Comments: Do you have any information re my father, Walter Ray
Schenck, also known as RED. 3rd Battalion, 15th Regiment front line
medic, aid man/litter bearer - served Feb. 1941- all through WWII.
He earned a Bronze Medal on Dec. 26, 1944.
He passed away May 14, 2008, age 92. He was a humble hero. At one
time, Jackie Martin was a photographer traveling with the front line
medics. She was going to write a book entitled, "Oh, Medic", but we
doubt it ever got written. I am curious to know if my father's
pictures ever ended up in a book. A German plane engine fell into my
dad's foxhole and killed the major who had taken over the
foxhole...an account mentioned in Rick Atkinson's book "The Day of
Battle". I recently discovered 43 of my dad's letters to home, and
have copied and bound in books for our family. I have 4 sons who
want to preserve the trail of my dad thru the European Campaign, and
we video taped him in a 3.5 hr. interview in 2004. If you happen to
have any information we would appreciate it. We have searched on the
other sites to no avail. Thank you! |

Kitzingen was USAREU baseball champs in that era. Or any

Subject: Harvey/Larson barracks
I was stationed at Leighton from 94-99. I also trained down at the
Kitzingen Training Area. I now live as a civilian in Wuerzburg. A
few weeks ago I went on a "recon mission" of the old bases in
Kitzingen near the back gate on the other side of the train
tracks/road I found some very old buildings. These were gutted and
parts of them were half buried. I found a 3rd ID patch painted on
one and lots of standard grunt graffiti "scouts out" and "nuke Iran"
for example. Might you know the story of those buildings?
Harvey Barracks, 97318 Kitzingen

The area just North of the large white roofed warehouse. An obstacle
course is located East of the warehouse. Probably the warehouse and
course are new relative your time there as a service member.
However, one can make out the partially cleared area just North of
the warehouse on the map that I refer to. There is also a cement
wall running along a berg that separates the warehouse and gutted
buildings. I suspect it may have been a motor pool.
Regards,
David |

Subject: World War II - 3rd Infantry Division Information Request
My name is Erik Novak and I am contacting you today to see if you
could direct me to a roster of soldiers for the US 3rd Infantry
Division during World War II. My deceased Grandfather, Michael J.
Novak, had served in the European Theater during World War II, but
the information my father was able to provide me was rather sketchy.
He informed me that my Grandfather had stories about his time in
Italy, France, and was apparently present during the taking of
Berchtesgaden. From the research I've done, it appears that the US
3rd Infantry Division is the only US force that would fit all three
criteria.
My Grandfather was from Olyphant Pennsylvania and I believe was a
Mess Sergeant. If you could direct me to a database containing the
names for the US 3rd Infantry during World War II, or could direct
me to someone who might be able to, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you.

Comments: I am trying to find someone who knew Louie Pearl Hefner
who was from Missouri and stationed in Ft Riley in 1936. I have
copies of envelopes where his foster mother sent letters to him at
the Military Prison at Fort McArthur California. It was returned to
the Guard House at Ft Riley Kansas. I have written Ft Riley and they
wrote back and said it would take too long to try and find anything.
It seems like every where we turn we hit a brick wall. My husband's
family has been trying to find him as he married my husband's mother
and then left her when my husband was six years old, never to be
seen again. Since I have been working on the genealogy of my
husband's family I have been trying to find anyone who might have
known him or how I could find out anything. I wrote to SS and they
said that his number was retired in 1955. I wrote a letter to them
to pass on to anyone who might have been involved with him but they
sent me a letter back saying they couldn't find anyone. He had four
children the last one he never saw as he just up and left.
Thanks for listening to me and if you would know anyone or any
organization that I could write to find out what happened to him
while in service to send him to the prison and guard house.
Thanks-Joyce Hefner |
