Subject: History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII
Comments: A few years ago I attempted to locate information on my
father Ralph F. Deyo, who served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th
Infantry Regiment as 1st SGT. Fortunately for me his company clerk
was J. Leon Lebowitz and who was promoted to S/SGT, was able to
provide some very rewarding details. Included was a single page from
the History Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment I did
find a single error on the page and though tit might also be
contained in History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII. Is there
a means to obtain a copy of both these histories.
thank you.,

he was in the 3rd Division. He was in Italy and killed there in
combat. I do not have much info on him other than that but would
like to. He and my mother were very close. She always worried about
how he died and what exactly happened to him. I would like any info
from anyone that might have known him. I have viewed some of the
photo's that are posted by different people but I can't tell if he
might be in any of the photo's. I have a photo of him that I plan to

Subject: Noah Hodge
Comments: Noah Hodge was my father. He died a few years ago and I
would like to make contact with any one that may recognize his name.
He was stationed in South Carolina and India. In WWII. He would not
talk much about the war. Get very angry about it. Don't know who any
of his buddies were. He did not keep in contact. Would talk about
funny things that happen and mention people but not necessarily by
name. I know he had a child by a nurse in South Carolina but never
actually claimed this child as his. This is some of why he would not
talk about things. I have a couple of pictures and when I have a
chance I am going to add them to the photo page in hopes someone
will see them and recognize them. I would love any info that I can
get. |

Comments: My Grandfather is Edward E. Rund. He died last week at the
age of 83. He never would speak about his experiences during the war
but I do know that he was at Omaha beach and Battle of the Bulge.
All he would ever say was that Omaha Beach was nothing compared to
the Battle of the Bulge. That one was really horrible. We ran across
a picture of him with his buddies in his company. I also have his
dog tag. I was just wondering if anyone may have any pictures of my
Grandfather or maybe would have any more information regarding the
battalion. Thanks for your help and time. We sure tired to get him
to tell us information but we understood why he didn't want to talk
about it. He was only 22 years old and from Iowa when he entered the
Army. Quite an experience and it is a miracle he survived.

Comments: My dad served in WW1. He didn't marry until he was 54, so

Comments: My name is Tim Lucey, grandson of Robert Lucey who

several medals during the war. He received all of them but one, the
Silver Star. He claims to not really care but has mentioned this to
me several times. I was hoping that you could possibly help me in
this matter. My grandfather is in his late 80's and doesn't have
much time left on this earth. I know how proud he was to serve in
the 3rd Infantry Division because he tells me stories and wears a

REQUEST #3607
Name: Ken Crane
E-mail: roster3id@warfoto.com
and put Crane in Subject line
Subject: Pvt. Charles T. Crane

I am looking for WWII veterans who may have known my uncle, Charles
T. Crane. He served with the 3rd ID, 30th Regt, 3rd Battalion, HQ
Co. and was killed in Italy on Nov 8, 1943. The family is searching
for any information they can get about Charles. Please feel free to
contact me at
roster3id@warfoto.com and put Crane in subject line .
Comments: I am contacting you in an effort to verify the unit that my
uncle Charles T. Crane, was assigned to during WWII. We have been able to
get very little from the National Archives since a good portion of his
records “were destroyed in the archive fire”. I do have a copy of a letter
sent by my grandmother to a chaplain assigned to the 3rd ID thanking him
for the details of her son’s burial.
My uncle was killed in Italy in Nov. 1943, so it is possible he was part
of the division. My question is if there is any on-line roster that I can
search to verify if he was assigned to this division?
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated by myself and would
mean a tremendous amount to the remaining family members.
Once again, thank you for your time and for any assistance you can offer.
Sincerely,
Ken Crane
Webmaster's Note: Pvt. Charles T. Crane, KIA, is listed in the book,
"History of the the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII" as a member of the 30th
Infantry Regiment on page 513. |

Subject: Company M 30th Inf Regt/ 3rd Division
Comments: I'm in the process of piecing together my father's foot steps
during his tour of duty in WWII in the European Theater. My father PVC
John P Eastwood was a rifleman in Company M 30th Infantry Regiment 3rd
Division and saw action from 1944-1945. He was wounded in France on the
1st day of February 1945, based on his Purple Heart Certificate. My father
and mother are deceased now and all I have to work with are the dates on
his Certificates BS & PH. Reading the the World War II Combat Chronicles
of the 3rd ID he must have joined his Company shortly after the Division
hit the beaches at Anzio, 22 January 1944. I'm under the assumption that
he was wounded after the division landed at St. Tropez, and pushed up the
Rhone Valley, through the Vosges Mountains. I'm asking that if anyone has
information about Company M, or if they served with my father to please
contact me. Thank you and God Bless America John R Eastwood US Army

Subject: Camp Croft
Comments: I am looking for any stories or memories about Camp Croft in
Spartanburg South Carolina. I am a history major and I am writing my
thesis on Camp Croft. Actually, I work for the S.C. State Park Service.
Camp Croft is now a state park but unfortunately it is not represented as
it should be. I have grown up playing in the park (there are still
remnants of the training camp left) and preserving the memory of Camp
Croft has become very important to me. The camp has been overgrown with
trees over the years which is really a good thing because the deep woods
have protected evidence of the camp from being destroyed. Two bunkers have
survived that have the names of men who trained there scribbled on them.
The men also wrote where they were from and it makes you wonder if they
made it back. My ultimate goal, actually obsession, is to make Camp Croft
State Park a memorial to the men who trained there. I hope that my
research will be the ammunition I need to force the S.C. State Park
Service into recognizing Camp Croft and establishing it as a WWII
memorial. So if anyone out there has any interesting stories or memories I
would love to hear from you.
Thanks, Marie

Camp Croft Friends

You may have already heard about the new book I worked on with
the Spartanburg County Historical Association entitled "When the Soldiers Came
to Town," the story of Spartanburg's W.W.I and W.W.II army training camps. While
the chapters on Camp Wadsworth (W.W.I) and the Spartanburg Memorial Airport
(W.W.II) are very interesting, it may be the section that would best appeal to
you is the bulk of the book dedicated to the former US Army Infantry Replacement
Training Center, Camp Croft. We collected many unique pictures, several of which
appear in print for the first time. The book also includes personal interviews
and articles by Croft veterans, local citizens, and historians ... 228 pages and
over 200 images.
Some of the folks in the book include:
William Harner - interview; "Mutt" McCord - interview and captions; George
Kreger - interview; Phil & Betty Cacavalle - interview; Philip Plotkin -
captions and photos ; Joseph Jones - caption and map; Joe Hudock - photo; Frank
Bailey - captions; Harley Henderson - photos ; Joseph Pizzimenti - multiple
photos; Stephen Piazza- multiple photos ; Don Koos - caption; Walter and Evelyn
Vieth - photos ; Paul and Emily Grubb - interview; Ron Croft - interview ; "Nic"
Imbiraco - interview; Aubrey Escoffery - interview; Robert Taitt - interview;
Bill Fowler - caption; Carl Barrea - photos; John Isom - photos; Gerhard Ritters
- interview; Al Prendergast - interview; Arthur Guarrielo - photos; Walter
Gostowski - photo
