Comments: I'm trying to find out information about my fathers service with the 3rd infantry division during WWII. His name is George W. Kuhl. He was in the 7th Infantry Regiment/H Company. He was connected with the 3rd ID from 18 October 1944-discharged 10 August 1946.
He took his basic training in Camp Blanding Florida. I have his ID number if that would help uncover any information about his time with the division.
He is 80 years old now and in failing health. I'm trying to gain any information about his time in the army.
l would appreciate any information or direction as to where l could get information of his service.
Sincerely, Roger Kuhl

Comments: I have been seeking information on my father who served with the 13th "Black Cat" Armored Tank Division. I just can't seem to get to the right site. He passed on in 1998 & He would not speak of his actions during the war. So I have little to go on. If you could be of any help in this matter it would be a God send. Thank you for remembering all those who gave so much.
God Bless.  L.D

Find my Grand Father

Comments: Hello,  My name is Muriel, I live in south of France and I'm looking for information about my grand-father. He was an American soldier of the World War II, I know that my Grand-Mother knew him between August and December 1944, in Southern France in the little town of Port de Bouc or the town called Martigues.

I think his name was John GUINLEY, or GINLEY, or KINLEY or MAC KINLEY.
I know he was killed in Germany in 1945.

I have not more precisions because all the documents about him that my grand mother had, were unfortunately stolen a long years ago... my grand mother didn't'  remember very well... Please, I'm searching for my roots...
Could you say me if the 3rd Infantry Division stayed in Southern France after ANVIL/DRAGOON?  Do you know him ?
Who could help me to find my Grand Father ? I just want to give him some flowers...
Thank You.

Subject: Did my grandfather belong?

Comments:
I have been trying to search for information re. my grandfather's service during WWII, Vernon Michael Fendler of St. Louis, MO. His papers show his army qualification (at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, MO.) with the 7th Infantry (??Regiment, 3rd Division maybe??). His papers show battle participation in Rhineland, Southern France and Central Europe. He was awarded three bronze stars.

He used to speak very little about his combat service but mainly spoke of his non-combat service. So, little is known about with who and where he served during his combat service. At one point, he got frostbite on his feet, along with several other foot problems, during a march in France (according to him) and was removed from combat service. I do have a picture of him standing in front of a French hospital in his long-underwear.

Later, after this, he was placed as manager of the Karlsburg Brewery in Bremerhaven, Germany. His discharge papers list him as a member of the 335th Engineers General Service Regiment. I assume he was transferred there after the frostbit and during the brewery management.

I, through limited research, believe that he belonged to the 7th Infantry Regiment of the 3rd Division. I am wondering if there was anyway to ascertain whether or not this is correct. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Additional information on him or his service would be greatly appreciated.

Webmaster's Note: Pvt Vernon M. Fendler is listed in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" on page 456, as a member of the 7th Infantry Regiment.

Ohio on June 14, 1953. He was a member of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 65th
Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. I cannot make out his specialty
from his collar badges. (See Attached)

Others who were KIA or MIA the same day from Company E, 2nd Battalion:
Pvt. Brownback, William W.- MIA Died while missing June 14, 1953 Service #
52216199 PHILADELPHIA COUNTY PA
PFC Budnick, Irving C - MIA Died while missing June 14, 1953 Service #

Sgt. Zurn, Vernie A. - KIA - Jun. 14, 1953 Service # RA17365232 - Aitkin, Mn

Since the date of death is close to the signing of the armistice (July 27,
1953), battle location could be near the DMZ, perhaps in N. Korea.

The location where he was killed is now inside the DMZ.

Information included below describes the action of E Company 65th Infantry on 14 June 1953:

65th Infantry Regiment – 3RD Infantry Division
3rd Division Command Report for 65th Infantry Regiment June 1953:

On June 1st 1953 the 65th Infantry Regiment occupied the sector of Line Missouri from CT498421 to CT 543415 with the 2nd Battalion on the left and the 3rd Battalion on the right. The 1st Battalion was located at CT 536395 as a regimental reserve and in addition was charged with the reconstruction of Line Wyoming from CT 539377 to CT 558384.

During the period 1-30 June constant and vigorous command action was taken at all levels to insure continued improvement of defensive works in the assigned sector of Line Missouri. This work was personally supervised by commanders at all echelons. At the end of the period noticeable improvement was made in the deepening of trench works and installation of machine gun and rifle bunkers.

