Subject: Kenneth Lockard

Comments: My name is Tracey and I am looking for information and am hoping you may be able to help. My Grandfather Kenneth Lockard served in Company E as a squadron leader in the 15th infantry. His military records indicate that he played a significant role in the battle at Outpost Harry on the evening of June 10, 1953 and into the following morning. The records indicate that he was eligible for the Silver Star for bravery. Grandpa didn't speak much of the war and when he confided in my Grandmother he told of all the death and terror of that night. He never did claim his award and never really spoke of it.

As a tribute to him and also to honor my Grandmother my 9 year old son, Austin and I are trying to take the steps to see if we can bring his medal home greater than 50 years later. Do you have any advise or suggestions or information that may be of use for us? You may reach me via email  at tracey.hunter@sbcglobal.net. Thank you so much in advance.

Comments: Believe he died just after the jump-off across the Ill River enroute to Holtzwihr and eventually Colmar on 1/23/1945. I believe I stepped over his body as entered a German shoe-mine field. Would really like to know for sure. He came from Port Washington, WI.

Both he and I completed our basic training at Camp Wheeler, Macon, Georgia, and after a leave at home, once again came together at Fort Meade, Maryland. On 1/1/1945 we together with about 15,000 others,
shipped out of New York harbor aboard the Queen Mary, landing 7 days later in Scotland, followed a few days later by train to Southampton in England. Then by small ship across to LaHavre in France.

We proceeded by train (in box cars) to the repo depot at Epanoy. From there we were sent to join the 3rd. Division at R & R just prior to their jump-off into the Colmar Pocket on the evening of 1/22/45. Shortly after we crossed a small river bridge, we encountered enemy machine gun fire and we all hit the dirt. Shortly later a group of other 3rd. division troops swept across the front and the enemy withdrew.

We once again started up, only to encounter a German shoe-mine field. As we moved thru the field, the air
cut by an occasional blast and a scream of the victim. At one point I stepped over or alongside one of the casualties. It looked like Dick, but one didn't stop to look. I have always wondered if it we he. Recently
checked some of the casualty lists and did not find his name, is that information available?

In 1999, in response to the 3rd. Division paper  letter that I had written, I received a letter from S/Sgt. John Petruska. I recently received a news letter from the division where his named was mentioned as having been awarded a medal at a cemetery in France. I couldn't make out if it had occurred in the past , or recently. As it was just under a box announcing the death of a former 3rd. comrade, I wasn't sure that John had also died. Please let me know if you have any info on either of these men.

Do you have a list of camps that the 3rd Division liberated or a History Book any Help or Suggestions will be much appreciated.
I was 18 year of age thru most of all the Five Campaigns I went thru. I can still see the Third Inf Patches all around us at some place in time.

From: Dickayf@aol.com
To: tools.one@verizon.net

Dear Bill,
The list provided by Mr. Ronan is most helpful. Here is my description of the camp and where it was:
The sub camp for Dachau where I was imprisoned was Augburg – Haunstteten as the forced labor was at the Messersmitt Werkat Pfersee. For all practical purposes it was a Concentration Camp that was named by the Nazis a Labor Camp. Now in or about April 11, 1945 we were marched (Death March) to the Bavarian forest between Birkach and Klimach where we were going to be executed. Now am I to assume that as stated Mr. Ronan’s list, that the 756th or 601 TD BN 3rd Infantry liberated us? This seems plausible as this was the unit maneuvering in the area of Augsburg as stated in Mr. Ronan list. We were approximately 30 to 40 km in the woods. If this is so how do I get in touch with the above TD units, I found in your list of TD membership, 2 members of the 601 TD BN but none in the 756 BN. For the 601 BN a Col. Walter Tardy I think would be a good resource to start with. Another possible resource would be Loretta Cooper Smithsonian Institute.

Please thank Mr. Ronan for this first and very important info and for his troubles. I thank you again for your support ad efforts.
Sincerely,
Dick Friedemann a Survivor

P.S. I have prepared a letter to Col. Tardy asking him for additional info. I also received a letter (e-mail) from Mr. Ronan with further explanation of my questions. I will thank him direct for his help in this matter.

Subject: Edward T. King

Comments: I'm active duty military serving overseas in Italy. We have friends in Holland who by virtue of family legacy, have been taking care of the grave of a U.S service member who was killed in WWII. From the information on the gravestone, this soldier was a Florida resident. They've asked me if I can find any information regarding the service member that their family has taken care of now for over 60 years.

The information I have is:

Cemetery in Margraten, Holland
Name King Edward T Rank PVT
Serial Number 34050600 Unit 3 Med BN 3 Div
State of Country: FL
Date of Death 26 Mar 45 Decorations: BSM PH

Any help would be greatly appreciated including what unit this soldier may have been associated with.
Thanks . V/R Mike Taylor

Webmaster's Note: Pvt Edward T. King is listed in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII"on pages 416 and 555, as a member of the Med. Dept., Co C, 3rd Med Bn. He was awarded the Bronze Star for action at Pontelatone, Italy, on October 16, 1944.

Comments: My Dad was in the 1258th Combat Engineering Battalion of the 3rd Army. He was in the Battle of the Bulge, his unit built the platoon bridge over the Rhine River. His unit was one of the first units into Dachau to free the Jews. When we went to the Holocaust Museum, we also learned he had been to Auschwitz also. We took him to the WWII Memorial and we search the database looking for any of his war buddies. If there is anyone out there who served in this battalion or if you know your family member served in this battalion, please contact me. One of the people we were looking for was Joe Tuscano from the east coast.

Subject: Daniel Loften - 703 Ord Co., Korea 1952-53?

Comments: I am the daughter of Daniel Loften, who served in the 703rd Ordinance Company, 3rd Division in Korea (1952-53) and I . My father passed away in 1989, and although I vaguely remember stories of Korea and Japan in my early childhood, I'd like to share stories of my father with my nearly 16 year old son (also named Daniel Loften). As my father passed away when my son was 6 months old, he has no memory of his grandfather outside of pictures and what my mother and I can remember. If anyone served with my father and has stories to share or simply wants an email/pen pal (in either myself or my son), please contact me at e.loften@comcast.net . Thank you so much! Ericka

Subject: Historical Scrap Book?

Comments: I need some help on finding out some information regarding a scrap book I received from one of my patients. I work for Hospice of Arizona and a few years ago I had a pt that had passed away. His family did not want any of his belongings so the group home he resided in was going to throw it away. Well the book was or is in bad shape, but the pictures are really great. I have had it put away and just got it back out. A lot of pictures of blown up buildings, men playing ball, Hawaii, looks like pearl harbor, grave pictures with unknown on them one with the unknown X-7. Please let me know if there is someone I can speak with regarding this scrap book. Thanks Connie

Subject: Earl Shelby Huff

Comments: I am looking for information on my great-uncle Earl Shelby Huff. I know that he was killed in action on January 24, 1944, was a private with the 15th Infantry, 3rd Infantry Division from Oak Grove, Louisiana, and that his ID number was 18186138. I'm guessing that he was at Anzio when he was killed, but am not certain. My grandfather refuses to talk about his war service or that of any of his brothers, so I know nothing else about him. If you or anyone else has any information on him I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,

Webmaster's Note: Pvt Earl S. Huff is listed in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" as a member of the 15th Infantry Regiment, KIA on page 490. If the date of death is accurate, the location was most likely in southern France near Colmar.
