Subject: What role my Father, Otis Durden played in WW II

Comments:
I'm trying to find out what role my Father played in WW II. All I have is his name and number and date of activation. My Father would never talk about the war. He wouldn't even watch a WW II movie. All he ever told me that he was wounded crossing the Rhine River.
I am a history buff and would like to find out where my Father served and maybe what was his mission. Any help is appreciated.

Subject: WWII Memorial Greeters?

Comments:
I have been in contact with crew members of the USS Hadley 774 and they
indicate to me the vets would like to come see the WWII memorial next spring. My father also a crew member (deceased) would have been tickled to see such a site. My question to you is their an organization to greet a group of these vets and also advise them on places to stay in town (if affordable). Also, does the memorial put on an kind of special services to honor these vets that contributed in such a grand way in service to there country. See http://www.usshadley.com  Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Subject: Sgt. Nicholas Tgibides

Comments: Hi, my name is Nick. My grandfather was Sergeant Nicholas Tgibides, and was in the 3rd Infantry Division during World War II. Unfortunately I never met him because he passed away before I was born. I realize it is a long-shot that anyone might remember him, but I was wondering if anyone remembered serving with him and would care to email me what they remember and would care to share. It would mean a great deal to me if you could. I sincerely appreciate anything that anyone would care to share. My email is romleyni@msu.edu
Thanks,
Nick

PS: I realize that it was quite a long time ago since he served so I will include some information about him, hopefully it will jog some memories. He was in his early/mid-twenties during World War II, and finished the war as a Sergeant. He was born on a pig slaughter and maple syrup farm in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was the oldest of 8 children and was a devout Greek Orthodox Christian. After the war he moved to Washington D.C where he had two daughters, one of them being my mother and worked as a carpenter. I hope this helps. Again I realize that this could be a real long shot, but anything that you remember would be greatly appreciated. Please email me at romleyni@msu.edu Thanks again

Comments:
Mon 5/30/2005 3:56 PM

My uncle RALPH ZONTA was part of B CO 64 TANK BN (MED) 3 INF DIV (Korean War Project info) and he died on July 19, 1953. He was the driver in his tank and I managed to find out he was killed in a M-46. I have a couple of photos of his tank and it seems to be 2 toned and was wondering if anyone know the colors used as I'm building a model tank to go with his Medals to honor and remember him.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Company Photo

Comments: Great website, I do have a question concerning my fathers service with 3rd ID in WWII. I'm looking for a company photo of the company that Audie Murphy was in. My father was in the same company and Audie Murphy but in a different platoon. My father never talked about the war until he was given only 6 months to live. As a youngster our house burnt down destroying everything we owned. I have tried for year to locate any pictures where Audie Murphy’s may have posed for a company photo.

My father name was William M. Mahan. He earned the rank of SSG.

I'm currently a first sergeant of B Co 3-116 IN, 29th Infantry Division serving in Afghanistan. I have served for 28 years in the US Army. If you know or have any such pictures please let me know. They would be most appreciative. Even though my father never talked about his military service I'm extremely proud of what he did for our country and all those who have also served.
Charles R. Dunaway

Webmaster's note: SSGT William M. Mahan is listed in the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" on page 494 as a member of the 15th Infantry Regiment .

Buddy was my uncle, my mom's little brother. I've heard a lot about him over the years, and would give anything to get any information on him. He was killed on 12/24/44 in the Battle of the Bulge. He is buried in the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium. I know that it is a long shot, but if there is anyone out there who may have come in contact with him, I would love to hear from them. I plan to take my mother's ashes to Belgium at some future date and leave them with Buddy. I know that it would mean much to her. Any help you might offer would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely

Subject: Info on my grandfather updated

Comments: I have just found out that my grandfather who passed away in 1988 was in 3rd id 15th regiment CO. K . This is the latest info I can find on him and he was awarded the bronze star in France 9-18-44. I was just hoping someone would remember him. His name is Claude R. Ruggles. He had a nickname after the war "Cyke" which is what he went by for the rest of his life. It was from his boxing days they called him the "Cyclone". Don't know if he had that nickname before or after service. I also know he served from 1939 to July of 1945. He was born in Minnesota but lived most of his life in Portland Oregon. Anyone that might remember him or any info on this company would be greatly appreciated.

Marne patch history question

Comments:  Hello my name is Spc Owens and I'm preparing for a field board in Iraq. What does the green border represent on the Marne patch? No one seems to know the answer. Can u help with this question. I need it before the 1st of June . Thank u

Webmaster's note: This is what the description on the Ft. Stewart website says. The green border may just be a border with no significance. The Desert version of the patch has no green border.

Description: Upon a blue square three white stripes from heraldic sinister chief to dexter base, the blue background between the white stripes, all within a green border.

Symbolism: The blue stripes represent Infantry, loyalty and the steadfastness of American soldiers. The three diagonal white stripes designate the major operations in which the division took part up until the signing of the Armistice ( the Marne, St. Mihiel, and the Meuse-Argonne), as well as represent the numerical designation of the Division.

Subject: 3rd QMC at Ziegenheim, Germany

Comments: Hi,
I'm just asking whether there are any records of my father having been "employed" as a cook during 1945-1946 in Ziegenheim. His name is Eberhard Wilhelm Helwig. He would have been ~20yo (born 3 July 1926 at Mauer, Germany) at the time. He was an ex-German soldier who had become a POW (he had spent time in a hospital with a bad arm injury) and then sent to Ziegenheim after the war had officially ended, to work.
I have photos of him and other kitchen staff from that period. Two full names that are on photos are "Herschel L Appleton" (2 photos of this man; one of which seems to be with an eye injury) and "Eric D Hesseller" (a mess sergeant).
Would there be any records of my father somewhere and are these men still around? My father is now 79yo and an Australian citizen since 1957. Maybe the society would like to have copies of these photos and others.
Thank you for taking the time to read this note.
