Subject: Leather patch with a bird with branches

Comments: I have a question. My friend’s father was in the 3rd infantry. She brought his jacket here and was wondering what all the different medals, emblems, etc. that were on the jacket. My husband was able to answer all of her questions except on the the front of the jacket over the right pocket there was a leather patch with a bird with branches. It was triangle and we believe made of leather. It was sewn on it after the jacket was made. Can you tell me what the patch was? Thank you for your time in this matter.

Comments: Gustavo Carrillo Guardiola is my mom's cousin who was KIA 2 April 45. He was a member of the 3rd Infantry Div. Co C. What I know is that he was killed while crossing the Rhine River. My mom was young and has very fond memories of her cousin but she cannot remember the name of the book. She does remember seeing not only the book but also remembers the author interviewing her aunt. It would mean a great deal to be able to locate the book for her. Any possible information would be greatly appreciated. Please e-mail me with any information. Thank you, Richard Vasquez

Subject: 66th Black Panther Division, 264th Infantry

Comments: My deceased father, Robert Burch, of Nicholasville, Ky. was sent to Fort (then Camp) Rucker, Al. before being sent overseas to fight in WWII. I am anxious to find someone who may have known my dad as he would never talk about the war. He was a lieutenant, but I do not remember if he was a first or second lieutenant. Also, I have just returned from The New Orleans D-Day Museum where I did some research trying to put the pieces of my dad's life together during the time he served in the war. There is a book written by one of the veterans of the 264 Infantry Division of the 66th Black Panthers Division. My dad was Caucasian. I am desperately trying to locate that book. In New Orleans at the museum, they said they had sold out of that particular book. I believe the author is Wessman, but just not sure. Do you know of any books written about the 66th Black Panther Division, 264th Infantry OR any veterans who might be able to help me? Thank you so very much for your time.

Subject: Information on my father, Donald E. Smith, AKA George

Comments: Hello, I am trying to find out any information about my fathers WWII service. I do not know what unit he served with, but he did mention that he was in Italy, France and Germany. Unfortunately, he has since passed away, and I would like to have more information to tell the grandchildren. He did not have his discharge papers, and they were lost in the NRPC fire.

His name was Donald E. Smith, AKA George. He went overseas with a 1st Lt. O'Rourke. He was wounded by German artillery and was with gentlemen by the names of Bill Williams and Ted Newman. After being wounded, he was shipped home and discharged. He was underage at the time, but I do not know if that had anything to do with his discharge.
Any information, or direction would be welcome. Thank you. Jason

He was in a battle on December 23, 1944 on the Rhine across from Strasburg. The enemy was coming down hard and he was with a Sgt. Weekley at the time. He does not know his first name. They were taken POW and marched to Stalag 7a in Mooseburg. Johnny is looking for any info on Sgt. Weekley. Thanks

Comments: My heart goes out to all who request info, its like there is a void or an emptiness from not knowing. Like many others my dad said nothing about what he experience and I'm beginning to understand why. What he experienced was so traumatic they buried it deep. This impacted the rest of their life and affect ours also. But I can start to understand why he was the way he was. They had a tough job and they did what they had to do and I think something they had to do they may not have been proud of. I don't know what he encountered but I'm just trying to understand.

Trying to figure out groups divisions regiments you get lost in the numbers. But I have pictures showing him in the 14th Armored Division under Patton's 3rd army.
I found some article that this unit was part of the team that liberated many prisoners at the Buchenwald concentration camp where there were bodies piled 5 ft high and 70 ft deep.

I'm trying to find info about this any help is greatly appreciated.

My uncle, Salvatore A. Scifo was killed in Nov. 1944 in Mariadorf, Germany, near Aachen. Before he went overseas, he married a woman in Brooklyn, NY. She was pregnant when Uncle Sal went overseas. I think her name was Martha. They had a child, I think a son. After he got killed, my family never heard from her again. Rumor has it that she remarried several years later and may have had her second husband adopt the child. As a result, the child's last name may have been changed. I would hope that my cousin contact me. My Uncle Sal served in the 105th Engineer Battalion, 30th Infantry (Old Hickory). Subject: Cecil Edwin Turner

Comments: I found your site and wondered if you could help me find the records of my dad's military service. He died in 1986 and talked very little about his war experience. A few years ago when our mother past away, I found stacks of V-mail letters to his parents during WWII. I'd like to put the pieces together of the sketchy information the censors allowed through the mail.
His name: Cecil Edwin Turner
Birth: August 13, 1918 Roscoe, Texas
He was drafted sometime early in 1941. He was part of the 36th division, T-patch Texas group and mentions the 7th army he was with all but 4 days of the war. He was a radio operator and landed in Africa and advanced to Italy Sept. 9, 1943. While his group was in Italy, he sent some letters from France (Feb 4, 12, 14, 22, 25, 1944) when he and 2 others worked with the French army. He was given a commendation for his work with the French for staying behind and manning the radio while the rest of the soldiers evacuated the area. He sent the coordinates of the advancing enemy so artillery could be notified and cover given. In his letter he stated ," I am with a party of three and we are with the French. You no doubt have read of how the Americans, British, and French are cooperating to win the war. We represent the 36th Artillery at the French Artillery. The French are good soldiers." Do you know anything about our work with the French even before the invasion? Was he working with the French underground?
He returned to Italy in early March, 44 and came ashore in Southern France sometime during the summer. Then on to Germany in '45. Where and what he did in Germany is unclear. He had some photos of mass graves of the concentration camps I am guessing. He stayed and helped occupy Germany until his release sometime in the Fall of '45.
Anything you can tell me would be helpful--where he trained, dates and places of his service and a good book to find out what all his division took part in.

