His name was Captain Shelby Ledford. We have a letter he wrote home to

Beyond that, we do not know much of anything about his military history,
what regiment he served with, which division, etc.

right before he went into the army.
The only other address I have is one in Flint, Michigan at 2239 McClean

of the army who worked at the Nuremberg Trials?

Comments: Wondering if anyone knew or had any information about my dad,
Auguste P. Valley, Jr. AKA: Gus. He served in 3rd 30th, C Company 4th
Platoon as a Machine Gunner from 1943 in North Africa to Salzburg
Germany near the end of 1945. He was with (and wounded with) Lt. Charles
Murray when Murray was cited for the M.O.H. He never got any medals
(other than good conduct, victory medal, etc) and didn't care to follow
up with getting them after the war. I know he should've received at
least 2 purple hearts. If any one has some info, I'd like to hear from
you. I'm putting together a scrap book of memories, as my Dad just went
to Heaven on 1/31/05. Thanks in advance!
Paul R. Valley
Webmaster's Note: Pfc Auguste P. Valley Jr. is listed in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry
Division in WWII" on page 531, as a member of the 30th Infantry

going down town to a few bars like the Havanna, Hillbilly and the
Milkbar, they were the big clubs back then as anyone will tell you we
spent a lot of time in the field. They were a great bunch of guys having
as much fun as the law would allow. Looking back now we were one big
family and it still that way today.
I guess the reason I am having flashbacks now is 37
years tomorrow I flew back to the states and went home. Rotating out
with me was one of the best sgt. I knew his name was Sfc. Fivish, I hope
that the spelling is right. He was shipping out to nam and never said a

please e-mail me. The 3ID is still the best the army has to offer. In
closing all I can say is "Can Do" sir. PS: Thanks for the

Subject: KIA in Saulx de Vesoul 13 September 1944
Comments:
On a recent visit to Saulx de Vesoul, the village mayor and his staff
asked if it were possible to find the names of American soldiers who
were KIA on 13 September in the attack on Saulx de Vesoul. The
regimental history states that King Company with armored support
conducted the attack. The villagers stated that two American tanks were
destroyed, and that the KIA were likely from the armored unit, which
would likely have come from the 756th Armored Battalion. Or, if they
could not tell the difference between tanks and tank destroyers,
possibly the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion.
The project officer there stated they believe there
were 9 KIA, and they would like to memorialize these soldiers on a
monument to be built in the village. Short of scouring the morning
reports, I can think of no other way of finding such information, unless
one of our veterans was actually there at the time. Any ideas?
Thanks, and Can Do!

30th Reg, 2nd Battalion, Co. E. In the history of the 3rd Division it
states that over half his company was lost on Feb 19-20 when they
counter attacked up the "Bowling Alley" near Carano, Italy. For nearly 3
decades, I have been compiling information on this action, trying to
shed light on the circumstances of his death. This has remained the
heartbreak of the family for 61 years, as he was only 19 years of age.
Is there any way to ask veterans, if any of them were in this specific

The family would be eternally grateful if we could talk to someone from
that unit.

Subject: Translator for 3rd Brigade in Iraq: June 2003
Comments:
I am looking for anyone who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom in the 3rd
Infantry Division, 7th Brigade, 2nd Battalion, Charlie Company, who
remembers an Iraqi translator named Ziad who worked with your unit for a
short period of time in June 2003. This gentleman was a doctor in Iraq
and applied for a job with the Coalition as a medic, but was given a job
as a translator instead. His English is very good; he has very pale skin
and reddish hair. He remembers working with soldiers from a unit whose
home is at Fort Stewart, Georgia.
Long story short, this man was targeted for death by insurgents for
having collaborated with the Coalition, and an attempt was made on his
life. He was forced to stop working with the Army after only a few days.
He is now in the U.S. and is seeking asylum. His asylum case is based in
part on his past collaboration with Coalition troops and in part on his
religion (Christian). I am his attorney and am trying to help him win
asylum.
If anyone remembers working with Ziad, please contact me as soon as
possible. Also, if anyone has first hand information about other
translators who were persecuted by insurgents because they helped the
3rd Infantry Division, that would be helpful.
Thank you in advance for your kind assistance. |

Subject: 9th ID transfers to 3rd ID - WWII
Comments: I am doing research on my great-uncle who served with both the
9th and 3rd ID's in WWII. Has recently come to my attention that many
9th ID soldiers were transferred to the 3rd ID, probably after North
Africa. Was wondering if anyone had information regarding this topic,
i.e. did it happen, when, why, how many, etc. Thanks. |

Comments: Enjoyed your website. My son is in the 3rd and deployed to
Iraq. My father served in the Army during WWII and is now deceased. Is
there a way I could find any information on him from that period?
My dad’s name is Woodrow Pershing Brown. I have no clue what unit he was
in. He was wounded and received a purple heart. I believe He lived in
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, when he enlisted. Thanks again.

My Grandfather Pedro O.
Castro - KIA - Please HelpComments:
Corporal Castro was a
member of the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He was KIA,
in N. Korea on 6-11-53. My family has little to no information on my
grandfather and his experiences. We know nobody that fought bravely by
his side. We are desperate to hear anything about Pedro Ortiz Castro. If
anyone has any information about him or pictures to share we would be
very grateful. No thought or remembrance is too insignificant. I thank
everyone in advanced who will help us bring some light into our lives.
God Bless.
Webmaster's note, Martin
Markley replies: In
checking records I found that he was MIA and later KIA. We had several
bodies that were not immediately recovered. His date indicates that he
died defending Outpost Harry. I sent
information to her about the battle on the night he was killed. Pedro
Castro is listed on the roster of E Company 15th Inf Regiment . |

Can you please tell me the rank and brigade number of Ryan Mazur and how
I may contact him once he reaches Iraq? Also, could I have the
information needed to post a note to him on the "Dear Soldier" page your
website provides? He should be en-route to Iraq on the fifth. He is
currently in Kuwait. Thank you so much.
Webmaster's Note:
We don't have the
resources or the authority to give out Active Duty information. If you
are a family member or know one, the 3rd Brigade of the 3rd Division has
a feature called "Dear Soldier" where messages can be passed. Click on
this link http://www.frgnews.com/dearsoldier.htm
if you know that the soldier is serving in the 3rd Brigade. Most of the
units have a FRG (Family Resources Group) where help can be found. |
