Request: I recently purchased at an estate sale, a complete WWI uniform
of a soldier in Chateau Thiery. The uniform has the markings of the 3rd Division
and it belonged to a Sergeant Geisenberger with the M.O.R.S. unit.
I have a Helmet with the 3rd division insignia, a jacket with
the insignia,
a brass whistle attached to the hole on the collar, A medal of some sort
with five stars on the breast of the jacket, knicker type pants, spiral wraps,
shirt, another backup jacket, two hats, many belts: one reads in German
something like Eine Gutt, socks,
I also have training manuals this soldier used during the war. I also have several maps
of the area he was in. There is also a personal metal mirror for his use, and a canvas
bowl that folds into a pouch. Both jackets have the 3rd Div, insignia on the shoulder
as well as the metal on the breast which is multi colored with five stars on it.
If you have any more info on these items, or know if someone collects,
and would like to purchase these items, I will entertain offers.
I feel someone in your association could benefit from these.
By the way, they are like new, no holes or anything like that.

Diaries of WWI Canteen Worker:
My mother served with the YMCA as a canteen worker attached to the 7th
Infantry, 3rd Division in France during 1918 and with the Army of
Occupation in Germany during 1919. She kept extensive diaries of her
experiences just behind the front lines during many of the battles in
which the 7th Infantry of the 3rd Division participated.
I am looking for a repository for these historic papers describing a
young woman's experiences during WW1 in France. Do you have facilities
for maintaining these documents?
I have prepared a 452 page book reproducing the diaries, letters and
pictures of my mother's records. However, I still need a repository for
the original papers.

Shortly after the German troops left in 1945, my hometown,
Zweibruecken,
was taken over by U.S. troops. The 7th Army, and within it the 45th and
3rd Infantry Divisions, punched their way through Zweibruecken around
March 20, 1945. The 3rd Infantry Division was supposed to have captured
Zweibruecken.
4 U.S. soldiers were ordered to protect my father's factory. At this time we
had a curfew and could leave our house only from noon to 1 p.m..
We had nothing to eat anymore. Those 4 soldiers saw me many times looking
out of the window, and after a few days, they called me over to the executive
office of my father's company. They found out that my father and I had nothing
to eat and they fed me day after day, breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
They gave me cans of food to take home for my father.
My question is, how can I now find out to which Unit those soldiers belonged?
I'd like to say thank you to them even though it is very much later now.
I still know the first name of each of the 4 soldiers: Chris, Mike, Lawrence
and Howard. If we find the Unit in which they served we may be able to identify
the four men. I would appreciate it very much if you could give me a lead and thank you
again in advance.

Request: Army Whistle
Was there such a thing. My neighbor sold his parent's house and let me have
things that was in their basement. One of the things was a old green
whistle
that said US ARMY and L.P.1943 on one side. The other side was kind of
blotchy in the color red, maybe an initial or something, couldn't make that side
out.
It is on a old chain with a hook on the end. Is this an old kids whistle or a real army whistle?
Yes, it is more than likely a real army whistle. The army issued whistles
to both officers and Non-commissioned officers and they were used as signal
devices to give orders on the battlefield. In World War One these whistles
were made of brass and had a chain the attached to a button hole and were
kept in the chest pocket. Because brass was a critical war material in
World War II, they were made of olive green plastic. Yours being dated 1943
and marked US Army is correct for a whistle of that period. Hope this is of
some help. Jeff Reed Fort Stewart Museum

Looking for WW II Movie:
I have seen a video of the Texas National Guard unit , 112th Cavalry Regiment
passing in review for Adm. Nimitz or Halsey ( I don't think any of the vets
in the 112th really knew) on the Southwest Pacific island of New Caledonia in
1942.
In the whatever you call it --- that precedes a film, the "trailer" (?) the
Army Air Corp is listed as the production unit making the film.
Do you have any idea where I might start looking for the original movie? It
included other scenes of the 112th patrolling the island, demos of the motor
pool inspection, of the mounted machine gun unit setting up, and recon of the
hills that made up part of the island, etc.
Could still photos possibly have been made of this event as well. What about
units who didn't get the PR like the 1st Marine Division (as an example),
were photojournalist like yourself assigned to units lower than battalion ?
Appreciate the sacrifice you and your buddies made to keep us free! Look
forward to hearing from you.

