Subject: Company E (2nd Bn) 15th Inf. / 3rd Inf. Div.
Comments: Hello, I am currently attempting to document the circumstances
surrounding the death of SGT. Ernest F. MATHIAS, asn 31148036 of
Providence, Rhode Island. Sgt. Mathias was assigned to the 3rd
Division's Company E (2nd Battalion) 15th Infantry Regt. As far as I can
discern, he was initially listed as an MIA, during E Co.'s assault on
enemy positions during the "Anzio Breakout", on May 23, 1944. (Re:
Operation Buffalo) Sometime later, on or about 17 July 1944, his body
was located by GRS personnel in the vicinity of the May 23rd attack. His
official status was now changed from MIA to KIA.
As I'm sure your'e well aware, the events of 23 May 1944 were extremely
hectic, & tend to resist any attempt at compiling into a usable
timeline. From my brief look into the day's action(s), I found that E/15
initiated one of the few documented bayonet charges to have occuted
during WW2 !! That charge may have been when & where Sgt Mathias became
KIA ? If your organization has ANY information that may be of use to me
in my research, I would DEEPLY APPRECIATE your assistance. I am
especially interested in any data related to E/15 during May & June
1944, if you happen to have such data available. I THANK YOU in advance
for your kind assistance, & will eagerly await your reply.
Best Regards, Dom Pastore Jr. |

Comments:
Hi, I was just looking at your website for people trying to find out
about ancestors who have a military background, and Im not sure if
anyone can help, but it's worth a try!. I am trying to find my mother's
father, all I know is that he was based in Maindy Barracks in
Cardiff, Wales around 1937, my mum was born in 1938. My nan would never
talk about it, and there is no father's name on my mother's birth
certificate, we think he was an American Soldier, I don't know what
regiment he would have been in, my only hope is that someone may have
had a relative who served there during that time, so at least I could
find out which units were based there then. My mum's mum was called
Iris Whitcombe, and I would really love to help my mum find out
something. Any help at all would be great!! |

Subject: Dog Face Statue
Years ago I was a member of the 3rd MP Company, 3rd Infantry Division,
and was stationed at Leighton Barracks in Wurzburg Germany. At that time
on post there was a Marne Garden and in it was a large bronze statue of
the 3rd Division’s Dogface Soldier as shown on page 29 of the most
recent edition of The Watch on the Rhine. What became of that statue. It
was quite large and I’m sure expensive to move. Is it at Fort Stewart? I
know the post has been returned to the Germans and I know the 1st
Division was there for some time before that. Could you let me know?
Thanks.
Larry Fitzgerald
Webmaster's Note: I believe the
statue was moved to Fort Stewart in Georgia.

Subject: Dean Harvey
Comments:
Hello !
I'm looking for the exact name of the company who was in Champagnole
(Jura) in September 1944. My mother and my father met in this city. My
father Dean b. Harvey was Metis afro American. He had landed in Provence
summer 1944. I think it was Sergeant-major. He then left the Champagnole
to Nancy where my mother joined him, and then the Germany and the
Austria where "he died" in an accident. I lost my mother very young and
I don't have much information on my father. I contacted St. Louis, but
part of the archives were burned.
Can you give me some information. I have 672ème LCRA or 612ème LCRA, but
I do not to overlap for more details.
Thank you very much.

Subject: My Grandfather in the 76th
Dear Sir,
Comments: My grandfather Samuel Zerbe served in the 76th field artillery
(Bat A) 3rd Division and served through the war, and right through the
post war occupation in Coblenz Germany. He was president of Society of
the 3rd Division 1967 at the reunion city of Tacoma Washington. I am
looking for any information of the 3rd's post armistice period as an
occupation force in Coblenz. I have found very little, and would like to
compile a more complete account of that time for him. After the
fraternization ban was lifted, my grandfather met my grandmother (a
German national) at a local dance held by the German Red Cross. They
ended up marrying in 1920 and she emigrated with my grandfather in 1921
to United States.
I am also looking for any information about the 1967 Society reunion
where there were quite a few members from the 76th present as I remember
as a child him talking about it. Any information you can offer would be
greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Freeman
I have attached several photos, and have more if you are interested. I
also have a hard back book of the 3rd divisions service record from 1917
through 1919 which was printed in Germany and offered to all veterans of
the 3rd back in 1922.
