Subject: Pvt. Leonard V. Williams 3rd Inf. Div. WW-II
Comments: I am trying to get any information on my father Leonard V
Williams Pvt. Co. A 30th Inf. Reg.3rd Inf. Div. I have copies of his
service record and know that he received 3 Purple Hearts.
His papers said he was in the Naples-Tunisia, Rome-Arno, Rhineland
and Southern France T.O.. I have also located pics of him and some
buddies and in the pics (which I will send copies) he was
wearing Corporal stripes. He said very little to us about the war.
He did tell us bits and pieces
like he remembered seeing Audie Murphy one time drinking a cup of
coffee and he was busted for
creating a disturbance in a medical tent while seeing a Dentist. I
also have some of his service
ribbons that I can't find pics of. One has 2 green borders and a
solid orange center and another
is blue with 2 thin yellow stripes on the border and 2 thicker
yellow stripes near the center. I
also found 2 small stars in his ribbon medal box and wanted to know
if these are campaign stars
and would they be displayed on his E.A.M.E ribbon. My dad passed
away in Nov. 1994. Any information you can provide or where I might
be able to find it would be appreciated,
Thank You. |

Comments: Following from War Department 20 December l944 Decoration
citation.
SILVER STAR
"For gallantry in action. On 15 October 1943,
Private First Class O'Donnell voluntarily seized his "Bazooka Gun"
and moved forward in a single handed effort to drive off a group of
Mark IV tanks which had disorganized his battalion with extremely
heavy fire. He advanced through this demoralizing fire to a point
200 yards in advance of the most forward elements of his battalion
and attacked the tanks, disabling one and forcing the remainder to
retire. Private First Class O'Donnell was killed in this action."
Only other name I have is Plt Sgt Collins.
Any/All Info will indeed be deeply appreciated.

John E. O'Donnell, Co G, 30th Infantry, was the recipient of the
Silver Star (Posthumously) for action in Italy on October 15, 1943
as listed in the book "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WW2"
on page 402. |

Subject: Bronze stars awarded to my dad, Fred Thames, European
theatre WWII, Ist Army, Red Ball Express
Comments: My father, now 88 yrs old, served in the First Army in
Europe, driving trucks in the Redball Express operation supplying
General Patton's tanks with fuel. He describes vividly and in great
detail driving under strafing by the Luftwaffe, at night, off-road,
through forests and woods, across streams, and through mud. He
remembers the towns and villages he drove through. He has stated
several times that he was awarded 5 bronze stars, a silver star and
the Purple Heart. I am trying to trace these records and confirm
them. He moved several times in the last twenty years, and has lost
track of these medals. I understand some records were lost from the
St. Louis facility due to a fire some years ago. Can you please help
me? |

Subject: Ernest Ray Slater, WWII soldier
Comments: I am trying to learn more about my Grandfathers time in
the Army. I received after his death a few military insignias but
not enough to identify what aspect of the 3rd ID he was in. I have a
medal of good conduct, a purple heart, and a pow medal. I know he
was a POW. I did hear that the military lost a lot of records in the
1970's due to a fire. I know that my grandfather was entitled to
other medals but I don't which. I remember my grandfather telling me
that the state department attempted to give him medals and he ran
them off his property. He was a bitter old man most of my life and
never talked about WWII. But curiosity is peaked and if you can
provide any information about Ernest Ray Slater and his military
career or a path for me to locate information, I would greatly
appreciate it.
Thank you, Steven Edward Slater
Webmaster's Note: Ernest R. Slater is listed in the book "History of
the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" on page 529 as a PVT in the 30th
Infantry Regiment and is listed as "Missing in Action". |

Subject: Charles John Kuhlmann info
Comments: My dad passed away last month at 86. This lead to a
complete review of all the house, picts, records etc. It also
brought back memories of how I was named John Charles Mitchell. My
folks named me John Charles as a tribute to Charles John Kuhlmann (a
Johns Hopkins ROTC college buddy). The order of the names was
reversed in respect to Charles J Kuhlmann's parents. I have a
letter of appreciation from his mom to my mom about my naming. It
was my honor to visit Charles Kuhlmann's grave site in Epinal with
my folks in 2000.
Almost all of the Hopkins ROTC crowd have passed away now. One of
the few left actually dated Charles just before he went overseas.
She has forwarded a number of letters that he sent her from the
front.
I would greatly appreciate any information or sources of info on the
history, battle record, etc. of Charles service leading up to his
death in action on Oct 30, 1944. Where did he fight and where did he
fall. I remember my Dad commenting on how he had been luck that he
had ducked just before the round came at him so he was wounded in
the lower back. He said that Charlie had not been that lucky.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
