Subject: Request for information - Robert Smawley

Comments: My great uncle, Robert Smawley, served in the 5th Army during the Italian Campaign in World War II. I know that he was also in Sicily in Patton’s 7th Army and in North Africa before that. We know little more as he passed away before these things became of interest to the family. Unfortunately, we have been informed that his service records perished in a fire in Missouri.
The 3rd Division is one of the few divisions he may have served in given the few Orders of Battle I have seen. Is there a roster available or the members of the various units within the Division that we could access to learn more information?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Webmaster's Note: I couldn't find Robert Smawley's name in the book "History of the 3rd Infantry Division, in WW2" in the roster section. He may have been assigned to another Division in the 5th Army.

Subject: looking for relative in China with 15th regiment during 1924-26

Comments: Hello-
We are trying to identify a relative who served in the 15th Regiment in China during 1924-26, possibly longer. We have pictures showing him at the Summer Palace, at Shanhaiguan Pass in Qunhuangdao City in 1924, in Nau-Ta-Gau (?) in July 1926. He was also in Peking area. My husbands grandfather told him this relative (a cousin of Grandpa's) was a quartermaster under Pershing in Mexico before he was in China. He was Jewish and from the NY area, probably NYC area.
If anyone has any info, ideas please email me.
Thank you!

Subject: Information about Raymond Boyd Pitkin

Comments: I am currently putting together information about a family member, Raymond Boyd Pitkin. I have contacted NPRC for his service records. He joined the U.S. Army during April of 1939 in a 'Modern Minuteman' program. He was stationed in Hawaii prior to World War II. It is my understanding he served with the 3rd Infantry Division during at least seven Campaigns (Europe-African-Middle Eastern). He had the seal of the U. S. Army tattooed to his right arm. He had a brother, Charles, who served in the U. S. Navy (Pacific, KIA)

I would like to contact someone who might have known or served with him.
Thank You

Subject: Teen Remembering Veteran's Stories

Hello. My name is Kyle Nappi. I am 18 years old and I live in Ostrander, Ohio ( USA ). I was wondering if you could do me a favor.

I have a big interest in history, specifically WWII. I collect military medals, patches, badges, insignia, field gear, and a very unique thing, veteran autographs. I have a collection of autographs from military veterans who served during WWI, WWII, Korea , Vietnam , Gulf War, and the present war in Iraq .

I have been interested in history for over 6 years now, and I have collected the autographs and stories from nearly 1,600 veterans in 20 countries. The oldest veteran is currently 112 years old and the youngest enlisted at age 14. I have autographs from Pearl Harbor survivors, D-Day veterans, airman, POWs, USS Indianapolis survivors, Holocaust survivors, and even German soldiers!

Back in June (of 2007), I was interviewed by PBS, to talk about my collection for an interview that was to be shown online (YouTube). After that, I was interviewed for "The Columbus World War II Roadshow." They mentioned that it was to come on (in Central-Ohio) before some of the episodes of Ken Burns’ "The War." You can find this interview on YouTube under "Kyle Nappi."

I was recently interviewed by the American Legion for an article that will appear in their August magazine. Here is an internet link to the online article (different than the magazine article, which will appear in August)
http://www.legion.org/whatsnew/publications/newsletter/story?id=635

There have been several other people have taken the time to post my request online and in newspapers. There are too many for me to list, but if you go to Google or Yahoo and search "Kyle Nappi" you can find most of them.

Recently, I also had the privilege of going to Washington, D.C. during the early part of March. I was invited to the Pentagon for a Ceremony honoring WWI veterans. I was able to meet with the last American WWI veteran, Frank Buckles.

My main purpose for writing it to share with you that there are people from my generation who do remember the past and the sacrifices that were made for our great country. I would greatly appreciate it if you could pass the word around that there are people who remember, along with the information about my collection. If any veterans would like to help with my collection, feel free to contact me. Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,
Kyle Nappi

Comments: Hi, I need some assistance/advise. My father, Cecil Underwood, Jr, passed away on 5 Jun 2008. We are trying to find a display case for his flag and want to place a small plaque on it. I want to insure that we list his military information correctly. This is the info from his discharge paper and how I "think" it should appear on the plaque.

S/SGT Cecil Underwood, Jr.
Rifleman,
Co I, 7th Inf Regt

Are the abbreviation correct as stated. Can this appear in a single line (Co I, 7th Inf Regt, 3rd Inf Div, US Army)? Also do you have any suggestions as to where we can find a nice wooden display case?
Thanks, Sue (Underwood) Mergler

Hi There!
I know I am taking a stab in the dark. . . . but I came across this awesome picture that was in my grandmothers possession (she has passed on) and I do not know where it came from, or whose it was. It is the perfect picture of this man, kneeling down with his uniform on, with the inscription on the back "Anzio Beachhead" 1945, to a good pal, Don Bell. I am a history buff, and do a bit of genealogy as a hobby, but no one in my family, that I am aware of, was there. The picture is in perfect condition, so to me it doesn't seem like it would have been carried around in a helmet or such. This picture is 3 x 5 and is definitely worth framing, but more importantly, I would like to find out about this man, whose picture is very inspirational. I know nothing of him, except the name on the back. Can you point me in the right direction in trying to find out something about him?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Kristina Kurtz
Hi There: Just wanted to update you, as I gave you the inscription on memory. It actually says:
"Anzio Beachhead Italy 1944" To a darn good steadfast pal. Yours ever. Don Bell.
Thanks again!

Subject: ww1 soldier with little information

Comments: I am looking for information about my great grandfather who served in ww1. He lived in Wisconsin after ww1. He is buried in Wood Natl Cemetery (Wi). His death date is March 16, 1935. His birthdate is Unknown. He is believed to have born in 1891. He was a cpl in the army and was part of company 12, Motor Mechanic. His name is Ab Johnson. I have also seen his name as Albert Johnson. He may have had a different last name when he was younger. Something like Nichols or Michols..?? He was married to Elizabeth "Anna" Coy Johnson. I would like to locate his real name and birthdate plus information about who his parents were. I've been told he was Caucasian but may also have had Indian and/or Negro heritage, as well.