At 050800 June 1953 the relief of the 2nd Battalion was begun by the 3rd battalion of the 15th Infantry Regiment. Relief proceeded without incident until 060140 at which time responsibility for the sector passed to the control of the CO, 3rd Battalion 15th Infantry Regiment. The transfer of responsibility of this sector CT 498421 to CT 516408 from the CO, 65th Infantry Regiment to CO, 15th Infantry Regiment was made at that time.

Concurrently at 052045 June the 1st Battalion began effecting relief of the left company sector of the 1st Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment. This relief was completed at 060025, with the Commanding Officer 65th Infantry Regiment assuming responsibility for the new sector at this time. At the same time, the Commanding Officer 1st Battalion assumed responsibility for the right Company Sector of the 3rd Battalion. As of 06 June 1953 the Regiment was deployed on Line MISSOURI from CT 516408 to CT 551420 with the 3rd Battalion on the left and the 1st on the right.

On 10 June 1953 Company “F” supported by a section of tanks, conducted a raid on Hill 412 (CT 518420). The tanks moved to a position in the valley west of Hill 412 from which to support the attack of Company “F” by fire. Company “F” crossed the LD at 1200 and by 1315 was engaging an unknown number of enemy in a small arms and hand grenade firelight. At 1457 the Objective was secured, and the company was engaged in searching the area. At 1505 an estimated fifty (50) enemy countered-attacked. This counter-attack was repelled with small arms and artillery. Company “F” withdrew on order to the MLR at 1535 after completion of its mission. Friendly casualties were: Three (3) KIA and thirty-three (33) WIA. Enemy causalities were: fifty-three (53) counted KIA: Twenty-five (25) estimated KIA, and twenty-five (25) estimated WIA. The raid was very successful. (This was the raid that Company “F” received the Presidential Unit Citation for. See below)

On 10 June 1953 at about 0300 hours Company “B” of the 1st Battalion was attacked by an estimated enemy company, preceded by a barrage of approximately five hundred fifty (550) rounds ao mixed artillery and mortar fire. Shortly thereafter the enemy engaged the center platoon of Company “B” in a small arms and hand grenade firefight and succeeded in entering the trenches. Hand to hand combat continued for forty-five (45) minutes when the friendly forces counter-attacked and ejected the enemy. Action continued sporadically until 0430 at which time the enemy withdrew.

At 0530 search patrols were sent out from Company “B” which recovered pile caps, and machine gun magazines, propaganda leaflets and traces of where dead or wounded had been removed. Friendly casualties were: One (1) KIA and Fourteen (14) WIA. Enemy casualties were: Thirty (30) KI

On the night of 13-14 June 1953 Company “G” conducted a raid on Hill 412. Leaving the MLR at about 2215 hours the lead elements had reached the assault position by 0015 hours. For close support and diversion of enemy fires one (1) platoon of tanks were attached, one of which mounted a search light. The search light tank was stationed so as to light the valley to the east of the Objective.

The first assault was launched at 0039 hours and was repelled by enemy hand grenades and mortar fire, just short of the reverse slope of the trench line. At this time the tanks began receiving 82mm mortar fire and at 0104 hours the remainder of Company “G” reported receiving mixed mortar and small arms fire.

At 0245 the assault continued, but this attack was also driven back by heavy artillery fire. A withdrawal then took place in order to regroup. It is evident that the enemy was stronger than had been anticipated in both the center and right portion of the Objective.

The third assault started at 0358 hours and swept around the left flank of the high point of Hill 412. The assaulting unit cleared the top and pressed the attack along the reverse slope for seventy-five (75) yards before being stopped by overwhelming enemy fire.

At 0419 hours on order of the Regimental Commander, Company “G” returned to the MLR. During the return, the enemy continued to deliver a heavy volume of mortar fire on the safe lane used at the beginning of the raid. Because of this another safe lane was found and Company “G” closed the MLR at 0515 hours. Friendly casualties were: One (1) KIA and Thirty-three (33) WIA. Enemy casualties were: Ten (10) counted KIA, fifteen (15) estimated KIA and fifteen (15) WIA.

Company “E” also raided Hill 412 on 14 June 1953. The Company moved into an assembly area south of Company “I” at 1800. At this time the assembly area and the MLR positions of Company “I” were subjected to heavy shelling. Regardless Company “E” crossed the LD at 1900 and at 1950 commenced the assault. A platoon of tanks moved into the valley and supported the assault.

