Subject: For my friend Carol Gales, Spokane, WA

Comments: I am trying to help a friend identify exactly what Unit, Brigade, Battalion etc., etc. that her son is in. She only knows he is in the 3rd Infantry Division, Mechanized Unit as a mechanic (I think) with support services.

His name is John Gales and was at Ft. Stewart in Georgia. Having more identifying information would help her when watching the continuous news coverage, such as when the support unit was taken as POW's, she did not have enough information about his exact group and so that was very difficult for her until she heard they were out of Texas, not Georgia. Can you help?

Subject: searching for military record of family member.

Comments:
Dear Sirs,

Last year I attempted to use the NAIL database at the National Archives and Records Administration to see if I could locate the old World War II service records pertaining to my Uncle: Army Lt. Earl B. Chambers. (He ended his career as a Captain, I believe. He also served in the Pacific, the Japanese occupation and Korea.) It was just basic curiosity. However, the database had said that the WWII service records had all been destroyed by a fire. Is there any way to trace a military career through records kept by various units?

I have seen old military pictures of my uncle taken with a group of turbaned Arabs, but I knew only from stories my mother had told me that he had been, at least in North Africa, with the "Quartermaster Corps." Just several weeks ago I found some old photos of my Uncle at OCS bootcamp in Wyoming, with the date April 14, 1941 on the reverse.  Is it possible to determine whether he was involved in the "Torch" landings in Morocco in November 1942 or the North African campaign? Assuming that the 3rd ID had quartermaster corps units, then his record could be traceable that way, if not from "payroll records."

Thank you for your assistance, and I hope I'm not asking for too much in the way of old information.

Sincerely yours,
David Carson

I stopped in Ft. Stewart a couple of years ago and to much of my gratitude I saw that the 3rd ID was based there,
I also noticed that the 10th Eng. Bn. was there. Today when I went onto your web site there is no link to the 10th Eng. Bn. just the 11th, WHY???
What happened to them, and why are they not part of the 3rd ID???

Subject: Michael De Marco and  Dan Crockett

Comments: My name is Tonya Keener. I have two people that I love very much in this war and I can't find out
anything about them . Michael De Marco is from Ft Stewart Hinesville GA (army E-7)
He said second brigade and he has been in Kuwait since sometime last year.

The other person is Dan Crockett (army) not sure rank and out of Huntsville Alabama, I think they are both trainers /platoon leaders and
Michael should be in a Humvee.

I work nights and work long hours but can't sleep due to worry. I don't care where they are if it is secret I just want
to know that they are okay and maybe a site that I can go to to get updates on the two of them.
I can't imagine loosing either one of them to a devil like Saddam Hussein.

Subject: Sgt. J. Frank Hutchinson (Anzio, etc, 1940's)

Comments: What a wonderful site. I've been here a couple of times before and think you've assembled a great resource! Like many other folks here, I'd love to piece together more of my father's life during his service in 3rd Inf Div during WWII (especially during these perilous times, we all reflect on the great sacrifice of these men/women...THANK YOU!). My father was Sgt. J. Frank Hutchinson ("Hutch"), from Ala/Fla. He frequently spoke of his service, and I know he was in the states 1941 til about '43 or '44 and then went overseas to N. Africa, Anzio, Austria, etc. While in the states, he was at bases in Md, SC and then an Infantry instructor at Ft Benning, Ga. I have great stories and some pics I'd love to share, if anyone knew him...I know he attended some Anzio "alum" events later in life and saw some of his comrades there. I don't know the exact battalion he was in or the specifics of his travels...Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks again to those who keep this site! going -- my prayers to our wonderful armed forces!

Subject: Captain Lyman K. Peterson 41st FA, 3rd ID

Comments: My father, who died in 1993, served in the 41st FA From mid-1940 until he was severely wounded about a week before the end
of the Battle for Sicily (Aug 1943?).  He landed in Morocco and Sicily.  He received the Silver Star but never told any of us how he earned it.
I presume it was a story of death and slaughter that he preferred to forget.

He did tell several light and amusing stories about army life but never anything about combat.  I would love to hear from anyone
who might have known him or can tell me anything about the 41st FA.  I'd like to swap stories.
He was Captain Lyman K. Peterson, born 1918, came from Utah and spent a couple of years in Army Hospitals after being wounded.

Subject: LTC Cecil D. Chesser

Comments:
I have heard rumors through the years that LTC (May have mad COL) Cecil D. Chesser is deceased and am trying to verify this.
I last saw Cec in 1981 when he was at Leavenworth at CGSC.  I was the Chief of the PAC there who served the students.
Cec was my first Co. CDR when we were with 123 Sig. Bn, 3rd Inf Div.

