Comments: I am very much interested in locating, or knowing if he is still living, a good friend who was a
former member of the 3rd Inf Div. He was a bandsman but I'm not sure whether it was the division or a
regimental band. I do know he saw a lot of combat in Italy during WWII, and was awarded the
CIB.
He was with the 3rd Infantry Division is Italy and I imagine he was in the
division or a regimental band
since he was an expert trumpet player. Sgt. Morales had the
Combat Infantryman's Badge along with other
decorations I am not aware of.
He was a native of the Philippines, but later I am
sure became a US citizen. Like so many other GIs he had lots of stories
about Gen Patton. When I knew him in the 392nd Army Band at Camp Lee VA in
1947 I was a T-5 and he was a
T/Sgt, NCOIC of the band and a terrific musician. I was a
lousy trumpet player but we became fast friends anyway.
Like so many other old guys I read about in your scrapbook we become nostalgic
and wonder what happened to our old friends.
Mario may well be dead by this time. I tried to find his whereabouts
through the Army Personnel Center at St Louis
but they said his records were probably destroyed by fire like so
many others.
I tried to track him through the VA but no luck. Hope someone in your
society can help.
I truly appreciate your interest and will continue to go
through your website, So far have
completed 50 out of 86 pages. Thanks again, Norbert L. Simon

Subject: Searching for Information about my Grandfather
Comments:
My grandfather's name is Kenneth Jerome Devine. He was a 1st Lt. in the 3rd
Infantry in WWII.
I believe he shipped out in the summer of 1944 and returned in the summer of 45'
or 46'. Unfortunately,
I don't have many details. I know he was in the 3rd Division (Infantry), and
that he served under "Iron" Mike O'Daniel.
We have some old home movies that he brought back from the war of him in
Germany, but unfortunately that's all we know.
If anyone has any additional information on how my family and I might find out
his exact service dates,
and campaigns which he may have been involved in, we would be most grateful.
Thank you for maintaining this incredible website. It feels like the first true
link to the past that my mother and I have found yet.
Sincerely,
Meredith Devine Owen, and Kathleen Devine

Comments:
Looking for any information I can find on my grandfather's unit. He passed away
when I was too young and naive to
ask him about World War Two. He never offered information but I'm sure would
have told me stories if I had asked.
He told my mother, his only child, some stories but she didn't want to hear
them.
I have a picture of him with a dog outside a military
building. His uniform has the 3rd Infantry patch and his rank was PFC.
I have his French decoration from his uniform and was given his burial flag
which is over my fire place mantle in a case.
I have an older framed photo of him blowing a bugle when he was in the national
guards prior to the war.
I believe he was a mortarman. My mother remembers him at one
brief point being a corporal
and was ask to lead a mission that would have gotten men killed, so he refused
to lead it and was busted down
to PFC and went on the mission anyway.
My mother also told me that he had to shoot at Germans or
Italian pretending to be priests. That's all she remembers from
what he told her. When I was little, I remember seeing an old army patch with
two stripes and a T on it.
Not sure if it was his or someone else's.
Would love to find out how to find his exact WWII unit and hear stories from
anyone who knew him or
about what his unit did. I, myself am not a veteran but did serve 11 years in
the Massachusetts National Guards. Thank you.

This message is addressed to any veteran who was a member of L-Company,
7th Infantry Regiment,
3rd Division, while on the Anzio beachhead on February 29th, 1944.
On the morning of that day, the enemy began
a major attack on the 3rd Division sector. we were in the area, known as
"Ponte Rotto"
I am trying to contact my platoon medic, who shared my
foxhole during the day long barrage
of artillery shells, nebelwerfer rockets and mortars. S/Sgt. Amer our platoon
sgt was wounded
at start of the barrage and needed medical assistance. Our medic made it to our
foxhole but due
to the constant heavy shelling could not take him to a rear aid station, until
the shelling eased at night fall.
It was a day to remember.

Comments: My grandfather was a 2nd Sgt under Gen. Patton in WW2 in
Germany.
He never spoke to me about the war cause I believe it pained him so much, plus I
was young.
I know very little about his experience in the war , but I do know he was in the
3rd Armory,
in Germany and England.
My father, his son has mentioned to me the Brokenwall prison camp
(I hope that is how you spell it) he helped in rescuing .He was shot in the leg
during combat
and was later able to come home to Amarillo ,Texas. He passed away in the early
80's
and very little I know about him. I would really like to hear from anyone that
has served with him.
My hat is off and my heart is with the men and women who have made this country
a great place to live.
Thank You and God Bless You All.

Comments:
My uncle Sgt. Nick H. Gebhart enlisted Oct. 14, 1940. He trained at Fort Lewis,
and elsewhere, and left Oct 22 1942 from Camp Pickton, VA for North Africa.
Was in invasion of French Morocco Nov. 7, 1943, in Tunisian and Sicilian
campaigns.
Battle of Salerno. KIA Oct. 14th, 1943 Member Company E, 7th Infantry, 3rd
Division.
I recently received a collection of his letters and would like to flesh them out
with whatever historical information might be available, or with other personal
accounts.
Many of his letters are brief with no news that would pass the censor. Have no
photos.
His brother, George Gebhart, was sent to OCS and was a Lt. in the same division.
Thanks to anyone willing to share memories.
