Subject: Souvenir Question
Comments: In the 1950's my father-in-law was stationed in Korea during
the active Korean conflict. He purchased two beautiful pictures painted
on silk with brilliant colors. One is a landscape with two Korean
females with parasols looking at a lake and a mountain in the background
and it is signed. The other is of Jesus at Gethsemane and is not signed.
Both were professionally framed in 1955 and have been preserved in
apparent excellent condition. Can you tell me if these were typical
souvenirs commonly purchased by GI's in Korea by perhaps a street
merchant or if something like this would have been purchased from a
local artist? |

Subject: 30th infantry regiment retreat to west bank of maison rouge
bridge, battle of colmar pocket
Comments: I collect war letters. I aquire them thru ebay auctions. I
have the WWII letters of Private Jon K. Smedberg, who was with the anti
tank corp of the 30th infantry regiment, of the 3rd Army Division. In
one letter after censorship was lifted, he writes about the winter of
44/45, saying "jesse owens couldnt have run any faster" than he did, as
he ran down a road to escape German Tiger tanks which were cutting down
soldiers with artillery fire. "the only time the 3rd army had to
retreat," according to Pvt. Smedberg. Smedberg writes in the letter that
he was amazed that he "made it to the river." Smedberg does not mention
the battle or the bridge. But I think he's talking about the retreat of
the 30th infantry regiment back to the west bank of the maison rouge
bridge. Can somebody give me more backround info on that incident? MORE
Importantly, at the east end of the bridge, there was a nearby village,
and Smedberg says a "K company" was wiped out in the v!
illage. He says there were reports that french residents pointed out
hiding spots of the american soldiers to germans. A captain was so
pissed off, that he ordered bombers to bomb the village. Smedberg says
in the letter "nothing could have survived in that village after those
bombers came thru." can anybody shed light on that incident?

Subject: Uhlandschule in Nuremberg, Germany
during May and June 194
Comments: I am trying to find which units
were using the Uhlandschule in Nuremberg, Germany during May and June
1945. Did some of the units of the 3rd Division stay there as occupation
forces rather than going on to Salzburg? If so, which ones? Any
information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!! |

Subject: WWII Decoration 1

Comments: My favorite uncle, Robert Bruce
Hamilton (see photo), served with the 3rd Division from North Africa to
Germany. I understand he was in the Signal Corps (not sure). Our family
history is that he was one of 7 men in his regiment to survive the
entire war. He was decorated at Anzio, we understand with the silver
star, but it may have been the bronze star. Is there any way to find
this information? He never liked to talk about it...Thanks, Art Ballard
