Subject: Information on grandfather, Charles (nmi) Holmes

Comments: My grandfather, Charles (nmi) Holmes was member of the 3rd Division, 76 FA, from 7-2-1917 to 10-24-1919, serving with the AEF in France and Germany. He was honorably discharged as a 2nd Lt.

My question: Are there any military records on my grandfather I might be able to obtain? I have his officers card and some basic military information he brought back, but no confidential background information. We're doing our family genealogy and we cannot find any background information on him. We could really use some help.

Comments: Hello, I'm not sure this is the right site for me but I am looking for any information about my father.

He has never talked about the 2nd W.W. until this past week (he's dying of cancer). When asked who the men on a picture with him were, he said they were Americans who he fought with in General Patton's 3rd army. He would not say much more, other than he joined before the battle of Verdun and that he walked home one day when they were fighting near Metz.

Son was Rock of the Marne

Comments: Hello - My son is still active army - 1st tour was with the 11th engineers, 3rd ID that went to Iraq. He received many citations and ribbons. He has currently been sent to Korea. Will be there 1 year. In the transfer the army has lost all his uniforms. Especially his dress uniform that has all his 11th engineer patches and pins. He has tried to and has contacted many people to try and track down his duffle. He really would like these uniforms for sentimental reasons. (He will purchase all new) but these are very special. He was in Iraqi Freedom 11th engineers Alpha Company. Bravo was Sgt Smith. He was in tip of the spear. Is there anywhere else we can get help to track down his full duffle.

Also Can my son, my husband and myself become members. He is Sgt Angelo C Fotopoulos III.

Thank you for your help and response.

Subject: 1945 Escort Detail (Polish DPs to Poland)_

Comments: In circa September 1945 I was part of a 5-man escort detail for a trainload of several hundred Polish displaced persons (DPs) being relocated from Kassel, Germany to Dziedzice, Poland (near Katowice). Travel was through Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia (and Russian-occupied territory in the latter), on into Poland. I was an MOS 745 (infantry rifleman -- with CIB) stationed at Hersfeld, Germany at the time and the 3rd Division had some of the American responsibility for transferring DPs back to their homeland. It was a memorable trip for me. I would like to learn more about events on that lengthy trip because I was able to help one of the passengers on that difficult journey for the Poles.

I later learned that contact had been reestablished with that passenger's relatives in New Jersey and subsequently some from the train were able to emigrate to the States. After the escort detail I enlisted for three years and served with occupation forces in Europe until state-side discharge in October 1948. I am seeking contact with the immigrants who successfully reached Trenton, New Jersey. I have already periodically sought them but have not yet succeeded. For many years I have thought about the travails of those DPs on that worrisome trip for them, and would like to renew my quest.

Bernard Poretz

Comments: My dad, Bernard Poretz, was a member of the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion (page 569 History of the 3rd by Taggart). Dad passed away 37 years ago. Being 18 yrs old I was too young to ask the proper questions about his time in the service. Dad would tell about humorous stories (e.g.. the time he drove his tank off a "cliff" during training at Fort Knox). I am interested in anybody's recollections of my dad from his days in the service. Thank You

Subject: Looking for anyone who might have known my dad,
Glenn Irwin Lobaugh.

Comments:
I am the daughter of Glenn Irwin Lobaugh who served in the Navy back in 1953. He was based at Millington, TN Naval Base when I was born. He was transferred to the Philippines soon after I was born in August, 1952. While there he developed Polio and within 2 days he passed away. He died June 21, 1953, 2 days before my mom and dad's 3rd Wedding Anniversary. I was just 10 months old. My mom and I had just been given our vaccines so we could go there to be with him. My mom recently passed away on Feb. 16, 2005. I know only what my mom told me about my dad. I do not know any of the friends my dad knew when he was in the service. I would like to be able to learn more about my dad. If you recognize my father's name or if you served with him, please contact me. I would appreciate it very much. He was into working with Radio and Electronics. Thank you all. And I hope to hear from anyone soon.

Subject: Searching for father

Comments: I am searching for my father.  Based on some Korean Social Service adoption paperwork he held the rank of  Private in the U.S. Army.  The documents indicate he was in a common law marriage for 1 yr with my mother SOON HEE KIM and was denied permission to bring his pregnant wife back to the United States.  It state he was 20 years old at the time.
He was stationed (in and/or around Seoul) in Korean 1965-1966? I was born 5 May 1966 or June 5 1966. Recently, personal medical problems have arisen where a family history would be quite useful regarding treatment options.
If you know of any information regarding my father please contact me at  rkisoo@aol.com . Thank you for your time.