I was the first female officer assigned to the 123 and Cec was the luck person to have me in his unit, LOL.
He was a great person to serve with, I could not have been more fortunate to have been assigned to his unit.

Anyway, I heard he was given a Bn in Korea and died there from a heart attack.  Lost track of his wife Donna,
so was never sure on how to verify this.
Thank you to anyone who can provide me with any information.

Last Monday evening (3/17/03), I watched a segment on ABC News about the Mobile C2V tanks in Kuwait.  The interview was with Maj. Gen. Buford Blount, III, conducted by Ted Koppel.  I was so extremely impressed with the deliverance of the information, and the passion of Maj. Gen. Blount, and now in the last hours of the "count down", I have had him and others in my thoughts and prayers.

My question:  If I should want to write, and support him and his troops in anyway I can, how would I be about to get email, or a letter to him.   I want all the troops to know that prayers and support are out here for them, and they are not out there alone in there mission, or in their fears.
Thank you

Subject: Father's Assignment to 3rd Infantry

Comments: My father, Delbert Heber Mitchell I believe was assigned to the 3rd Infantry during WWII.  I don't know what Company, Division, Battalion, or Brigade he was in, but he was reassigned from the 519th AAA Gun Battalion out of Fort MacArthur, CA., I believe around Mar of 1945. He went to Ft Hood for infantry retraining, and was sent to Europe, arriving there around 12 Apr 45.  My father's records were destroyed in the fire at NPRC in 1973, and all I have is his honorable discharge papers.  I also have a brass uniform insignia saying "US" with a number 3 beneath it.  These are the only items I have left from his collection.  Nothing in his discharge record says anything about being assigned to the 3rd Infantry, but a friend of mine who was in the 3rd suspects he was, because of the brass uniform insignia.  My father's service number was 39 680 574.  Unfortunately, my father passed away in 1978.  I hope you can help me with this reque
st.

Comments: I want to let the men and women of the 3rd Infantry Division to know that they are in my thoughts and prayers during this time of world crisis. They all hold a very dear place in my heart as the 3rd Infantry Div. FRG was my first assignment in the Army. I was the first female officer assigned to the 123 Signal BN in 1975. After 123 I was with the 198th Personal Company.

I am looking for a way in which I can support our men and women overseas. If anyone has any ideas or address where I can send care packages to I would appreciate the information and assistance.

My father was air force. I am the one who was assigned to the 123rd and with the 3rd ID. I need to see how to get a set of crests. I gave mine away over the years to kids who were collecting them. Now I would like to have one to way on my school lanyard for the kids to see since they are always checking this out for new pins. Any suggestions. I will keep looking for that address. I am cutting out all the articles that they are putting in the paper on the 3rd. Makes me wish I was there with them. Too bad they are not willing to retrain and send in all the menopausal women. Menopausal women with M16A2's is something that Sadam would never expect.....LOL

Comments: Hi;
Reading through all the comments helps me understand I am not alone in my quest to understand a brief period of my father's life during WWII.
For right now I would like to be educated on the ranking, if you will, of infantry, battalion, division, regimen, etc. I don't understand the correct order of each and I think it would help me narrow down the correct numbers for each, that is the numbers I currently have about my father's placement. I believe he was in the 3rd Army under Patton, in a Rainbow division, wounded in Luxemborg 1/45.
Any direction will be appreciated. Karen Schumacher

I would like to hear from anyone who served with my dad, Tom Martin, in the army during World War II in the south pacific theater. I know he was stationed at Fort Indiantown Gap in Pa. He was a Bronze star recipient who seldom talked about his war experience. He did say that he broke his neck while on leave in New Guinea and was sent to guard P.O.W.'s with only a nightstick in half a body cast. He was in the army from 1943 to 1946. Tom died last August at age 78 after a long battle with several illnesses. Any information or memories would surely be appreciated.

Subject: Info on Vet, CPT Jeffrey Smith

Comments:
Some time back I found an original M41 field jacket with a 3rd infantry patch on it, the person I got it from said it belonged to CPT Jeffrey Smith of 3rd infantry division. I searched the WW2 KIA database and did not find him there, which means he survived the war, I do not have his serial number nor do I know what regiment he was in. Anyone know anything about him? help would be appreciated.

About the jacket: It has quite a few sun burn discoloration on the back, some field repairs, no lining, and has an original tag in pocket with 1942 date and a huge size of 46R. Mr. Smith must of been a large man and I know only that he had a Garand because the person I got the jacket from was also selling his Garand Bayonet.
