REQUEST #5440 Name: Ray Heltsley Email: ramar01@comcast.net Subject: J.R. Heslep, 3rd Infantry Division, WWI Comments: Hello, A friend, who lives in Washington State, recently came across a U.S. Model of 1917 helmet in his barn. The leather band inside was inscribed, by what appears to be a fountain pen, "J.R. Heslep, 3rd Division". He would like to find out if any of this soldier's descendants would like to have this helmet. I believe that only family is allowed access to a soldier's military records, I was wondering if your web site had any resources as far as locating any of Heslep's family members. Or could you possibly suggest a direction that I can take towards this goal? Thank You, Ray Heltsley Coupeville, WA |

REQUEST #5439 Name:Steve Solbakken Email: sunnyhill52@yahoo.com Subject: 203rd Support Battalion Comments: Yesterday at an auction in NC I purchased a framed 203rd flag that refers to Nijmegen. Some research indicates that in Sept 1944 there was an Allied offensive around that Dutch city, intended to open up supply routes into France and Germany. Was the 203 involved in that battle? If it was and you have a museum there I'd like to donate this framed reunion flag from 1989. Thanks Steve Solbakken Kannapolis, NC |

REQUEST #5433 Name: David Hannah Email: hannahd@trinity-health.org Subject: Loring A. Hannah - Scout and Observer 30th Infantry Regiment WWII Comments: I am one of six children of a Father who was a Scout and Observer in WWII (Discharged Special Tech 4). I would like to know if there are any living men who may have served with him or new him. I'm not sure where and exactly when he entered Africa, but know he was there and in the Sicily invasion, Italy (in Anzio where he was paralyzed two months, before being sent back in); earned his Bronze Star between Anzio and Rome, On to Corsica and eventually Austria, But know little of his story beyond the Infantry Regiment and Third Division books he received. Can you lead to those who can fill in his history? Loring A. Hannah - Private with 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division. His unit used the Boar Head insignia. My mother said his nick name was Sure Shot Hannah. He was a scout and observer through whole war (He never would talk about the war itself, so I never got to know all he did or when he entered in Africa). He was a special operations tech (although back then it may not have had the term Special Forces). After he died I got a German Ceremonial sword from my aunt (Dad's Oldest Sister); One brother told me that the aunt was told to keep good care of it by dad ( he said: "because you don't know what the hell I went through to get it). My younger brother who was in the Marine Corp. Talked to Dad when he was in the Nursing Home about a sword; and years later when I told him I had a sword dad got in the war; my brother asked if I knew how he got it and I said no; he told me that dad told him about it when he was on leave, and that he went on a recon mission into the German Headquarters and on his way out, he swiped the sword from an officer's bed. Dad had two Purple Hearts (one I didn't know about until after his death, which was from a bullet through the leg); Then I think TWO MONTHs into the four month battle at Anzio, where the building he was in was blown up on him and 9 other men. Someone stacked 100, 80mm mortar shells outside the building in full view of the enemy and they fired mortars, hitting our 100 and blowing the building up on him and the rest. He did tell me that he was unconscious and in the third hour he heard men going by saying that there was no one alive lets get out of here. Luckily those in charge ordered a dig out and of the 10 men, my dad was one of 5 that survived. He was paralyzed for two months and recuperated and was sent back into combat. Shortly after this between Anzio and Rome he was awarded a Bronze Star for digging an observation post for the company commander for an impending offensive action, He and three (or four) other men went 50 yards into enemy lines and dug with canteen cups and spoons as picks and shovels left them to prone to enemy attack. His citation states that they were in a 15 minute fire fight with a German Jeep patrol and shortly after that Mortar rounds were placed on their position landing as close as 10 yards. It says they completed their task after 5 and one half hours of work. He went on through Corsica and Southern France and I believe his were the first troops into Susuburgh, Austria. Thanks, David A. Hannah, FHFMA Senior Reimbursement Specialist Trinity Health - Webmaster's Note: Pfc Loring A. Hannah 30th Infantry Regt. HQ Co is listed in the book "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" as recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for action in cisterna Di Littoria May 20, 1944 on Page 413. and on Page 518 in the roster section of the 30th Infantry Regiment. |

