Subject: Searching for Stilly
Comments: To whom it may concern,
I am unclear if this is the right spot to search but I thought it might be a
good start. My name is FC1(SW) John Redford. I am an active duty Navy E-6
(first class) currently serving at the Surface Warfare Officer School in
Newport, Rhode Island as an instructor. I am in search of my grandfather, a
member of the 3ID, stationed in Atsugi, Japan in 1949. I do not have a full
name or social. Here is what my grandmother was able to remember of him:
- Nicknamed "Stilly"
- An E-5 or E-6 serving in Atsugi, Japan
- Served as a mechanic for a motor pool
- About age 26 or 27 in 1949 (born approximately 1922ish)
- From Wisconsin (Central or Northern)
- Blond-reddish hair, of German descent
- She says he could dance like a devil 'till the sun came up
Any information regarding Stilly would be greatly appreciated. His absence in
my family's life has been extremely pain-staking. To find him would truly be a
dream come true for all of us and become a remarkable story it its own right.
Can you please help me and my family?
Very Respectfully,

discharge he is eligible for VFW status. According to people who grew up with
him he was never elgible for the VFW. Yet on his marker put up last week it
states he won the bronze star. According to discharge which many of us feel it
has been altered nothing is mentioned about the bronze star. It does list

Christa Geuer Casey- looking for Afro-American GI that befriended her in 1945
Comments: A few Days before Christmas 1945, a little girl in cardboard shoes
stood amid the ruble of a ruined German village, her sobs drifting in frosty
plumes on crystal air. She was headed for school--but her makeshift shoes had
suddenly come apart.
Her mother had wrapped the child's feet in salvaged cardboard, securing it
with twine. But when the twine unraveled, Christa Geuer stumbled. She stood
there, immobile, wondering what to do. Barely of school age, she did not know
how to retie the knots.
The war was over, but the sight of American troops was common that Christmas
season in occupied Zweibruecken, near the French border. As Christa--named for
the Christ Child-- stood staring at her threadbare socks, a convoy of truck
wheeled around a corner.
One of them stopped. A big soldier "with a soft voice and soft hands" jumped
out, and in broken German said, "child, I know how it is". Then he tied up her
knots and sent her on her way. Christa glanced back, amazed at his kindness,
at his acquaintance with German, and at his face in her Aryan world, he was
the first black person she had ever seen.
Christa Geuer encountered her soldier again a few days later, when he provided
her a Christmas memory that would endure more than a half a century.
The highlight of that first post war Christmas of 1945 was the party that
American Soldiers gave local children at the convent of Heilige Kreuz, the
Holy Cross. The crowning moment came when suddenly before her was the very
soldier who so recently had knelt to tie her cardboard shoes.
Now he knelt again--but this time he untied the twine. From a big box, he
removed real leather shoes. One pair after another, he slipped them on Christa
until finally a sturdy, ankle-high pair did the trick. As he laced them up, he
commented discreetly on Christa's socks, kaleidoscopes of improvised yarns.
They were as pretty, he said, as Joseph's coat of many colors. Beaming, and
eager to please him, little Christa stood up in her new shoes and did a
pirouette. She stopped short when she was his tears; it puzzled her that he
would weep while providing her such joy.
Now, she says, she knows more about giving and receiving--and she's convinced
that despite all the tinsel and glitter, Christmas still shines brightest from
the inside out.

Webmaster's note: Our website has
a description of the term "Rock of the Marne" at
http://www.warfoto.com/3rdsociety1.htm
The text of the story is:
Near Mézy, France, July
1918. Here the German Army made its last great attack of World War I.
It struck in the Marne River area along the road to Paris, and the weight of
the blow fell on the 30th and 38th U.S. Infantry Regiments of the 3rd
Division. This was their first fight.
Firing in three directions, blasted by artillery fire, taking all flesh and
blood could stand, the regiments held on doggedly and threw the enemy back
across the Marne. This defense checked the Germans' assault and made an Allied
offensive possible.
General Pershing called it "one of the most brilliant pages of our military
annals."

information.

I am looking for any information that you can provide on the my grandfather,
Richard E. Bauguss. I know he served time in WW II under Patton.
Unfortunately, he passed away before I was a year old.
I know he has a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, which my grandmother gave to
me many years ago. He died in 1966.
He also served in the Korean War and retired a Lt. Col. I am mostly interested
in his WW II service at this time.
I know I haven't given you much information but if you can provide any
additional information, or point me in the right direction,
I would be extremely grateful. Thank you,

I have no family members to ask about the information, I have so many