Throughout the period the enemy had delivered heavy artillery and mortar fire on the approaches to Hill 412 and Hill 412 itself. The assault was initially was successful and at 2025 the Company was engaged in mopping up the first enemy positions. At this time the enemy placed an unprecedented barrage of mortar, artillery, and rockets on the Objective and the approaches to the Objective. Due to this heavy fire the order was given to withdraw and the Company closed the MLR at 2315. During this action an estimated 10,000 rounds of hostile artillery, mortar and 132mm rockets were received. Friendly casualties for this action were: Nine (9) KIA and fifty-seven (57) WIA and four (4) MIA. Enemy casualties were: thirty (30) counted KIA, ten (10) estimated KIA, and ten (10) estimated WIA.

During the period 10through 15 June 1953 Outpost Harry, held by elements of the 15th Infantry Regiment, was attacked by large enemy forces. Throughout this period elements of the 3 Battalion 65th Infantry Regiment and its attachments rendered all available fire support to the beleaguered Outpost. This support was considered instrumental in the successful defense of the position.

Subject: My grandfather, served with Co. "F", 7th Infantry, 3rd Division, WW1. I have a old photos of him with his Company. I would like to find out the particulars of his company to determine if he was in combat, if so, what battles he may have been in and where, and when he was discharged. The most puzzling thing is that I have an old hunters license of his that shows the date of October 8, 1917. He claimed that the .45 autopistol he passed on to my father was a souvenir of the war. I traced the serial number and discovered the gun was made between Oct and Nov 1918. I'm thinking that if he had a hunter's license in Oct 1917, how could he have brought home a pistol made in 1918. Doesn't add up. But maybe there's something I don't know about his unit and maybe my grandmother bought his license for him while he was still overseas in the event he wanted to hunt if or when he came home.

Could you refer me to where I can find info on Company F?

Hi:
During the summer of 1952, I served with the 65th Puerto Rican Regiment, 3rd Infantry Div., later designated simply as the 65th Regt., as a 2nd Lt.,1st Bn., "A" Co. Since my company was the reserve company for the battalion, I pulled 23 ambush patrols out of 34 days on line (MLR) from 21July-25Aug,'52.

Many of those ambush patrols, we were taken out by a scout dog and his handler to minimize ambush by the Chinese.
What I recall was that the dog was from the 48th Scout Dog Platoon named "King" which weighed at least a 125 lbs. His alert was simply dropping his tail and pointing in direction of the enemy. He and his handler served us faithfully on the patrols without any casualties from ambushes by the enemy. I did not know that your division had a scout dog platoon. Does my memory serve me correctly?

I had the privilege of briefing General Maxwell Taylor, CO 8th Army in Seoul, Korea, January,'53 about their performance on patrols. Also, I had the story of scout dogs incorporated in an episode in the 1975 season the TV sitcom M*A*S*H*.
My question to you is simply was there a 48th scout dog platoon in Korea in the year 1952?

They were excellent animals as well as were their handlers who were subjected to constant stress and fear of repeated patrols during their tour of duty.
Sincerely,
George Bjotvedt, V.M.D.

Webmaster's Note:
Theodore,
Scout Dogs were used effectively by K. Company, 15th Infantry Regiment in 1953. Both on Combat and Ambush patrols. I don't know the K9 unit.

Please help me learn more about his earning this medal.

2nd Request:
My step sisters are also trying to find a picture of their dad when he was stationed at Camp Lajune(do not know if i spelled that right...sorry if i did not)...He was there from 1951-1955..His name was Paul Bratton Wimberly and his birthdate was 01-23-1932

Subject: Medals

Comments: Hello, about 6 or 8 months ago, I contacted a 3rd Infantry website on behalf of my brother, who was in 3rd infantry in Berlin in WWII.  He is now in a nursing home, and I was asking if there was any info or anything, on 3rd infantry, which I thought might be something he would enjoy.  I was contacted by a man who was kind enough to send me their --I don't know the correct words--medals?  The pins that look like a Rev. war hat.  He thought my brother might enjoy having them to put on his hat or shirt or  housecoat in the nursing home, and perhaps cause some questions or conversation for him.  He LOVED them, and was so proud to get them.  He still had his pins from WWII, but they were all tarnished, and apparently these are a better quality.

