Subject: 4th Infantry Regiment - Joseph Shepler
Comments: Hello! First, you have a great site with
lots of information. I am trying to find information
of my Great Grandfather Joseph Shepler. He died in
1925 so nobody knows anything about him. I found one
picture of him and it appears he has a "4" on his US
collar disc and a "C" under his infantry disc. I am
assuming this means 3rd Div, 4th Infantry Regiment,
Company C. Do you have any rosters or books that
might have his name to verify this? He is from
Chicago and enlisted Aug. 27 1918 and was discharged
July 28 1919. I was told he was gassed and that's
how he passed so early. I am thinking he may have
been a replacement since he enlisted so late. His
asn is 4247805. If you need anymore information
please let me know. I hope you will be able to help
me out. Thank you very much.

family tree and has discovered a cousin on his
maternal side of the family. SSgt William S Moreton
served with the 15 Inf Regt during WW2,
unfortunately he was KIA'd near to Monticello in
Italy in Oct 43. I have no further details as which
platoon or company he actually served with. Would
anybody have any recollections of operations in that
area in Oct 43, it is Southwest of Salerno, like I
say I have very little information, but we are both
very interested in finding out as much as we can.
My father is Peter Fish, Blackpool, England and his

Comments: I'd like to hear from anyone that served
or knew of my Grandfather, Paul K. Strayer. He was
wounded near the Volturno river. He was with five or
six other men in a wood line observing
German/Italian troops and vehicles on a roadway when
they took artillery fire. The men to both sides of
my grandfather were KIA and he was wounded in his
legs.
I'd very much like to hear from anyone with any
information they'd have about my grandfather or
knowledge of that incident. He has recently passed
away like so many others from that time. Thanks to
anyone that may be able to help.

Is this for all 3rd Division? My father was in the

medal, if given to all, for him to place with his
others. He has been deceased since 1994, but I have
kept all his WWII 3rd Division medals and things.

Subject: Can you help me find Lt. Lockett?
Comments: I work at a small VA medical clinic in
Burns, OR. One of our vets brought me the name and
email address of 1st Lt. Andrew J. Lockett and asked
that I send him an email as this vet is an older
gentleman and doesn't have or know how to use the
internet. Apparently, Lt. Lockett had posted
somewhere on the web that he was trying to glean
information about IE Shima and the soldiers posted
there during the war. I have sent my vet's letter
twice, in email format, only to have it bounce back
at me. I got your email address off of a page that
popped up when I did a search on Lt. Lockett.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Dear Lt. Lockett,
I am a clerk that works at a small VA clinic here in
Oregon. I am writing on behalf of one of the vets
who comes into our clinic. His name is Norman McAtee
and he is a very sweet, soft spoken man. He does not
have the internet or a computer at home, but a
someone found a note from you on the internet
stating that people who had been stationed on Ie
Shima could contact you. The following is a note
from Norm that he brought to the clinic after I told
him I would type and send it for him. The email he
has included at the end (as a way to reach him) is
the email address of a friend of his who said he
would receive it for him. Or, if you'd like to write
him a "snail mail" letter, you can send it to him,
in care of me (Marsha Wilson) and mail it to the
clinic and I'll make sure he gets it.

Thanks for your time,

"To 1st Lt. Andrew J. Lockett:
You have never heard of me, but I was stationed on
Ie in 1945. I don't remember the exact day we landed
there, but it was a few days after Ernie Pyle was
killed. We stayed there until after the end of the
war.
I was with the 337th air service not with the 417th
fighter group. Some way I must not remember the
directions of the runways correctly, as I remember
them from from N.W. to S.E. The beach where the
tower and hospital were (before the kamikaze flying
band made a direct hit on the hospital) was looking
directly across the shortest distance to Okinawa.
Our shop was right under the end of the runway that
the P47s tood off from the time they loaded a 1000
lb bomb on each wing, instead of 500 pounders. They
also had a large gas tank underneath and when they
came off the runway, they dipped down, just clearing
the shop and then flew around two miles just above
the water. I think it was in Manchuria, that they
had tried to knock out a big dam with 500 pounders
and they just bounced off, but they took it our that
time.
I realize it has been 65 years and I am 85 years
old, but I have tried to find someone, for a long
time, that ever knew there was an Ie Shima.
I was at my Dr.'s at the VA Clinic in Burns, Oregon.
He asked where I was when the war ended & I told him
I was with the 413th fighter group, so he got on the
computer, and got me more information than I thought
was possible and made me very happy.
I hope you will see fit to answer & if you do, you
can reach me (Norman F. McAtee) at

Subject: Vosges veterans available who were members
of the 3rd Infantry Division's logistics units
Comments: Dear Sir,
I'm currently writing an article relating to
front-line logistics, the paper is entitled, 'Is
Improvisation Improvement in War?' I'm an American
student currently doing a year-abroad at the
University of Edinburgh. My grandfather, Joseph
Strauss Lerner, was a quartermaster in the 3rd
Infantry Division from 1940-1946. Sadly, he died.
His death sparked my interest in the challenges and
constraints logistics poses when supplies are
running out.
My thesis relates to Hotelling's Law and other
examples of resource management for the public
sector.
I'm wondering if there are any Vosges veterans
available who were members of the 3rd Infantry
Division's logistics units and could do a short
phone interview (or an e-mail is fine, but a phone
interview would be better).
Thank you for your help,
Sincerely,
George Lerner

Comments: Hello, I am not sure you can help me but I
am hoping for a small miracle. When the 3rd Infantry
moved from Germany to Ft. Stewart my best friend SSG
Leon Carroll moved with it. We were both stationed
at Bamberg together for several years before the the
3ID reflagged in Georgia. I was very luck and spoke
to him and his wife (Brigetta) once they moved to
Georgia once but things were busy in the world and
we lost contact.
I am trying desperately to locate him now.
I wish I had more information to give at this time
but I am hoping... no, praying you can help me.
Kindest regards and many thanks in advance,

Subject: Photos ROUFFACH - COLMAR pocketComments:
Hello, I am Président of the local French Veteran
association UNC. I am in charge to preserve the
History from the 2nd WW, for the little town of
ROUFFACH in France. ROUFFACH was included in the
battle of COLMAR pocket. February 5th, Maj. Gen.
Roderik ALLENS with the 12thHellcat Armored division
linked up with the Fourth Moroccan mountain division
of the French First corps, monday morning at
ROUFFACH. The COLMAR pocket was split. The Hellcats
are the third division fighting in the 21st Corps.
My problem is, that at this day, I can't found
photos from this event and specially from the "shak
hands". The day before, at the same place, a French
tank was destroyed from a German Tiger. Thanks very
much for your help.
For your information, I meet C. Monika STOY by our "Commémoration
de la Libération de ROUFFACH", the Febr. 5th 2010.
It was a great honor for us.
