Subject: Helping veterans help veteran
Sirs,
As a combat veteran of an earlier war...as a citizen concerned about
the social consequences of mounting number of veterans returning
from the Middle East with unresolved emotional issues...and as a
scientist and educator with professional interests in helping people
deal with the emotional fallout from traumatic life events, I have
put together a proposal for an effort to help these veterans
readjust to a culture without violence. This effort requires the
volunteer input from veterans with experience as trainers in the
military. I have outlined the proposal in the following short web
presentation:
www.members.aol.com/esurviv .
This is an ambitious proposal, but the need is substantial and the
consequences of doing nothing are potentially devastating. So, I am
soliciting your input in any way that you feel might be useful.
Thanks.

I'm trying to locate the first American units to pass through the

Dragoon. The reason for my request is a friend and her family,
including her American step mother were in the town (her father was
the mayor) at the time. Her step mother had made an American flag
from scraps of sheet she'd hand sewn and flew the flag when they
heard the first truck coming. The truck stopped, the troops joining
them in their home, and the troops gave them coffee. Now elderly, my
friend shared this story, showed us the flag and wondered who those
wonderful troops were so many years ago. Can you help? Jenny Strock

was buried at Anzio also. Dad was in North Africa; Anzio Beachhead;
and the Sicilian Campaign. I know he had a purple heart. One of
his brothers thinks he had 3 silver stars, but the other thinks they
were battle stars for the 3 major offensives. Dad wanted to forget
the war, so buried all his war memories years before I remember
seeing them. |

Information on PVT Paul Lepisto, 30th Inf, 3ID, WWII
My uncle Paul Lepisto was assigned to the 30th Inf, 3ID in WWII. He
is buried at Couville sur Mer in Normandy France, next to his cousin
Tauno Lepisto (26 Inf, 1ID). Family history says that he was killed
in the line of duty in the Italian Campaign on 12 Sep 1944 - but it
doesn't make sense to me that he would be buried in France, if he
was killed in Italy. I am interested in finding out some more about
the time he spent in the service during WWII. Does the 3ID have any
records about my Uncle Paul? Are any other vets that he may have
served with alive who may be able to share some personal anecdotes?
Vr,
Mary Ashley
Here's some information that my Mom sent:
"Here's some information I gathered from news clippings for my
brother Paul. His full name was Paul Arthur Lepisto. He was born on
Nov. 11, 1918 in Wakefield, MI. He entered the Army in early 1940.
He had joined the Michigan National Guard and it was ordered into
Federal Service at Ypsilanti, MI. His preliminary training was in
Louisiana and he was transferred to the Pacific Coast in California
for Defense Patrol after the opening of the War with Japan. In March
of 1944 he went to the European Theater of war and saw action in
Italy. He was killed in the line of duty in the Italian campaign on
Sept. 12, 1944. On his headstone it says Paul A. Lepisto, PVT. 30
INF 3 DIV." |

4th of July Parades
Hey fellow historians,
I was wondering if you could put me in contact with WWII re-enactors
in my area of NW Georgia or to see if maybe even yourselves might be
interested. I was very disappointed in the July 4th parade here in
Cartersville this year. It needs more celebration of our nation's
freedom - examples of its freedom and those who have helped preserve
it.
I am kicking around ideas for next year to hand to the mayor and one
major one would be re-enactors from several different eras of our
history marching in the parade. I saw your unit was in possession of
military vehicles also.
AND if you have contacts with regard to WWI, Rev War, and even more
modern groups with Vietnam or Gulf War/Iraqi vets ?