At any rate, he got many comments, and wore them proudly, one on each collar in front, every day since he received them.  They apparently were stolen or taken the other day, and he is really disappointed.  I wonder if there would be a way to get another set of them?  Or if you know where I might be able to get them?
Thank you so much.  Judy McKinney

Comments: I ran across your page while trying yet again to locate some old friends from days gone by. It looks like I might be able to find them through your group.

I am looking for two contacts; these were Ranks at the time I knew them:

E-5 - Sgt. Dean Hart. Last known Duty Station Ft. Stewart Ga. 1989

This one will be a bit harder, as I can not remember last name, so I will give classification, rank, year and first name which should make it possible with enough access.

Unit 3rd INF HHC, Würzburg, Germany. 1989 Lead Cook, E-6, possibly E-7 when I think in Oct, 91 when I left. First Name: Karen

If you could provide me with any information you have on these two I would be forever grateful, Due to unfortunate mishaps we have lost their info and I have tried on and off for probably a couple years now, I am just about certain they are no longer in service, as I pulled what little strings I could to locate them that way. But I am hoping and praying that you have much more success then I.

Oh! I guess you will probably want my info as well lol,
Last active status was:
Jimmy Ray Bonds Jr.
263-75-6761
E4 US Army 52D10 C-9
Last active Status, 1991 - 3rd INF DIV HHC Germany

You would make my year not just my day if you can locate contact information for these two!
Thank you!
Jim

Subject: 2nd squadron/ 2nd armory cavalry regiment ( 2/2 ACR)

Comments:  I love your website.

I'm trying to create a webpage of my military experiences and wondering if you can help.
I used to be stationed in Bamberg, Germany
My unit was: 2nd squadron/ 2nd armory cavalry regiment ( 2/2 ACR). I was in F troop.

I would like to get photos of the barracks that house the 2/2 ACR unit. I am also searching for pictures of Camp Harris in Coburg, Germany, which was the boarder camp we had to occupy in order to protect east Germany from West Germany.
Thanks for anything you can do for me. Have a nice day

Subject: Looking for anyone who knew Ollie Hamby

Comments: I am the widow of Ollie Hamby. I am trying to locate anyone who served with him in Germany in 1963-64 or in Vietnam in 1964-65. He was with company B second battalion 70th Armor SP4 at his discharge. I know he was in Munich at one point in Germany. I do not know exactly where he was at in Vietnam. He died in February of 2004 and often wondered about the guys he served with and what had happened to them since being together there. Feel free to e-mail me if that name sounds familiar. Would love to know someone who knew him then. Thank You, Sarah Hamby

Subject: 999th field artillery

Comments: I have my dad's memoirs and photos, histories etc as he died on Aug 20, 2003. He was an officer of the 999th in WW2 and I wish to ask if there is any data on any member of the 999th when attached to your outfit. If not, know anyone who might have, or is looking for 999th info. I am in contact with 3 other men of the 999th.

Comments: I'm trying to find information on my father. He served in Germany and France and fought in the battle of the bulge. I think that he received his bronze star at the bulge. He was a tank gunner or gunner's mate and his tank was severly damaged and all but my dad was killed. Any help would be appreciated

Subject: 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion

Comments: I am searching for any information on the 601st TDB. I am stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky. My unit 3d Bn, (RSTA), 4 BCT, 101 Airborne is one of the new Units of Action being formed in the Army's Transformation. We have heard rumors that we will be flagged as the 61st Cavalry. Which was taken from the 601st TDB.

Webmaster's Note: The 601st TDB was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII and is listed in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" . This book lists the action of the 3rd Division in WWII and would be a good source for information. Click Here for availability.

Subject: SSG Thomas Auld

Comments: I am hoping to correspond with people who have an interest in Fox Company, 15th Regiment 3rd ID during WWII. Specifically, during the period January 1945-July 1946. This is when my father SSG Thomas Auld served. I have some nice pictures, paperwork, and souvenirs of my fathers, and have tracked down and talked to other members of the unit-they are an extraordinary group of American heroes. I am preparing a trip to the National archives to make copies of the Regiments records during this time. Anyone who shares this interest, feel free to contact me. Jim

Webmaster's Note: Pfc Thomas Auld is listed in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" on pages 480 and 390, as a member of the Co F, 15th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal for action in Nurnberg, Germany  April 17, 1945.