contact me. I am planning to publish this and would love to have them add to what I have now. Thanks and I

I am a firefighter of Pioneer Engine Co. #1, Pleasantville Fire Dept.,
Pleasantville, New York. I am also our company's archivist.
We have found a home made service flag for our members who served in
WWII. It has 7 blue stars an one yellow star signifying KIA. Our fallen member is
PFC Ralph Irving Canniff, Co. I, 7th Inf., 3rd Div. Upon further research we
have found from a small memorial pamphlet of all townspeople who served in WWII the following:
RALPH IRVING CANNIFF Pfc.,
Co. I, 7th Inf., 3d Division
"Entered service March 23, 1943. Trained Camp Croft, S.C.; went overseas
after two months basic. Served with 5th Army in North Africa. Then in Italy;
hospitalized two months in Naples before going into action. Wounded in action,
by land-mine on Anzio Beachhead, and died May 25, 1944."
Purple Heart, ETO Ribbon, with one Star
We are in the process of preparing a plaque commemorating Ralph's sacrifice
and the other members who served with him.
I have some questions and a request:
1) The statement above is given by next of kin and may not be entirely correct.
Do the Division's records approximate these dates and events?
Is it possible that he was transferred and later assigned to Co I, 7th
or 3rd Div?
2) Anzio was invaded in Jan. of 1944. From the above narrative I
would assume that he died of wounds 5 months later (May 1944).
3) We want our plaque to be headed with a picture of Ralph which we
have, and the narrative. Flanked on each side of the picture we would
like the small epaulet crest of the 7th Inf, (this is a regiment designation, isn't it?)
and that of the 3rd Inf Div.
I think I can obtain the 3rd Inf Div crest at the West Point PX.
I need help with the 7th Regiment. What does it look like? Can I purchase
one from your organization? Or do you know where I can obtain one?
The service flag and the record of our members who served have
been sitting in the back of a closet in our company room for God knows how long. We will
frame the flag and along with our plaque will be displayed on the wall of our Dept.
meeting hall. Any help or insight you can give is greatly
appreciated.

He is now 80, in failing health and would like to know of any others still alive.

Request: In the early to mid 1950's my mother was an illegitimate child
in Kitzingen Germany. She said that soldiers from the Larson barracks
"adopted" a child for Christmas. According to her they would give them a
dinner and a party at the barracks. She is looking for those soldiers to thank them.
She doesn't remember any names but I was hoping you would have it on record
some where. Her name at that time was Sigrid Wachtler. If you could be of any help
at all to me with this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much!!

Request: Any information about PFC Elmo Mitchell (Born Oct. 7, 1921,
Serial # 19012425, MIA July 10,1943) or his Unit. He did basic training at
Ft. Ord, CA, then was assigned to 3rd Infantry Division, 7th Infantry Regiment,
1st Battalion, Company C, in Fort Lewis, Washington. His unit shipped out for North
Africa sometime in 1942. He participated in the fighting in North Africa and
the invasion of Sicily. He was reported MIA on July 10, 1943, during the Sicily
invasion. Presumably, he was in the landing force put ashore on the "Joss" beaches.
Rear Adm. Richard L. Conolly was in charge of that Naval Task Force 86,
which encountered severe weather. Maj. Lucian K. Truscott, Jr., was in charge
of the infantry and their first objective was Licata, Sicily.
I have a copy of the "Seventh Infantry Year Book" dated January 8, 1942.
I would like to obtain copies of similar year books for the 7th Infantry for the
years 1942 and 1943. I would like to contact any surviving members of
Company C involved in the Sicily invasion who may have known my brother,
or who may have information about the circumstances of his death.
