Antiaircraft artillery gun crewman stationed in the Aleutian Islands
during World War 11. He never talked about his experiences only to
say he had never been so cold. From his separation papers, I see he
was assigned to the 1563rd Engineer Depot Company. He also served as
a warehouser also in the Pacific Theater (I think). He received a
Good Conduct medal, an Asiatic Pacific Service Medal w/ 2 Bronze
Stars and a WW11 Victory Medal. That is all I know. He passed away
in 1980 and I would love to know more about his service to pass
along to his grandchildren. Thanks for your assistance. |

REQUEST #4612
From: Jack Summers
Email: jsummers@enseo.com
Subject: Army records
Comments: Gentlemen, I am 70 years of age and my hobby is writing. I
have no claim to fame other than an article I wrote about Audie
Murphy that was published in the Greenville Herald Banner -
Greenville, Texas on Memorial Day around 8 or 9 years ago. I was
recently writing some personal stuff about my living in Savannah, GA
during the early years of World War II and it made me want to
research something. I lived in Savannah with an older brother and
sister and our mother who was divorced from my dad. She dated a GI
stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah and he was well liked
by us kids. I never forgot that his first name was Jan (probably a
nickname) but it was years later when my brother, who was 10 or 11
back then, told me he was sure that Jan's last name was Mioli, or
Meole, or some Italian sounding name similar to that spelling.
My mother, who was a welder in the Savannah shipyards, died from
complications of chronic asthma in the early spring of 1943 and the
three of us kids moved to Washington, DC where my dad had found a
decent job running a commissary at the Anacostia Naval Air Base. My
brother told me recently that Jan was so distraught over her death
and that he'd loved our mother dearly.
My family and all the children love to read my accounts of those
past days and I am now trying to put something together for our next
family reunion. What I was wanting to research was any military
records from the war years that might include a Jan Miole (sp) who
was stationed at Hunter Field in Savannah back in 1942-43. I just
thought my family article would be a block buster for my brother and
sister if I could come up with something.
I Googled things like DD214 and Hunter Field but my search sort of
fizzled until I saw your names in an ad. Do you have ant suggestions
for me? Even if not, it would be interesting to hear from you.
Thanks,
Jack Summers |

Comments: I am interested in finding information about my
grandfather's service during WWII. He past away 2 years ago and
never would speak of his combat experience other than one time and
as much as I wanted to ask I respected his wishes. I recently found
his discharged papers and other documents, but I can't find any
other information doing web searches. Can anyone help me with the
information I need to find out more. What I have is 3rd ID, 394
Infantry, M Company. He served from early 1943 to mid 1946 and the
theaters listed were Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. I know
he was in a mortar battalion and other than
the funny/good times he had he never provided any other details. I
really want to preserve this history and pass it to my children. Any
help in my search would be appreciated. |

Subject: Private First Class Cleo T. Simon
Comments: Looking for as much info on my Grand Father Cleo T. Simon
HQ Company of the 377th 95th Infantry Division the only thing I know
about him is from two sources. a war dept letter sent to my Great
Grand Father and an Email I got from someone.... the war Dept letter
says "For Gallantry in action against the enemy, on Dec 3, 1944, in
the vicinity of *** Private First Class Simon was one of a four man
wire team sent out to repair a line from regimental command post to
the third
battalion command post. German artillery Fire was heavy. When the
team had restored the line as far as *** they took cover. Pointing
out the importance of the line under repair, the non-commissioned
officer in charge of the team asked for volunteers to accompany him
in completing the hazardous mission. All four men volunteered. Under
terrible shelling, private first class Simon and his comrades
crawled out of cover to resume their work. Despite the barrage, they
repaired several breaks in the line before a shell landed in their
midst, killing private first class Simon and wounding his three
comrades. Private First Class Simon's gallant devotion to duty
reflects lasting credit on him and is in keeping with the highest
traditions of the military service"
the email I got was the same story..
"Hi John:
Thank you for the email regarding your Grandfather Pvt. Simon. While
There is not much information about him that I can tell you, I can
pass this much on to you, based on my research...
On the morning of December 3rd, at around 10:00 am, your grandfather
and others from Headquarters Company were dispatched into an area
near Niederlimberg, which was near Wallerfangen, just on the banks
of the Saar River in Germany. Your Grandfather had been assigned to
the Defense Platoon of the 95th division Headquarters Company which
was far under strength, due to the battle of St. Barbara just having
been concluded, and troops being scattered and reorganized. My
father, who was part of Company H at the time, was, in fact, on it's
way to meet your Grandfather and HQ Company at the time your
Grandfather was killed. From the opposite side of the Saar is where
the artillery from the Germans was heavy, and this is where, when
the lines of communication broke, your Grandfather and the other
soldiers were attempting to fix them when they were hit by the fire
and were killed. Your Grandfather by all accounts did in fact repair
the line before he
was killed, which did lead to the communications being restored,
helping H Company, my dad's Company, roll through and across towards
Saar, turning the tide towards Berlin and the eventual fall.
I asked my dad if he knew of or about your Grandfather and, since so
little men lost their lives in this battle, he remembered the
incident of his death, but not all of the details. My dad is 82
years old and is thankfully doing well, one of the last of the
surviving men left of the 95th Infantry. He was one of only 6 kids
out of only 6,600 plus men who was 17 years of age or younger when
he entered the war in 1943..he was born in 1925. The rest of them
were in their 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's and are all gone now.
This is also what I can tell you about your Grandfather.
He, as I mentioned, served in HQ-Headquarters Company. He was
awarded the Silver Star for bravery, after his death, the European
Theatre Ribbon twice for both France and Germany, and HQ Awards for
Bravery. "if anyone has info on this story or anything about my
Grand Father I would love to hear from you |