I am a graduate student at the University of Texas at Tyler . I have a two part request. First, I am looking for information about My gradfather. His name was Lavere Thompson and served In the 30th Infantry regiment(Co K) and was wounded in the Colmar Pocket in January, 1945. Second, I am attempting to gather research on the 3rd Infantry division during its time fighting in the Colmar Pocket. If all goes well this will be what I write my Masters Thesis over as well as my Doctoral Dissertation when the time comes. What I am looking for is where I could find material over the subject. This could be anywhere from books, memoirs, combat dispatches, veterans stories, etc. If at all possible I would like to be a able to talk to or correspond with veterans if at all possible. I don't know how successful this will be but any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, Clint Thompson |

REQUEST #5427 Email: hosco6@aol.com Subject: John H. Gavin Jr. DOW 1/24/1945 Comments: Gentlemen, first, thank you for doing this. I am tracking the story of US Army PVT John H. Gavin Jr., Svc No. 31231271, from Manchester, Massachusetts, my late mother's brother. I am doing this with the idea of eventually telling his story. He was assigned to Company B, 290th Engineer Combat Bn, which was attached for a few weeks to serve as infantry with the 112th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. He was a BAR man, and went MIA on 1/23/1945 near Colmar, and DOW on 1/24/1945. I do not know how the 28th's area of responsibility related to the 3d Infantry AO although I believe you were in the same area. I am just taking a chance that you may be able to refer me to information about what was happening in that area during the time my uncle lost his life. I would appreciate any assistance or recommendations. Thank you, Robert G Kilpatrick 22 West Point Rd East Hampton CT 06424 860-256-7527 cell hosco6@aol.com |

REQUEST #5425 Name: Kendida Tilley Email: kttilley@gmail.com Subject: Looking for a photo of a flag for gift My dad served in the 1st battle group of the 3rd infantry division with basic training in fort benning ga. then stationed in Aschaffenburg Germany. He was enlisted in Nov. 1958- Oct. 1960 approximately. His company was company D. I'm trying to find the correct flag or any pictures of a flag they may have used specific to that company so that I may have a flag made for him as a gift. Every year he goes to a company D reunion and I would really like to find something so I can really surprise my dad because he always speaks so highly of his time in the company and the men he served beside. He would really enjoy the flag flying below his American flag in our front yard. If it helps any more while in Germany he stayed in the graves barracks which I know has a different name in German starting with a B. I hope I have provided enough info to assist in helping me find a flag specific to his company. Thanks so much for taking the time to read my message. I have been with the Division for over 5 years and have a huge interest in the Division’s History. We are building a new Team Stewart Website and I have been doing massive amounts of research for the history of this great Division. The goal is to represent the entire history in a new light. To do this I am reaching out to anyone who can help. Your site has been amazing for this, but I want to take this even further. 1) I saw a book in the library call “The Third Infantry Division in Korea” that was sponsored by the Society and was wondering if it is available via your store or any other place I could get a copy? 2) Also, I am currently searching for the names of every soldier that gave the ultimate sacrifice in combat with the Marne Division. I have completed the lists for Iraq/Afghanistan, Korea and has the full list for World War II. I will need some help with World War I though. I am currently using the American Battle Monuments Commission to track most of the names down, but I know I will wind up short. Do you have any resources that may be of use for this? Tucker, SN: 38 356 049. He landed in North Africa in early 1943 and was part of the initial invasion of Sicily in mid 1943. There is a possibility that he was with the 3rd Infantry Division at that time. Is there a way to check your records for a PFC Ellis D. He served with Company E, 141 Infantry, 36th Division in France and Germany. I am trying to find the unit(s) he served with in North Africa and Italy. I have been in touch with the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis and his file was lost in the 1973 fire. I have some records from his time with the 36th. I have, in my possession a victory medal articulating the battles in which he fought. Respectfully James E. Finnegan |

#5409 Name:Todd & Debbie Manske Email: dtmanske@gmail.com Subject: Souvenir Question Comments: In the 1950's my father-in-law was stationed in Korea during the active Korean conflict. He purchased two beautiful pictures painted on silk with brilliant colors. One is a landscape with two Korean females with parasols looking at a lake and a mountain in the background and it is signed. The other is of Jesus at Gethsemane and is not signed. Both were professionally framed in 1955 and have been preserved in apparent excellent condition. Can you tell me if these were typical souvenirs commonly purchased by GI's in Korea by perhaps a street merchant or if something like this would have been purchased from a local artist? |

