April 1945.
My Dad was a British pow who had managed to get away from the German guards on the
forced march.
He was in Beyruth when the Americans entered, they took photos outside the
command post of him and RAF guy,
another soldier and a tall man in a striped concentration uniform.
Would love to be able to trace this photo for him as he is
now nearly 85, and would love to see it.
The American guys fed him with lamb, cranberry sauce and that was the first
proper meal he had had in five years.
He was captured at Dunkirk (Abbeville) in June1940 and in BAB20 Poland until the
forced march in 1945.

I've worked with numerous 3d Infantry Division veterans of the Korean War,
notably CAPT Martin Markley (USA Ret.)
who commanded Company K, 15th Infantry during the battle of Outpost Harry.
My intent is to write a definitive history on that battle.
My first book, HILLS OF SACRIFICE: THE 5TH RCT IN KOREA concentrated on the first year of the Korean War.
Now I'm writing a book on the soldiers who fought the good fight in the last year of that
war.
Here is the help I need. I have interviewed about 30 men who served in the various
combat units that fought at OP Harry,
to include one battalion commander, General Singlaub. But I have yet to interview anyone who served on the divisional
staff, particularly in the G-2 and G-3 sections. If anyone who served on the division staff in
any capacity would consent
to an interview, I'd appreciate their cooperation.
The timeframe I'm particularly interested in is Nov 52-July 53. I conduct my interviews over the phone on
my dime.
I'm an active duty U. S. Marine writing about the U.S. Army in Korea. Strange but true.
My wife's Uncle was a rifle squad leader in the 1st Platoon, Fox Company, 5th INF,
5th RCT in Korea.
He fell on 23 March 1951, Good Friday on Hill 814 ROK. I'm doing this in his honor,
and in honor of all the men who fell in Korea.
Very respectfully, & Semper Fi! Mike
From Martin Markley: The 5th RCT was
attached to the 15th Inf.,
During the Outpost Harry battle along with 2 companies of the 15th, they were
awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation.

Thank-you for providing this web-site. Hopefully the information that I am
requesting is within the scope of the site.
I am looking for any information about my grandfather who
served with the 3rd Infantry Division during W.W.II. He unfortunately
passed away several years ago, and I am left with only a few facts concerning
his whereabouts during the war.
His name is John Landman ser. no.36875061. He entered service on September
of 1943 from Saginaw, Michigan
and did heavy weapons training at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi (I believe he was a
.30 cal. gunner) eventually
arriving Italy on July of 1944.
I believe the 3rd Infantry Division along with others began
the invasion of southern France on August of 1944.
He was listed as missing in action on October of 1944 in southern France and was
through the Red Cross
located at Stalag IIB around December of 1944. He was liberated sometime
early 1945.
I do not know his regiment or exactly where elements of the 3rd Infantry
Division were around
July, September and October of 1944. Any and all information including
maps, contacts, links anything
would be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you very much for any and all responses.

Hope those descriptions might help. I know my Grandfather served in WWII as a SSgt.

Comments: As I read through these pages, I realize that many people are
searching for information
that will bring them closer to loved ones no longer with them. I am no
different.
My father, Thomas Ochs, served in the 30th Infantry Regiment
3rd Division during WWII, and thereafter through 1948.
I have been fortunate to speak with a comrade of his, and learn many things
about those historic times that my Dad
and I never found the time to talk about.
I am wondering if anyone might have information about this time, and about my
Father. Thank you.

Comments: Hello, I'm doing a little research about the 3rd.
I'm wondering if somebody might be able to help me.
I was In the 3rd. in Germany in 1971. For a while I was with the 3rd Squadron,
7th Cav. on boarder patrol.
After that I was sent to Schweinfort ,Germany . Does anyone
know of a way that I can find out what unit was in Schweinfort. Thanks,
John Healey

Go to Classmates.com, click on Military, (Yellow tab at top) click on Locations
outside Continental US,
click on Germany, Click on Schweinfurt, This should list all the units that was
there.
If you click on 3rd Squad 7th Cav and then enter the year you
were there (1971-1973, etc) it will list others
who were there at the same time. You can enter your name at this site.
If you want to contact someone it will cost you to sign up. If you want to
contact someone, give me their name
and info on what page they are on. and I will contact them for you and have them
contact you,
as I have already signed up for a year or you can pay the fee and contact them
yourself.
Good Luck, Tom BLUEWHITEDEVIL@aol.com

My late husband, Kenneth A. M. Klosson, Lt. Col. (ret) USAF, served in the Third
Infantry sometime in the 1940s,
assigned to funerals at Arlington.
I'm finishing a genealogy study for the family and would love to include some
documentation of his service
with this very distinguished group of men. It all took place long before I
knew him but he spoke of it very often.
Thank you so very much. Jeri
