Sunday, October 29, 2000  REQUEST #345
Name: Judy Craven
email: jacraven@bellsouth.net
Subject: Lewis Clyde Crownover, WW II in Italy

My uncle, Lewis Clyde Crownover, who recently died in September 2000 of cancer, served in Italy during 1943 - 1945. The only recollection of his I ever knew of, and it was through another person, was as follows:

His infantry division was following tanks on a road in Italy. The Germans destroyed all the tanks and killed everyone except my uncle (who was wounded), another soldier, and a third soldier who had his leg blown off during the attack. The Germans searched over the site of the battle to make sure everyone was dead. My uncle and the others laid very still, one of them was even nudged by the Germans, but he remained still. Finally the Germans left the area, and after what probably seemed like forever, the soldier with only one leg began to call out for help, asking if anyone was still alive. My uncle and the other soldier, carried the soldier with one leg back to another division, as theirs had been wiped out.

That is all I know but I would like to know more as I, too, am a veteran (of a much later war). The main reason I would like more information is that his surviving sisters (my mother and aunt) would also like to know more about where he served, etc. They were quite a bit younger than he was, as they were only small children during the war. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Request: Mr. Edwin (Eddie) Merry (LCMs and gunner) & Mr. Lawerance (Lol) Randall (Defencesivly Equipped Merchant Shipping radio operator )
We are trying to research our late father and father - in- laws Royal Nay WW2 service records. Mr. Eddie Merry saw active duty on the Sicily landings and possibly the Italian landings, He was an LCM personnel and at some point his craft or ship was attacked and damaged because he spent a long time in hospital in Naples. We are having problems tracing both records because the subject was avoided by our respective fathers while they were alive and we have no idea what the names of the ships they were on are. If anyone has any information or think they can help could they e-mail peter.randall1@ntlworld.com
Many Thanks

Comments: My brother Robert G. Willenbaker was killed in action during WW2 in Italy 3-4 June 1944. He was with company C 30th Inf. 3D. He was initially buried at Nettuno and we had his remains shipped back to the states. The nearest I can determine from the info I have been able to gather is that he was killed between Anzio and either the drive to Rome or when Gen. Clark diverted the 3D units toward Valmontone, Italy. Would like any information from anyone who was with Company C 30th inf in that area. I am a vet of WW2 with service in Africa, England, France and Germany. Detached from 7th Army attached 2D French Corps. regards Bill

KURT THOMPSON

email: kthompso@twcny.rr.com

Request: I am the son of a U.S. Army World War II Veteran who wore the 3rd Division patch and was a corporal and tank driver named Henry H. Thompson.

Unfortunately, all of my father's military books, papers and paraphernalia were lost or destroyed at the time of his tragic death in 1984. I'm trying to find all the info I can about him and all those whom he served with to defend our country, so that I can at least try to put back together some of his military history as a matter of family honor and dedication.
All I know is remembering having seen an old book with the 3rd Infantry Division patch on the front and and other patch of either a tiger or panther with a tank in it's jaws.

My father was a corporal who drove a tank. That's all I can remember. I can't even be sure of the years he served, specifically, but my bst guess woould be between 1943 and 1945.
I remember him saying he fought in Italy, France, Germany, etc. I would greatly appreciate anyone with any info regarding my father's role in that great campaign or even anyone who even knew him.
Once again, his name was Cpl. Henry (Hank) Harold Thompson. he was recruite out of the state of New York.
