Subject: William (Bill) Northrup

Comments:
I never got to know my Grandfather, William Northrup, as he was killed in action. March 15, 1945, leaving behind a wife and four young children. I am looking for anyone who may have known him during the war. Any information, stories, photos, any memories would be welcomed.
The only information I have is that he served with the 301 Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division. I am told that he may have been buried in Germany and then moved to France at the end of the war.
Thank you, Tina

Comments:
I'm trying to locate any military information regarding my father and his 3 brothers. They grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio.
My father, Ed Disken was assigned to the 739th Ordnance Heavy Automotive Maintenance Company. He was a T/3 and was in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. What was the 739th main company or Army?
His brother Thomas was also Army, 4th ID, 113th Chemical Impregnating. Does anyone know anything about this group?
Brother James Disken was USN on a mine sweeper in the Pacific from 1/19/42-1/9/46. He was a quartermaster.
The 4th brother was John (Jack) and served in the USMC, but I have no years.
All of the brothers have since passed away. I would appreciate any information regarding knowledge of any of the brothers, or their units.

Comments: I'm trying to find anyone who may have known my brother Vaughn Renton. He was in the 3rd Infantry Division, 15th regiment. He was killed Jan 26th 1945. My other brother and I would love to talk with anyone that either knew him or could shed any light on the circumstances of his death, we don't know where he was killed. We think it was either France or Germany. I used to write a soldier named Frank Bastone he was a friend of my brother, and I would also appreciate any information on him also. Thanks a lot, Bertha Renton Graham

Subject: Willard Dave Evans

Comments: Hey, I don't know if I hit the right spot. My great uncle, Willard Dave Evans, served literally alongside Audie Murphy in several campaigns, at least starting with Salerno. I'm looking for information regarding his service record. Willard, born circa 1923 (his birth year varied, as did several of his brothers), died in Late December 1998 at his home in Greenwood, SC.

He served well enough to earn a silver star and a purple heart. He never talked much about the war, and I respected him too much to pull out what was obviously pretty painful to him. I would like to get some information from his service record.
Thanks,
Worthy B. Evans
(Formerly with 299th Engineer Battalion, Fourth Infantry Division, from 1994-96)

Note from Martin Markley:
Staff Sergeant Willard D. Evans is listed on page 486 Of the History of The Third Infantry Division in World War Two as a member of the 15th Infantry Regiment.
On Page 392 he is listed a a member of D Company and he was awarded the Silver Star Medal  8 November 1944 at Biarfille, France

Subject: Commentary on Leon Lipan, 1st or 2nd Ranger Battalion

Comments: Good evening,

I'm searching for any information about my uncle Leon who was in either the 1st or 2nd Ranger BN at Anzio on or about 22 February 1944. He was captured and remained a German POW for sometime--escaping 3 times. I remember him visiting his older brother (my father), mother about 1947 in Catonsville, MD after being discharged from a military hospital. He was returning to his home town of Bay City, Michigan.

My husband & I have just returned from the WWII Memorial dedication in Washington, DC today. What an uplifting and sobering experience. Everyone we encountered was overwhelmed with the sacrifices made & grateful for information shared. Expressions of their appreciation to every 'vet' they encountered was obvious & oh, so well, deserved. Unfortunately, I didn't encounter anyone from the 3rd Infantry BN but did leave a request on the Reunion Hall bulletin board.

My uncle died many years ago and never spoke of his wartime experiences to us except for that first night when he visited my mom & dad. I was only 7 years old at the time; but I still have vivid memories of my dad's retelling of Uncle Leon's experience. Research has told me that of 767 men in the 2 Ranger battalions who initially landed on Anzio, only six eventually returned to Allied lines.

Thank you for your time & any information you can provide.

I am trying to find out about what my father did in WWII. His name was Luchen G. Haga (Hagy) and he was from Saltville, Virginia. Subject: Looking for those who served North Africa, Anzio, Monte Casino, Po Valley

Comments: I am looking for anyone who may remember two soldiers. One my father in law Louis Balika, tells me he served with the 7th cav, a mech. infantry batt., the reorganized 85th infantry, 2 Bat. George Company. The changed units where a result of injuries in battle on one occasion. He remembers his tank hitting a mine. He was later found alive by recon units in the dark. Landed in Casablanca, then Anzio, and broke out and advanced to Monte Casino and later the battle in the snow for the Po Valley. It was during this time he was reassigned to the 85th. He served with my uncle Ray Isberg in a heavy weapons squad. He carried his ammo for his BAR. I found this out when looking at pictures my future wife had. They are identical to the one I had of my Uncle. I am hoping to tie up some loose ends and my father in law would like to find anyone who is still alive. He remembers staying overnight in a Dukes castle once and enjoying the wine at a monastery following a long battle. My son is trying to document his grandfathers stories and is looking for additional information. Thanks

Subject: Staff Sgt. William B. Fitzgerald, 289th Div. Co A.

Comments: I am looking for information in regards to my father, Staff Sgt. William B. Fitzgerald. He served in the Army from 1940-45. He was in the European War and received medals and 2 bronze stars. His training was of a pastry cook. I was hoping to find someone that might have known him and could tell me of his travels and over Europe and what his medals were actually for. He has past away many years but just recently I finally received copy of the medals he received but with no explanation of how and why. I know he enjoyed playing the piano, soft shoe dancing and played his harmonica. I remember as a child he often told me to look for him in Army pictures that he was in some. There is a photograph of a football team from Oxford High School that shows O'Daniel -- according to the grandson of another player -- as a team member. The photo is dated 1910.

Any information you could provide about General O'Daniel's biography would be helpful.