#5408 Email: marcus-stevo@att.net Subject: 30th infantry regiment retreat to west bank of maison rouge bridge, battle of colmar pocket Comments: I collect war letters. I aquire them thru ebay auctions. I have the WWII letters of Private Jon K. Smedberg, who was with the anti tank corp of the 30th infantry regiment, of the 3rd Army Division. In one letter after censorship was lifted, he writes about the winter of 44/45, saying "jesse owens couldnt have run any faster" than he did, as he ran down a road to escape German Tiger tanks which were cutting down soldiers with artillery fire. "the only time the 3rd army had to retreat," according to Pvt. Smedberg. Smedberg writes in the letter that he was amazed that he "made it to the river." Smedberg does not mention the battle or the bridge. But I think he's talking about the retreat of the 30th infantry regiment back to the west bank of the maison rouge bridge. Can somebody give me more backround info on that incident? MORE Importantly, at the east end of the bridge, there was a nearby village, and Smedberg says a "K company" was wiped out in the v! illage. He says there were reports that french residents pointed out hiding spots of the american soldiers to germans. A captain was so pissed off, that he ordered bombers to bomb the village. Smedberg says in the letter "nothing could have survived in that village after those bombers came thru." can anybody shed light on that incident? marcus-stevo@att.net |

Marshall (18 Aug 1899 - 12 Dec 1923) and have read that he volunteered with the 76th Field Artillery (American Third Division) during the Great War. He was from New Jersey and likely served under Col. Norman H. Schwarzkopf during the war. I say this because he later joined the New Jersey State Police which was founded by Schwarzkopf. Point in fact he was the first trooper in that organization to die in the line of duty. I read also, that he was awarded a silver star attachment for his WWI Victory medal which I believe is the equivalent to the Army Silver Star. I have requested his records from the National Archives but understand that many WWI records were destroyed in a fire. I am myself the former serviceman of the French army and I know the sense of duty to which I am very attached. I am interested in the history generally and quite particularly in the Second World war (WWII). I live in Metz, in the east of France where the fights were very rough for some of your units in 1944 and 1945. I heard about a soldier of the 3rd division of infantry which would have fought in Vosges, near BRUYERES in 1944. He was called HOY. Regrettably,it is the only information which I possess. Is it possible to know to which Unit belonged this soldier ? Maybe you have the other information concerning him. In advance, I thank you for your answer and for your work of memory. I have spoke to the webmaster there, and he told me that my father was only there for 2 weeks to be sent home. He came there from the divison that was the last army division formed in the ETO . He was called the "Fighting Padre of WWI". Father O'Reilly was in President Woodrow Wilson's office when World War One was declared in 1917, and he volunteered his services immediately. He served with distinction at the Front, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross. He was gassed twice. He was also awarded the Purple Heart and five battle stars. Many stories are told of his courageous deeds on the battle field, encouraging young soldiers during their last moments, all the while not considering his own fate. I have a few photos of "Padre", as he liked to be called, from World War I and from his later years. He was a man worth writing a book about and that is my intention. Any help with this project... any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance! Kind regards, Therese Lorenz |

REQUEST #5364 Name: Bas Bravenboer Email: basbravenboer@hotmail.com Subject: Need contact information oif two #ID vets in photo Hello 3rd Inf Div, from Holland Dear Rock of the Marne, I have a request but first a small story. From the age of 5 years old my grandparents and parents took me along to the Vosges mountains on holiday near Kaysersberg/Colmar. At early age I was very interested in the soldiers who fought in the war and everything around it. When we used to play on those mountain tops and went in old houses and huts we used to find military stuff like shell casings iv got a casing at home wich says Hughes brothers Seward, Nebraska January 1944, the whole shed is full of shell casings and I always wondered how they get there. Since my grand parents died 10 years ago we didn't go there that much so since I was 19 and able to travel alone I did. I visited all the places again and went to visit people my grandparents knew, this lady there shes now 83 had during the war a Panther tank standing in her garden covering the Road coming from the Col du Bonhomme. So I was always very intrested in this area and the guys who liberated it. Last holiday I visited the area again and the Memorial at Kintzheim were the Sherman tank is located, and what I never had expected happened suddenly there were these 3rd Infantry Division veterans visiting the same place I was very honoured to meet them right there. ![]() I am trying to find out more about 3rd Inf Division Marne specially some old photographs but its hard to find, and is there a way I can get in contact with these 2 men and the people that were there? Can u give me some tips perhaps? The picture of me with the veterans is included. Greetings from the Netherlands Bas Bravenboe |