Comments: I am looking for any information on Verner Derrill Cape,
my grandfather. He was in the 30th infantry company,3rd infantry
division. He died 10 October 1944 somewhere in Europe. This is on
his headstone and is the only information I have. I was always told
he went AWOL during basic training because he was homesick. He came
come, got my grandmother pregnant and returned willingly back to
camp. He never saw my father, but knew he had a one year old son
when he was killed. He was from Walhalla,SC. If you knew him or
anything about his unit, or can guide me to any information about
him or his unit, It would be greatly appreciated as I am new to
this.
Thank you for your help,
Derrill Cape |

Subject: John H. Riley 32 213 745
Comments: My father (John H Riley of Hoosick Falls NY) (SN 32213745)
never spoke of his time serving during the war. He passed away in
Nov 2006. The only official records remaining (because of the fire
at the National Archives in 1973) are his discharge papers which
indicate that he was part of the 62nd Armored Inf Battalion.
Cleaning out some of his file cabinets we found a campagine map from
the 80th Division that apparently some part of his Battalion (I am
assuming this because I can not find any records of the 62nd
Battalion being attached to the 80th Division) was attached in Jan
1945. On the map he had written comments on
areas where he had been. He crossed from Mainz to Wiesbaden with the
note on his map of "Easy Crossing Don't Know Why?", April 1-3,
involved in the battle of Kassel ("Kind of a tough place to take"),
Erfurt on the 12th, and Weimar, Jena, and Gera on the 14th,
relieved, 21 April, it moved to Nürnberg ("Guarded a cheese and
butter factory. Good day!
.") for occupation duty and on 28 April, to Regensburg. Looking thru
the papers I received from the National Archives I found the
following information.
1) the Honorable Discharge Certificate states that my father was in
the 62nd Armored Infantry Battalion
2) The Enlisted Record and Report of Separation states in block 10
Heavy Mortar Crewman 607, block 11 "Combat Inf Badge GO #9 HQ 318
INF 7 FEb
45", block 12 lists "Ardennes, Central Europe, Rhineland, Sicily,
Southern France", Block 13 lists "European-African-Middle Eastern
Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart GO #139, HQ 80th Inf
Div 28 May 45", and block 16 shows arrival in MTO 11 May 43, ETO 19
Sep 44.
According to the 14th Armorded my father was not in thier roster and
may have been assigned to the 62nd in order to return to the states.
I believe he was assigned to the 80th after recovering from wounds
suffered at the Battle of the Bulge.
Does he exist in any rosters in the 3rd Division??? |

Subject: William J. Casey - Korean War
Comments: Hi, I am looking for any information at all on my
grandfather, William (Bill) John Casey, from Watertown,
Massachusetts. He served in the Korean War during `952 (not sure
exactly how long). He died recently, just this last October, and
because he would never speak about the war while he was alive, we
really don't know anything about it. Most importantly, we found a
document saying that he was awarded a medal after the war, but he
never told a soul about it, and the medal is nowhere here. I found
some pictures and papers from Japan and Korea that he had saved, and
was able to piece some things together. I know that he fought on a
hill (it says "334") for 41 days during April and May 1952...but I
googled it and could not find any info on the battle. I know he went
to camp in Texas and New Orleans before being shipped out in late
1951; he was about 23 years old. I would love to know anything about
his time there, that fight on the hill, or what he got the medal
for...if anyone recognizes the name or happens to know, please let
me know! It would mean so much to my grandmother. |
