Name: Cecilia Hodge
E-mail: celka36@yahoo.com

Subject: Search 3rdiv 10th Battery Company "A", Melvin F. Hodge

Comments: I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may have served with my late husband, Melvin F. Hodge (Sgt E-5) (Michigan) 3rd Div, 10th Btry, Co. "A" Trained at Camp Chaffee, AK and Fort Hood, TX (1952) - Aboard USNS Gen. C.C. Ballou (Nov. "52) Served in Korea 1952-1953

I realize that 50 years have passed and perhaps his name will have no recollection, however, maybe someone will remember the following: A picture was taken of approximately 50 soldiers (including Mel) in a bunker in Korea. There was one soldier holding a box of Tide Detergent and another one holding a box of Lux and two holding canisters with A-47 written on it. Only one soldier is wearing a helmet with the name of "Sayles".

Also, I understand that the Company had a dog that disappeared mysteriously. Among many questions, I would like to know what area he may have been serving at to earn the Korean Service Ribbon w/2Bronze Service Stars. Some names that may have served with him are: (Goodwin MA )(Lou!
x NY) (Rupert PA) (Steinwele IL) (Layne CO) (Manter MA) (Miloch IL) (Kuczek IL) (McGarock Jr WI) Thank you.

Date: April 27, 2004                     REQUEST #2413
Name: Michael G. Wall
E-mail: MBAPCBC@aol.com

Subject: Stephen J. Wall

Comments: I would greatly appreciate your help, if possible, with two requests.

1. How can I find out how to hopefully obtain a medal that was awarded to my dad, for action during WWII. He was awarded SS, BS, PH, CIB, and DSM. He never received or lost the Dis. Ser. Medal. I have written the Veterans Affairs, Disabled American Vets, etc. and unfortunately was told that his records were destroyed in that warehouse fire in St. Louis in the 70's. He has discussed over the years briefly, and has accepted whatever is to be. But I know that deep in his heart he would like to have it. He is turning 80 this July. I have copies of his discharge papers and citations, if that would surface in this request. His name is Stephen J. Wall, he served in Europe from 43-45.

1) Is there a way for him to receive a new Distinguished Service Medal, 2) could it be possible for someone from the 3RD I.D. to present it to him.

We, his family are having a surprise 80th birthday party for him, and thought this would be the biggest surprise of his life. We would be more than glad in helping with expense of request.

We here all appreciate how brave and dedicated our service men and women are in the military, especially the 3rd ID. We also will understand if our request cannot be handled, because of constrainst that you might have.

My dad has never asked much from the Army, or the Disabled American Vets, in the past,
and would never ask for anyone to go out of his way for him. But I know that he did his duty and gave his all. So pardon us if we ask for him, he is a great man.

Thank You and God bless

Webmaster's Note: Go to our FAQ Page (Click Here) for the procedure for replacing Lost Medals.  Stephen J. Wall S/Sgt, Co. M 7th Infantry Regiment, was awarded the Silver Star at Houssen, France Jan. 25, 1945 as noted in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII".

Subject: Herbert J. Hinson

Comments: I am Marthan Hinson's oldest son, and I'm actually writing my master's thesis on my granddad's WWII service record. She forwarded your email to me in the hopes that I could send you copies of her dad's photos. I will attempt to do this in this email, though I've never sent jpeg files before, so I am not certain I'll do it right.
Thanks so much for your help; I'm casting my net wide, though I recognize it's a long shot anyone will recognize or recall my granddad. I've contacted about ten vets who were members of L Company, 15th Inf Reg, 3rd ID during 1944, and have heard back from about half. Maybe the pictures will be a good way to get some information.
Thanks again--take care.
Sincerely,
Joel Potter

Subject:  Pfc Raymond A. Purol--3rd ID WWII

Comments: My friends father was with the 3rd ID for all the campaigns up to and including Anzio.
On 2/11/44 a bad head injury from shrapnel almost killed him and put him out of the war.
He was in Miami, Florida hospitals for almost nine months of recovery. He has a Combat Infantry Badge which means he was either in the 7thIR, 15thIR, or 30thIR, but his discharge papers don't say which one.

