I never got to know all he did or when he entered in Africa). He was a special operations tech (although back then it may not have had the term Special Forces). After he died I got a German Ceremonial sword from my aunt (Dad's Oldest Sister); One brother told me that the aunt was told to keep good care of it by dad ( he said: "because you don't know what the hell I went through to get it). My younger brother who was in the Marine Corp. Talked to Dad when he was in the Nursing Home about a sword; and years later when I told him I had a sword dad got in the war; my brother asked if I knew how he got it and I said no; he told me that dad told him about it when he was on leave, and that he went on a recon mission into the German Headquarters and on his way out, he swiped the sword from an officer's bed. Dad had two Purple Hearts (one I didn't know about until after his death, which was from a bullet through the leg); Then I think TWO MONTHs into the four month battle at Anzio, where the building he was in was blown up on him and 9 other men. Someone stacked 100, 80mm mortar shells outside the building in full view of the enemy and they fired mortars, hitting our 100 and blowing the building up on him and the rest. He did tell me that he was unconscious and in the third hour he heard men going by saying that there was no one alive lets get out of here. Luckily those in charge ordered a dig out and of the 10 men, my dad was one of 5 that survived. He was paralyzed for two months and recuperated and was sent back into combat. Shortly after this between Anzio and Rome he was awarded a Bronze Star for digging an observation post for the company commander for an impending offensive action, He and three (or four) other men went 50 yards into enemy lines and dug with canteen cups and spoons as picks and shovels left them to prone to enemy attack. His citation states that they were in a 15 minute fire fight with a German Jeep patrol and shortly after that Mortar rounds were placed on their position landing as close as 10 yards. It says they completed their task after 5 and one half hours of work. He went on through Corsica and Southern France and I believe his were the first troops into Susuburgh, Austria. Thanks, David A. Hannah, FHFMA Senior Reimbursement Specialist Trinity Health - Webmaster's Note: Pfc Loring A. Hannah 30th Infantry Regt. HQ Co is listed in the book "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" as recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for action in cisterna Di Littoria May 20, 1944 on Page 413. and on Page 518 in the roster section of the 30th Infantry Regiment. |

REQUEST #5431 Name: David Richardson Email: voodoocrew@hotmail.com Subject: Search for record of friends service in 3rd ID Normany and other invasions. Comments: I have a friend who served in the 3 ID in Normany and North Africa, Utah beach, etc ( I was told ), and I'm trying to see if I can find a roster listing him. He is 90 years old and supposedly the last survivor of his unit. His name is Maynard Robbins, from Lenoir, NC. His health is failing and I wanted to get some memorabilia things for him. REQUEST #5430 Name: Clint Thompson Email: cthompson@eustaceisd.net Subject: Colmar Pocket Comments: Dear Sir or Madame, My name is Clint Thompson. I am a graduate student at the University of Texas at Tyler . I have a two part request. First, I am looking for information about My gradfather. His name was Lavere Thompson and served In the 30th Infantry regiment(Co K) and was wounded in the Colmar Pocket in January, 1945. Second, I am attempting to gather research on the 3rd Infantry division during its time fighting in the Colmar Pocket. I have noticed that there are no works dedicated to the Colmar Pocket, only parts of books. If all goes well this will be what I write my Masters Thesis over as well as my Doctoral Dissertation when the time comes. What I am looking for is where I could find material over the subject. This could be anywhere from books, memoirs, combat dispatches, veterans stories, etc. If at all possible I would like to be a able to talk to or correspond with veterans if at all possible. I don't know how successful this will be but any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, Clint Thompson |
