Subject: John H. Gavin Jr. DOW 1/24/1945
Comments: Gentlemen, first, thank you for doing this.
I am tracking the story of US Army PVT John H. Gavin Jr., Svc No.
31231271, from Manchester, Massachusetts, my late mother's brother. I am
doing this with the idea of eventually telling his story.
He was assigned to Company B, 290th Engineer Combat Bn, which was
attached for a few weeks to serve as infantry with the 112th Infantry
Regiment, 28th Infantry Division. He was a BAR man, and went MIA on
1/23/1945 near Colmar, and DOW on 1/24/1945. I do not know how the
28th's area of responsibility related to the 3d Infantry AO although I
believe you were in the same area. I am just taking a chance that you
may be able to refer me to information about what was happening in that
area during the time my uncle lost his life.
I would appreciate any assistance or recommendations.
Thank you,
Robert G Kilpatrick

Subject: Looking for a photo of a flag for gift
My dad served in the 1st battle group of the 3rd infantry division with
basic training in fort benning ga. then stationed in Aschaffenburg
Germany. He was enlisted in Nov. 1958- Oct. 1960 approximately. His
company was company D. I'm trying to find the correct flag or any
pictures of a flag they may have used specific to that company so that I
may have a flag made for him as a gift. Every year he goes to a company
D reunion and I would really like to find something so I can really
surprise my dad because he always speaks so highly of his time in the
company and the men he served beside. He would really enjoy the flag
flying below his American flag in our front yard. If it helps any more
while in Germany he stayed in the graves barracks which I know has a
different name in German starting with a B. I hope I have provided
enough info to assist in helping me find a flag specific to his company.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read my message.

Subject: Division History
Fellow Dogface Soldiers,
I am with the 3rd Infantry Division Public Affairs Web Team. I have been
with the Division for over 5 years and have a huge interest in the
Division’s History. We are building a new Team Stewart Website and I
have been doing massive amounts of research for the history of this
great Division. The goal is to represent the entire history in a new
light. To do this I am reaching out to anyone who can help. Your site
has been amazing for this, but I want to take this even further.
1) I saw a book in the library call “The Third Infantry Division in
Korea” that was sponsored by the Society and was wondering if it is
available via your store or any other place I could get a copy?
2) Also, I am currently searching for the names of every soldier that
gave the ultimate sacrifice in combat with the Marne Division. I have
completed the lists for Iraq/Afghanistan, Korea and has the full list
for World War II. I will need some help with World War I though. I am
currently using the American Battle Monuments Commission to track most
of the names down, but I know I will wind up short. Do you have any
resources that may be of use for this?
Thank you in advance for any help!

Subject: Looking for information on Bernard Goodman
Comments: Hello!
My name is Jackie Goodman, and my grandfather Bernard Goodman (b. 1924,
Pittsfield, MA) served under General Patton at the Battle of the Bulge
and was awarded a Purple Heart. Unfortunately, that is all that I know,
as he never spoke of his experiences during the war. However, his
youngest grandson (my cousin), who did not have the pleasure of meeting
him, is very curious about his grandfather's wartime experiences, and I
am trying to find out any information I came.
If you knew or knew of Bernard Goodman, or have any ideas as to where
else I can search, please email me at jgoodman@nyu.edu
Thanks in advance!

Comments: In 1958 I was part of Operation Gyroscope and stationed at
Fort Benning. We set sail on the UPSHUR, and the trip to Bremerhaven
took eleven or twelve days. I remember some guys suffered from motion
sickness from the time we boarded a troop train in Columbus until we
reached Germany.
I served in Kitzingen at Flak Kaserne from 1958 to 1960 with the 1st FA
Bn 9th Arty.
I have never been back, but I still hope to before I can no longer
travel
I would appreciate information on how one becomes a member of the 3ID

REQUEST #5421
Name: Sharon Tucker
Email: stucker11626@att.net
Subject: looking for uncle's wwii units
Comments: I am researching one of my uncles WWII military records. His
name was Ellis D. Tucker, SN: 38 356 049. He landed in North Africa in
early 1943 and was part of the initial invasion of Sicily in mid 1943.
There is a possibility that he was with the 3rd Infantry Division at
that time.
Is there a way to check your records for a PFC Ellis D. Tucker SN: 38
356 049; SS#: 431-07-9841 to see if he was serving with the 3rd Infantry
Division at anytime prior to October, 1944. I know he served with the
36th Division from sometime in October, 1944 until he shipped home in
November, 1945. He was in the infantry and fought from North Africa to
Berlin. He served with Company E, 141 Infantry, 36th Division in France
and Germany.
I am trying to find the unit(s) he served with in North Africa and
Italy. I have been in touch with the National Personnel Records Center
in St. Louis and his file was lost in the 1973 fire. I have some records
from his time with the 36th. I am looking for his company and division
while fighting in Italy.
Any help you can give me will be much appreciated.

Subject: MOH Winner Lt Robert Craig , 15th
Inf, 3rd Div
I am assisting the NOK of 2nd Lt Robert
Craig in trying to find survivors of the action the killed Lt Craig in
July of 1943.
He was awarded the MOH and was buried in
Sicily for 4 years. His remains were moved to Toledo Ohio in 1947. A
ceremony is being planned for the spring on 2012 to have his remains
buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Can you help?
The plan is to invite any survivors that are
willing and able to attend either the disinterment in Toledo, or the
final internment in Arlington. Representatives of the 15th Inf would
also be welcome. The President, Sec Def, and CoS of the Army will also
be invited, but survivors would be the primary focus as attendees at the
ceremony.
Thanks,
