My father, Louis Hartnell, was a Corporal in the 3rd ID and served in Korea from late 1952 to 1954 (?).
I am looking for anyone who may have served with him. He passed away in 1998 and rarely spoke
of his experiences in combat.  I know he was very proud of his days in the Army, and proud of his Country.
I would like to hear from someone who may have photos or stories that they can share.
Any insight into this part of my father's life is greatly appreciated.

(editors note: This is an email I received today, and I thought the great guys of the 3rd Division could help her.)

I am a graduate student at the University of Illinois studying creative writing.
My one and only project for this semester is a story about Charles F. Bruns,
an engineer with the 3rd Infantry Division, "A" Company.
I have two sons and work full time. Your web site has been an excellent source of information
for me and I wonder if you could put me in contact with a few other veterans of the 3rd Infantry Division.
Thank you for putting such powerful images out for all of us to share.
I've been humbled more than I can say by writing this project.  I'm focusing on Anzio - what an unbelievable story.
Thank you.  Looking forward to hearing from you,

Comments:
The reunion in Phoenix was really great considering the tragic circumstances of Sept. 11th.
This was my first reunion and the fellowship of the members and wives was outstanding!
But the question that I have is, where were the vets who served the 3rd Division
in peace-time Europe during the 60's, 70's and 80's?
Looking forward to seeing ALL of you in Buffalo next year.

My roommate's father died when she was 4.  She is now 48.  He served in the Army and
we have found patches in things of his that we do not know what branch of service of
what decoration they are.  Her uncles (4 of them) also lived in the house with her mother and grandmother.
The patches could be theirs.
We found the "bars" they wore above their pockets on their uniforms.   About 5 pictures of groups,
25-30, service men who obviously posed for these pictures. She has found no discharge papers for
any of them or anything that details for certain which branch of service these men were in.
Her mother was born in 1912 and her uncles were younger siblings of her mother.

1) Do you know how we can find out which branch of service they were in?
2) Where we can identify the patches?
3) How to identify the service bars?
Any information or recommendations are appreciated.
