Subject: Info on my grandfather
Comments: Hi my husbands grandfather was in the 3rd infantry division in ?1943?
We are going to his 80th birthday party this weekend and my husband being in the
military would like to honor him with a short speech and dedicate a flag to him
for his service in the military. But we don't know much about what happened
over there he doesn't talk about it all that much cause grandma doesn't like him
to. He was wounded and was a pow in Poland.
His name is William L. Sexton, SR. He was a PFC, with the
3rd reconnaissance troop. He left the United States on Dec 9 1943? on what he
called the "Old Queen Mary" he said she was beautiful! any way we only have very
limited information and he thinks that everyone he knew is now deceased....so
any help you could give us would be greatly appreciated.
I know this is short notice but it was a last minute decision to even have the
party as his health is failing.
Again many thanks. Respectfully Kathryn L. Pruett

Comments: My dad served as combat engineer. North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, France,
Belgium, Austria also Rome.
Searching for more info, unit, regiment, citations. His name was Matthew Diabo,

From Martin Markley:
Private Matthew Diabo is listed on page 551 of Donald Taggart's book,
The History of the Third Infantry Division in W.W.II as a member of the 10th
Engineer Combat Battalion.
As a combat battalion in W.W.II, the unit engaged in infantry fighting with
distinction at several periods-notably
during certain periods on Anzio Beachhead,
Its primary work other of laying wire and mines, however was more hazardous
since the men had to go ahead
of the infantry front lines. The 10th Engineer Battalion's most widely
publicized single feat in W.W.II
was its construction of the bridge at Cape Calava on the North coast of Sicily.

Subject: My Father, William Joseph Howe
Comments: My Father's name was William Joseph Howe...he was from Morrisdale, Pa.
He was killed in 1964 when a truck ran into the back of our family car...he left
a wife and 5 children
ranging in ages from 7 to 13 (I was 11)...
We know little about his time in the Army...when I was
younger I seem to recall that he was on the front lines w/ a tank unit...
my older brother, who has since passed, stated he had earned three Bronze
Stars...I believe he was a Sergeant...
he was quite a guy, from what I remember, and had many
friends...
any guidance to research his military involvement would be appreciated...
Stay safe and thanks for your service to this great country...

Subject: Jack Doyle Freeman
Comments: I am the nephew of Jack Doyle Freeman, who perished
on May 29, 1944, and was listed as
“Missing in Action or Buried at Sea”. His service number was 35873421.
At the time of his death, he was survived by his parents, Roy and Nesbitt
Freeman, and his younger brother,
Charles H. Freeman, who, I am told, enlisted following the family’s notification
of Jack’s death.
Charles was my father, who died in 1993, but who would never discuss his
experiences with either of his 3 sons.
I am interested in any information about my uncle Jack, whether it be
battle-related, training, time in service or whatever.
Thanks for your consideration

Subject: 15th Infantry Regiment in WWII in Bavaria near Augsburg
Comments: I am a historian and would like to write a history of Gersthofen
(near Augsburg in Bavaria) at the end of World War II. I am especially
interested in the last days of the war here in Gersthofen and the handing over
of the city to the American troops. The then Mayor of the city, Mr Georg Wendler
was a Nazi and did not hand over the city, instead of him a doctor and a
restaurant owner handed over the place to the incoming American troops (15th
regiment, 3rd battalion?). Gersthofén had to be bombarded because the mayor
didn't want to hand it over voluntarily.
The bombardment of Gersthofen took place in the afternoon of
April 27th, 1945. Have you got army reports of this process taking place?
Perhaps there are weekly and semi-monthly reports about this time, as I know
from the studies of OMGUS and OMGBY files,
yet in there I found no files about Gersthofen at the end of World War II.
How was the former mayor treated by American troops, was he punished? Why didn't
he cooperate?!
Who became the new major of the place? The relevant time is between April 25
and May 21st, 1945. Georg Wendler, the Nazi mayor of Gersthofen died in 1980,
so there is no need in holding back the files any longer.
I only know that it was the 15th infantry regiment that occupied Gersthofen on
April 27th in the evening.
I would be very glad if you could help me.