Subject: Anyone know SSgt. Ignacio J. Garcia - WWII

Comments: Looking for more info on my uncle. Never met the man but his sister (my Mom) tells me the story. He was a tail gunner in a B17 whose plane was hit and he was shot while flying over Austria. He made sure everyone of his crew members had a parachute and safely jumped out of the plane. Before the pilot jumped, he noticed my uncle was wounded and that there were no more parachutes left for my uncle. He tried to persuade my uncle to jump with him but my uncle pushed him out of the plane and then steered the plane away from the parachuting crew members and into a field somewhere in the Austrian countryside.

This all happened in 1944. People from a local town buried him in until I believe 1946 or so when his body was returned to Los Angeles for final resting. My mom remembers hearing this from the pilot and a few crew members who visited my grandparents to relay his bravery and thank them (him) for saving their lives. My mom recalled this day very vividly and never felt prouder. My grandparents were later presented with the Purple Heart for his actions. Although a longshot, if anyone knows of this man (my uncle) or the story, please contact me.

Comments: Hello,
My name is Nicole Beauregard. I am writing and attaching a picture that my mother obtained recently of a man she believes may be her father.

This is what is believed to have taken place. This man was at Fort Drum, NY in the fall of 1942 and met a woman who he had a relationship with, she was from Maine and was visiting her sister in Connecticut. They went to NY to visit the base and she met this man. The woman who gave birth to my mother has never provided any further details about this man, all we have is this picture.

Based on the patch it is believed that he is with the 3rd United States Army, however, we have no idea what unit or division. Maybe someone recognizes the uniform or the picture. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

My father was a POW in WW2. About all i know is that he was in the war between 1941 and 1945. I was very young so I didn't pay much attention I don't guess. But I have a photo, a standard military picture of his army group. on back is has a name of David Pond Willis, post photographer Fort Dix, NJ the series number on the front of the photo is DC987. its just a picture of their group , and you can see a bunch of military jeeps in the back ground along with a few military trucks. My father is the last man, on far right side in the very back row. I am trying to restore this photo. but I was wandering if anyone knows where I can get a duplicate of this photo. On back of the photo is some purple lettering that reads: Original Prints of this picture , maybe had by addressing David Pond Willis Post Photographer Fort Dix, NJ give number on face of picture $1.25 each post paid $1.50 each COD
If anyone knows where I can get a copy pls email me back an let me know, if you think you may have a good copy of this photo, I can email you a copy of the picture I have so you can see if you have the same one, but I'm trying to restore it so I can print it out an it be the same size as the original. this picture is about between 2 1/2 to 3 ft long about 8 inches wide. If anyone knows where I can get a new copy , pls let me know. Thanks, and God Bless, Tim

Comments: Looking for information on my uncle, Homer C McCleary. He served in the 3rd infantry division in world war II. He enlisted in either Forsyth or Billings, Montana and was discharged with a rank of Sergeant. Don't know much about his service record since he was hesitant to discuss it. Do know, however, that he was awarded several medals. He spent some time in the hospital while in the service or immediately after. I remember that he said he had some buddies from Lamedeer, MT. Don't know when he was discharged, but he was in Colstrip, MT in 1947. Homer was born in 1919 and passed away March 8, l986, buried in Hardin, MT with full military honors. As family historian, I would like to find as much information on his service time as I can. He took his basic training in Ft Lewis, WA. Subject: Dick Dean Palmer

Comments: My father, Dick Dean Palmer, served in the 3div. in WW1. He is now deceased. I would like to obtain his service record information, could you give me an address etc. where I might obtain this info? He was in Battery B 10th Field Artillery all through out the American involvement in WW1. Was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Silver Star, French Croix de Guerre and as I understand was recommended for the DSC which he didn’t receive due to the war ending on Nov. 11. He and a Pfc Ravenscroft volunteered as runners for the Headquarters Company when most of the communications were taken out and the vast majority of the runner killed or wounded. They were reported missing in action and next of kin notified. When the returned to the Battery on 15 July my father wrote home to inform them he was alright but the letter never arrived in Wheatland, WY. Until late October. What I would really like to find are the citations for his various medals.

Comments: My Uncle, Dalton Pulsipher, was in the 3rd Infantry 3rd Infantry Division (taken from his grave marker). We know that he served under Patton but don't know much more. He was killed September 22, 1944. I'm hoping to find out more about where he was killed in France. If anyone has any details regarding the 3rd Infantry 3rd Infantry Division during that time period I would be interested in learning more about it.

I am just trying to find out some information about my grandfather's service in WWII. I know he was in the Third Division and served in Italy and with the influx of troops after the Battle of the Bulge. If you could shed some light on what unit he was in that would be great.
Thanks,
Josh Sapir

Comments: I am looking for anyone who has any recollections or knowledge of what happened to my grandfather, David C. Collinsworth. He was with E/15th from approx 16Jan45 (as a replacement) until he was wounded 01Feb45 during the fight for the bridge over the Rhine-Rhone Canal near Durrenentzen.
Pepaw spoke very little about his time in the service but he was always very proud of the time he gave in 1945. Any help would be appreciated since he only spoke of three or four things and only at his own prompting.

My father mentioned something about being a member of the 275, but he couldn't tell me if it was an armored div or medical or what. I am starting from the beginning. Thank you in advance.

Subject: surrender Yokuska naval base

Comments: My ship was present Tokyo harbor Sept.2,1945. pce(r)849.
A contingent of ships personnel was present ashore witnessing the surrender ceremonies of Yokuska naval base.
I have read articles of the make-up of allies surrendering forces, but no mention of our presence as observers.
Can proof of our presence in that location at that time be found. I think August 30.
Sincerely,
Louie Benedict
