Subject: Requesting Help, ref. Battle of Nuremberg, April 1945
Comments: Hello 15th IR Association,
Our company is tasked with taking up to 12 bus loads of soldiers
from the 2d Stryker Brigade to Nuremberg. Unfortunately, this
mission was given to us by USARUER on short notice. The trips are to
take place on the 4th through 8th of October (several buses each
day). We have to get several instructors prepared for this, and
visiting the three Medal of Honor sites would be highlights of the
trip.
I just spent several hours in the National Archives trying to find
the Medal of Honor packets for PFC Joseph Merrill, 1LT Frank Burke,
and 1LT Michael Daly. The MOH recommendation packets have a great
deal of information, such as a sketch of the site where the actions
took place. I could not find them at the archives, nor could the
people on duty at the Archives on Friday or today help me. Could you
assist us with that? Might you have a copy of the packets?
Kind Regards,
Sam Doss

Subject: Searching for my grandfather
Comments: Hello All! I am searching for any information on my
Grandfather's service during WWII. I know he was in Africa and that
is about it (I don't think he made it to Italy or France but am not
sure). Unfortunately he passed in 1989 and I was too young to know
and understand the importance. I have his report of separation and
it lists the 1590th SCU prisoner of war camp which is in Camp Perry
Ohio where he was discharged. However it does not list any
information regarding where he was located in Africa. I work for the
National World War II Museum and would really like additional
information but we have not been able to track down anything.
His name was Paul S. Sayre and he entered into service in Huntington
WV. His serial number was 35 429 860 and the rank was Staff
Sergeant.
Any information you may have would be greatly appreciate (even if it
is to say he was not in the 3rd ID it would help eliminate that area
of research.) Thanking you in advance! |

Subject: photos of soldiers
Comments: Hi, I have been desperately seeking army photo's of my
dad, Steve Starynchak. He was drafted from Cleveland, Ohio. He
signed up at the YMCA on Franklin Blvd. My dad also went by the name
of Chip. I believe he was in the European-African Campaign. I did
not know that my dad received numerous medals while serving in WWII
until the day of his funeral. Some man stood up and gave details of
my dad's heroics. Sadly, I was far too broken that day to listen to
anyone. I have found a photo of him with two other soldiers, I
believe and would like to scan it and send it to a site where
someone may identify a loved one. Can you help me with that? Also,
if there is any way at all I can find out where to locate a
newspaper article detailing him getting injured while in Italy? It
was a local Cleveland paper, but I cannot find it. I am sorry to ask
so many questions. I am pretty flustered and confused. My dad taught
all of us to be Patriots, be proud of our country, and now with the
things going on in the world as they are, it has made me miss him so
very much. Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated. Bless you all.

Hello,
My name is Ron Wismer and my Grandfather Lt. George E Brown recently
died. He served with the 3rd Infantry Division 15th Infantry
Regiment in Korea (or as close as I can tell from pictures that's
who he served with). I am trying to get more information about his
service, since unfortunately you always look back the hardest after
the person is gone. I would love to find people who served with my
grandfather. He is being buried in Arlington in December and would
love to have personal stories about his time in the service for
then. Any information you could find would be a godsend.
Thank you

Subject: Stephen Ludlam
Comments: Hi- I publish a small newspaper in Avalon and Stone
Harbor, NJ – The Seven Mile Times. I realize that my request is
probably impossible – but here goes: The American Legion hall in
Stone Harbor, NJ is named after a local soldier killed in action in
World War II. Stone Harbor has developed from a small, sparsely
inhabited barrier island into a very wealthy vacation destination. I
grew concerned that no one, including some of the members of the
Legion, knew anything about the person that the Legion was named
after – Stephen Ludlam. So two years ago I set out to make sure that
people remembered who Steve was and the sacrifice that he made. I’m
continuing that mission.
I’ve attached a copy of Steve’s story – it’s incredibly moving. (Click
Here for pdf.) I’ve done quite a bit of research – there’s
only one piece missing – I’d love to find someone who served with
Steve (he was a member of the 3rd Infantry) – especially someone who
may have been there when he lost his life. Time obviously is of the
essence. Is there anyone who can help me in my search? |

Subject: Searching for unknown father and little brother
Hello,
I am helping a close friend try to locate his father and little
brother who he has never met. My friend was born approx.1952/53 in
Korea. His father was an Italian-American soldier and his mom was a
Korean woman. He has no information except that he has a little
brother who is a few years younger than him who was also born to the
soldier and his Korean mom. At some point when they were between age
of 5-10 the father returned to take his little brother from Korea
back to America.
My friend was left in Korea with his mother and he was eventually
adopted by an American family at the age of 10. All he has is 1
photo with his mother and he and his little brother and he is
holding a picture frame with a photo of his father in it- which we
cannot see because its so small! My friend is also quite tall, so
his father must be also. I wonder if his father and/or brother have
sought to find him too? If you have heard of a story anything like
this, or may come across any leads. PLEASE email me. My friend is in
his 50s now, and this would mean the world to him. |

Subject: Journal of a WWII soldier
Comments: I am hoping to make the restitution of the diary of a
soldier who was in the Battery C, 10th Field Artillery of the 3rd
Division during WWII. His journal was found by my family who lives
in a small village called Mérindol, in the south of France. They
think that the journal was left behind on August 18th or 19th, 1944.
I don't have the name of the soldier, but his journal gives his date
of birth, the date of birth of his father, and the day he joined the
army. It also contains friends' names and several addresses, some of
which could be contact information for family members. The soldier
seems to come from the Wisconsin/Illinois area.
I absolutely know nothing about military history.
Could somebody give me pointers on what I can do with this
information in order to find the soldier or his family? |

Dear Gentlemen:
For the past several years an effort has been made for a Medal of
Honor to Lt. Garlin M. Conner (Deceased) WWII veteran of the 3rd
Division.
One of the eyewitness reports we have is by a Robert A. Dutil. Would
the Bob Dutil in the photo be Robert A. Dutil?
If so, would like to get in contact with him since the hearing in
Lt. Conner's case before the Army Board for Correction of Military
Records will be within the next 60 days. The Battalion Commander of
the 3rd Battalion, 7th Regiment, 3rd Division during the battles in
the Colmar Pocket at the time was Lt. Col. Lloyd B. Ramsey, now
Major General Lloyd B. Ramsey, Ret. who has requested to appear and
present evidence of his error in not submitting the recommendation
at the time because he was wounded the next day. Lt. Conner's action
was on 24 Jan 1945 where he stopped 6 tiger tanks and 600 German
Infantry soldiers from decimating his unit. Two days later on 26 Jan
1945 Lt. Audie L. Murphy did about the same in a battle two miles
from Lt. Conner's feat.
If the Bob Dutil is in fact the same Robert A. Dutil then anyone
information about where he could be contacted would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Walton R. Haddix |