Thanks for your help

I have been searching for a way to reach out to members of that community but there is not much on the internet about the 3rd ID during the cold war period. There was just nothing sexy going on at that time. Plus it also predates the World Wide Web. Anything you can do to link me with soldiers from that place and time would be helpful. Subject: Book on 3ID in Korea

Comments: I am not sure if you really can help, however anything is worth a try.
My father served with the 3rd Inf. Div. in Korea. He has since passed.
He had in his possession a book about the 3rd Inf. Div. that showed detailed maps and actions of the 3rd Inf. Div. while in Korea.
I am looking to purchase a replacement book on the 3rd Inf. Div. in Korea. I have my dad's copy, however it is in very poor condition. The book has both ripped and missing pages.
Do you know if it is possible to obtain a replacement book and who I would contact?

Subject: PVT Albert Frankel 30th Infantry Reg. 3rd Div.

Comments:
I'm looking for any information about my uncles' service during WWII. The Department of Defense says his service record was lost in a fire many years ago. I have a picture of him with a Black Panther insignia on his shoulder, which I think is the 66th Div. The only other information I have is from his grave in Epinal, France. PVT Albert Frankel, Service#32876584. Died November 2nd 1944. If anyone could tell me what his unit was, and what was happening on the day he died, I would be extremely grateful. Also if there is any way to find unit records, (if any still exist), please let me know.
Thank you for your time, and God bless you all.

Webmaster's Note: Pvt Albert Frankel is listed in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" as a member of the 30th Infantry Regiment ( KIA p.516).

Comments: Did anyone serve with John Lloyd Moore, 3rd Army, 90th Division, with T and O Patch (for Texas and Oklahoma). I think he was a sergeant, but I am not sure.

My uncle was a native of Northwest Arkansas and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He survived the war and came home in 1945. He passed away in the mid-1960s from heart disease and was living in Kansas City, Mo., at that time.
He was born in 1911, so he would have been in his 30s in wartime.
I would like to be in contact with anyone who served with him and knew him. He said very little about his wartime experiences. Thanks, Mary Migliore his niece

Subject: about my father, John F. Kreager

Comments: I am hoping someone remembers my father, John F. Kreager. Sadly, he died in 1990 without telling me much of his time in the war. He was in the Battle of the Bulge as a tank driver with Co A, 2nd Tank Battalion, 9th Armored Div. His discharge papers states he was also in Africa and the Middle East. I am hoping someone remembers him and wouldn't mind sharing those memories with me so I can share them with my children and grand children. I want to know everything, good, bad -- happy and sad. We are very proud of him and all the veterans who fought for us and all the innocent people who wanted to stay free during such a horrible time. God bless all of you. Thank you for sharing with me.

Subject: Information about My Father's Korean War Service

Comments:
My dad served in the 3rd Infantry Division in the Korean war between 1951 and 1953. I know he was a E5 and had a mos of a radio operator but not what outfit he was with. He never talked about his war experience at all. Come to find out from his brother (who was a plane captain in the USAF at an airbase outside of Seoul at the same time) said my dad came to visit him one day dressed in a Chi-Com uniform complete with fur cap. My dad alluded to his brother he was involved with a unit that carried out reconnaissance missions across the 38th parallel. My father passed on some time ago and he never spoke about his experiences to me, my brothers, or my mom. Now I am curious about his war record and what he did over there. All I have is his name: Hung Chong Kam, dob:8 Aug 1929, born a Chinese American, and was drafted out of Wahiawa, Hawaii. My mom is trying to look up his discharge papers and hopefully I can give you more information. Any possible help or avenue of research would!
be helpful.

Subject: Joseph Silletto

Comments: Joe Silletto is my uncle and I know he was severely wounded at Anzio - the only survivor of his platoon(?), and that he lay wounded for quite some time among the bodies until he was found. He spent years in various VA hospitals and facilities, but was eventually able to walk and return to his family. He lives now in North Dakota. I don't know any other details because he has always been very emotional when the subject came up. I know he has a purple heart and bronze star. is any more information available?

Comments:
I am the sister of Greg Orndorff. I am trying to find out as much information as possible on how I can reach him when he returns to Iraq. I would also like to find out how I can contact him now. I am in Child care right now, at Burlington United Methodist Family Services, in Burlington West Virginia. I do not have internet access there. I would appreciate it if someone could give me a call before 9 p.m. anytime, and let me know about my brother. It would take a lot of pressure off of my chest. Just say that you are calling in regards to my brother, and they will understand.

Subject: Finding lost buddies

Comments:
My father is a WWII Army Veteran in the 3rd. Infantry Division. He has lost touch with two buddies over the years and is wondering if they are still alive. Do you search such requests?
Thank you,
Michele

Webmaster's note: Michelle, just send us as much information as possible (name, unit, hometown, etc) and we'll post it here. With a little luck, someone will remember and contact you. Also there are many websites such as VetFriends.com    that search for military friends and relatives.

Subject: Re: Gene Barnett 937th Battalion 142nd FA WWII

Comments:
My dad, Sgt. Gene R. Barnett, served with the 142nd Field Artillery during WWII. I know it was mobilized out of NW Arkansas and I *think* it was the 937th Battalion but I can't find more info than that. His DD214 says he served in Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. I'm trying to trace his exact movements during the war but without knowing what units, battalions, etc, he was attached to, this task is turning impossible.

He was only 54 when he died from a heart by-pass operation in 1974. He had a photo album and a book about the 142nd FA about his time in the army and we spent many hours going through them but his explanations were very simple as I was quite young at the time. Even then he found it hard to talk about what happened during the war and so much of what he told me has been lost to me.

If anyone knew him, served with him or any units he was attached to, or can give me *any* info to help with my research, I'd be eternally grateful!

Thank you all - and MANY thanks to all our past and present military personnel.
