Subject: Sgt. Carl Q. Key, 216th AAA Battalion

Comments:
I am trying to fill in some holes in my uncle's military service as his personnel records were among those destroyed in the fire at St. Louis.

He was a medic in WWII with the 3rd Ranger Battalion in North Africa, Sicily, and Salerno and Anzio in Italy. In the battle of Cisterna, after initially being captured while working with the wounded at the 3rd Battalion aid station when it was overrun, he was able to escape and was one of the few Rangers from the 1st and 3rd Battalions to make it back to friendly lines after the battle of Cisterna.

I have been unable to determine what unit he served with after the survivors of 1st, 3rd and 4th Rangers were disbanded and sent to other units. I understand that some of the Rangers were transferred to the 1st Special Service Force, however it has also been speculated that after his escape he would have most likely come back into either the 7th or 15th Infantry Regiment lines, and being a medic could have hooked up with one of the line units from one of these regiments.

I do know from his discharge papers that in addition to the earlier campaigns he also took part in Rome-Arno, Southern France and Rhineland campaigns. The unit he was with when discharged in June 1945 was the 216th AAA Battalion, and I have pictures of him with other medics and a Jeep with the 216th AAA markings. However, I have been unable to find anything on this unit other than a phone listing for a contact that is no longer in service. I am trying to find out if the 216th AAA was attached to either the 7th or 15th Infantry Regiment or to find any trace that my uncle may have served with either of these units after Cisterna. His personnel records were among those destroyed in the fire at St. Louis
Thank you for any help you can give.
Barry Key

Society of the 3rd division's Martin Markley Response
Barry,
I have searched the book the History of the Third Infantry Division in World War II.
Your uncle is not listed as a member of any of the division units and the 216AAA is not listed as having been attached to the division.
I will forward your inquiry to our webmaster and newsletter editor for publication.
Good luck in your search.
Martin Markley
Martin:

I was just typing in some more history in the timeline of my uncle’s service when I noted that the 3rd Ranger Battalion was attached to the “Joss Force”, 3rd Infantry Division for Operation Husky when the 3rd landed at Licata. Nothing to do with the subsequent events at Cisterna, but an interesting footnote as it looks like the Rangers and the 3rd fought together through the Sicilian and Italian campaigns, at least up to Cisterna.

Barry

Barry,
Thank you for the additional information.
This may be of interest;
On page 51 of the Third Division book the 3rd Ranger Bn is included in the "Troop List Operation Joss""

Quote page 54 The initial assault was carried out by only four battalions,: one from each regiment and the 3rd Ranger Battalion, attached. ... The 3rd Ranger Bn went ashore on Beach Green. .. The 3rd Ranger Bn began disembarking on Green Beach at 0300, achieving tactical surprise. The men were able to cross the beach and pass through a wide band of defensive wire before the enemy was aware of the situation. When he opened fire the gun fire gave away locations of the enemy weapons and the Rangers were easily able to subdue them..... Then after the naval shelling of Licata the regimental units together with the Rangers approaching from the eastern and captured the town by 1130. The first major objective was taken. ...... Page 58 With the 7th Inf in reserve, the first phase of the drive to Palermo was borne by the 15th and 30th Regiments and the 3r Ranger Bn. Moving northwest from Raffadali toward Cattolica the Rangers met no resistance and continued to move toward Calamonica where they outposted the left flank of the division.

I want to know what Infantry Division he was serving in when he was killed. I've seen his grave marker and it reads 35 Inf.,3 Div. I was wondering if he served in the 35th Infantry Division,or the 3rd Infantry Division. I have his name and a A.S. Number. I guess my question is could I get a casualty list,or killed in action list from the 3rd Infantry Divisions archives. If not, perhaps someone could point me in the right direction. Subject: Pfc. Robert Overwater - KIA WW II

Comments:
I am looking for info on my relative, Pfc. Robert L. Overwater of Chicago who was KIA on February 11, 1944 near Ponte Rotto, Italy. According to his Report of Burial he was with the Medical Detachment (although another document says "D Co.") of the 30th Inf. 3rd Division. RoB was completed by Capt. Edward G. Paar. Burial service was performed by Maj. Lloyd Langford. He was originally buried at Nettuno.
Pfc. Overwater was 19 and had been in the Army for 11 months when he was killed. I'd appreciate any info from anyone who may remember the name, or members of the 30th who can shed some light on unit activity at that time. Thanks.  Brent Sedo

Subject: Where O where is my brother buried?

Comments: Our family imploded during and after WWII. I was born in Madison, WI on January 17, 1938. My older brother, Lawrence W. Grahn, served in the U.S. Army, and spent several months in hell, during the several battles at Anzio, Italy. He was wounded and died of those wounds in early 1944. I am most hopeful in obtaining information concerning the circumstances of his wounding, and subsequent death; his place of burial, and his widow's name, if at all possible. I was only 4 when he gave the last full measure of service, and was not in a position (or intelligence) to ask mother and father for that information. Everything from those years is shrouded in silence, and darkness. So, in my mind, we won the war but lost our family, and many never to be known and experienced memories. Thank you for your help. I know I'll meet Lawrence in eternity, and I am looking forward to that reunion. Your friend in Texas, Richard (Dick) Grahn. "Once a Badger, always a Badger."

Subject: Names of naval ships at any port in DownEast Maine during 1944

Comments:  Hello, You probably don't get a request like this one very often, or maybe you do. I need help in finding out the names of naval ships at any port in DownEast Maine during 1944. To make a long story as short as I can, My Father-in Law's biological father is said to have been one of those men. His son (my husband, ) and daughter have had health issues that can only be traced back to this missing link as they are the only ones who have these particular problems and the problems are said to skip generations. The only "generation" not accounted for is what would be their biological grand-father. My father- in- law's mother died when he was only 5 and never gave any clue of who his father is except for that he was in the navy. I know this means a lot to him and us also. I don't really know where to begin a research project like this one so any direction you can give me is greatly appreciated.
Thank you Very much