He was awarded the PH for the injury. Raymond passed away 3/1/2003 so asking him isn't an option--his surviving wife doesn't know.
We will send NPRC (St.Louis, Mo.) a request for records, but the 1973 fire probably got 'em (80% chance)--we might get lucky! His service number is "16 001 072" Is there anyway of determining which IR he was in?? His son and I are doing a memorial for him and would like to get downto at least the IR level. Can you guys help??

Webmaster's Note: Pfc Raymond A. Purol is listed as a member of the 30th Infantry Regiment  in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII"

Subject:  First Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized

Comments: I have been able to document my husband's first tour with the 756th Tank Battalion, attached to the 3rd Infantry Division from Africa to Italy. I even have a copy of the battle that he was wounded in. He is listed as such in "The History of the Third Infantry Division". I have quite a bit of documentation to share regarding the 756th Tank Battalion. My son and I were even fortunate enough to attend their reunion in San Antonio, Texas last year and it was wonderful. However, after being wounded in Italy during the Battle of Cassino and being shipped back to the States, he shipped out again to Central Europe in April, 1945.

His Honorable Discharge lists only "First Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized" Army of United States. He came back in October, 1945 with "The Big Red One" patch on his left shoulder, I still have his uniform. The Department of the Army in Carlisle, PA lists the unit with the 1st Infantry Division assigned at different times to V111 Corps, V Corps, Third Army and XV Corps. However, I have not been able to find anyone or read anything regarding this last outfit. It is as if the unit did not exist and I do not know if it was attached to any specific Armored Division. I am willing to share a lot of information and addresses for research if I can find someone who has information on the 1st Reconnaissance Troop. I am desperate to finish his story for our children and grandchildren. Help!!

Comments: Could you please send me a copy of the requirements for a person to be a guard at the Tomb, this article is circulating on the internet and I am trying to verify if this article is accurate.  Some parts of this article contain some requirements that seem like they would be pretty difficult to find people that would qualify, are these alleged requirements accurate?
I will pass this article to everyone I know but would like to know that this information is accurate.
A set of the official requirements would really be nice then I can attach them to the article when I foreword it.
I have personally witnessed the the tomb ceremony and it is awesome, I regard these guys as really fine American men, if only we had more of them. God bless them all. Thank you

Help. I have tried looking on the net for information relative to my fathers unit during WWII. Becauses of the fire at the records building in St. Louis in 1973 mush of his information is lost. I do have information they sent me indicating he was in the 629th QM LDRY Co. However, he was wounded in the infantry in July 1944 near St Lo France. Received the purple heart and bronze star.
Do you know where I can get information? Was the 629th attached to the 3rd?

Comments: My father, John H. Richter, was a refugee from Germany who enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, and served from (I think) 1943/44 onward. He spoke very little about his war experiences, and downplayed what he did. Eventually I came to understand that he was assigned to SHAEF and, among other things, interrogated SS prisoners, guarded document repositories in captured Nazi headquarters and possibly gathered information in preparation for the war crimes trials.

My father died in 1994. Recently, looking again at his personal effects, I found 3 SHAEF badges but also a 3rd Infantry badge. How can I find out more about his 3rd Infantry experience? Thanks.

My grandfather served in the 3rd I.D. during World War II, and landed at Normandy. However, this is all of the information I can find about him...and I'm not even sure if the Normandy part is accurate as it has been handed down to me. Subject: Looking for a WWII Soldier

Comments: My family in Italy hid an American soldier and I would like to find him. He was found outside the village of Pietrastornina (located on a small road between Avellino and Benvenuto). Germans occupied the town at that time. He spoke excellent Italian and family claimed he was a colonel. Fighting did occur in this town. Once the US forces secured the town, this man was "presented" to the US Army by my great-Uncle who was mayor at the time.

I am hoping the unit who fought in the town and recovered this soldier and hope that they would have recorded his name. Can you help me? Based on the information given to me by the Military Archives in MD, Avellino became a goal by 9/27/9143 and was under control by 9/30/1943. They suggested that the 3rd Infantry Division was in the area at this time. I do not know what he was doing there but I suspect he was on a recon mission. Any suggestions about who I can contact? Thanks, Linda Parlatore
