Subject: info on my grandfathers service

Comments: I am looking for someone or something to go on regarding my grandfathers time in the army 1943-1945. He was with the 749th Railroad Battalion somewhere in the Philippines. He is been deceased since 1982, and I want to put together sometime of history for my mother. My grandfathers name is Raymond Phillip Paine and he would have been about 82 years old now, he was from Massachusetts. He didn't talk a lot about his military service but like I wrote this is regarding a history for my mother. Even more so could anyone tell me if when he left the Philippines if he stopped on Kwajalein (Marshall Islands ) as that is where I am currently living. Thank You. AnnMarie Carlson

Subject: Private Jon K. Smedberg

Comments: Looking for any info on Private Jon K. Smedberg. He was with the 3rd Division during WWII. He served in the battles at Anzio in Italy. HE was in mine-detection, and then served as anti-tank gunner. I collect war letters, and I just acquired the war letters of Private Smedberg, that he sent home to his parents in Chicago. They are his 1945 letters. Fantastic stuff. After the Germans surrendered, and Censorship was lifted, Smedberg gave a great account of the war. He talks about the gunners having trouble taking out a German Tiger Tank. One shot missed. Then Smedberg fired again. Hit his target on the tank, but he didn't penetrate all the way through. Then the turret turned until it was targeted on Smedberg's position, so he dove into his foxhole, while the tank fired at his position. He says "I could have been brave and patriotic and taken another shot, and they would have been sending you my dog-tags and death notice."

Martin Markley writes: Jon K. Smedberg is listed in the History of the Third Infantry Division in World War WWII (Page 529) as a member of the 30th Infantry Regiment.

He was involved in reconnaissance, and for a time stayed with a family in the French Resistance in Cherbourg. He died in 1967, and I would love to find out more about him. Subject: Robert Chester Abey

Comments: I am searching for information about my uncle who served in the Korean War.  His name is Robert Chester Abey. He lived on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.  His birthday was May 19, 1929.   He served with Co. "K" 7th Infantry Regiment; 3rd Infantry Division. He received the Korean Service medal with 3 Bronze Stars; the Army Commendation medal, army of occupation- Japan is noted.  His pictures show he was connected to the 443 AAA at least in 1952 and was at some point stationed in Germany during that time.
The photos of Korea- show notations " Hamhung North Korea- Hell Hole" on one; there are photos of his unit cooking in what seems to be a fox hole; one of him and another Am. soldier squatting down with 7 Korean soldiers standing behind them in a group shot of the squad. There are photos of the camp in heavy snow; some in warmer weather.

My Uncle was a not very tall- 5' 3" and had the nickname of "Rabbit". Blonde hair, blue eyes. He was one of 17 brothers and sisters, all of whom have died except the sister he wrote home to and she is getting on in years. She wants to know about his service history as do the many nieces and nephews he had. He didn't die in the war, but was killed in a car accident shortly after his discharge. None of know his story- but he sent home MANY pictures of "the boys" from Korea and Germany as well.

Our family is happy to share the pictures with the people in the photo or their survivors. There are between 30-50 pictures, some I will send to this website. We would really like to know what my uncle did in the army, where he served, his story. We know nothing other than what we have guessed. We will ask for his records- but I don't have a lot of hope we will find them. Time is passing quickly for the last surviving sibling he has so anything you can provide would be helpful. Please contact me at monga@dmv.com  or 410-758-2368. Thanks,
Kathy Abey

Webmaster's note: Kathy's photos may be seen on the 3rd Division Photos-Korea page at: http://www.warfoto.com/3rdsocietyphotos4.htm

Comments: Does anybody from the 3rd ID have any info on member Charles Reed Wheelis?
1916 to 1962.

Served in WWII in the 3rd ID with Audie Murphy. His daughter is my next door neighbor and she is trying to find any or all info, including photos, of her father for her family.

All she knows is that he served with Audie, was captured sometime during the war while in the capacity as a runner, and sat out the war in a concentration camp being used as medical experiments.

He was in the VA hospital in Dallas for the rest of his life until his death in 1962. His daughter, Annie, knows very little more than that. Any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

Comments: I a looking for people who served with my Uncle in Korea and Germany. I am not sure of all the dates but the Commendation Ribbon/Medal citation for the Korean War says Nov.17 1950- July 15, 1951. He served with Co. K, 7th Inf. Reg., 3rd Inf. Div. Some of the photos in Germany show him standing in front of HQ of 443rd AAA. I have a lot of photos of him with the other "boys" in his unit. Korean photos: There is a photo of him and another Am. soldier with the Korean soldiers who served with their unit; one of the unit cooking something in a fox hole (dinner?); a big encampment at Hamhung, North Korea; one of the camp under snow; some of them digging a pit/foxhole/gun emplacement; and many more. I know nothing of the unit actions. The DD214 notes Korean Service medal w/three bronze stars; army of occupation- Japan. (Germany is not mentioned nor the Commendation medal but I have the pictures and citation- and the gate assignments in Germany.)

There are also many photos from Germany. One is a photo of my uncle and a very tall fellow that was his friend apparently. My uncle was 5'3" and this other guy must be 6'3" easily. The notation says "White and me"; another photo of what looks to be the same tall fellow notes "Sam". There are photos of the guys having a few beers somewhere together; one of the ship that took them overseas, one of the statue of Liberty with dirigibles around it, may have been taken as they left port. The pictures are in pretty good shape. You can see the faces of these men clearly in many of the pictures. I am happy to share them.

It would be nice to know if anyone remembers my Uncle or can tell his involvement (good or bad) while he was in the military service. He was killed in a car accident shortly after he was discharged from the service so no one know his story. Please email me at monga@dmv.com. Thanks.

My dad, Jesse H Roberson was assigned to the 750th Tank Battalion. He is 90 now but all his life he claims that Gen Patton was killed earlier then what is the “OFFICIAL RECORD” my dad says Gen Patton was crushed by an armored personnel carrier. He says he saw it and knows Gen Patton was dead. Has any one else heard this or something different then the Official Record? He also claims the reason for the “cover up” was to fool the Germans.
