Subject: Location of 15th Inf Reg on Jul - Oct 1944
Comments: I am trying to find the location of I believe to be 15 Inf Reg
of the 3rd ID. As they traveled through a French town that sounded like
the English word 'chevy '??? My father ( His name William Fredrickson )
was a dogface soldier in this unit during this time frame. But, he lost
all his papers in a fire and his memory is fading.

REQUEST #3713
Name: Mike Kane
E-mail: mkane10136@netzero.com
Subject: T/5 Edward J Kane
Comments: My uncle's name was T/5 Edward J Kane, 5th army VI corps res.
Philadelphia Pa. either 1st armored or 13th?
US 751 Tank Battalion?or 752,756,758? I'm sorry I don't know.
I was born in 1960 my father was 40 years old so by the time I could
understand a little about the war, my older brother was close to going to
Vietnam. My father didn't like to talk to much about the war, so later in
the late 70's I started to ask questions about WW2. He told me a little
about what he did, and about my uncle.
My dad said his brother was a tank operator, and talked about Anzio. He
had letters and drawings from him like sleeping under the ground because
of the shelling, Really good drawings very detailed, unfortunately he was
KIA by mortar fire.
My quest is to find out the date so I can try to put the pieces to
together. My father died in 1990. There's only my aunt left and she not
talking. Its weird I found a letter from the mayor of New York dated 1948
to my grandfather, saying he was sorry for his loss, but like I said my
uncle was from Phila. and he must of died in or around 1944?
Well thanks again for any help you can give me. Mike |

Subject: Information on Thomas Kenneth Cunningham
Comments: My name is SFC Durry Gann (Army), I was wondering if you could
advise me on some info. My grandfather Samuel (Sam) Grover Gann, served
with the 3rd ID, I believe during Korean War. During 1945-46 to 1950.
I believe he was serving in Japan with the 8th Army which he was awarded
the Occupation Medal (Japan Clasp). From Japan he served in Korea until he
returned to FT. Bragg, NC about 1954-55 until his retirement from active
duty in Oct 1956. I've requested his records but his was burned in the
fire so they say. I have a photo at Ft. Bragg in 1954-55 where he was
wearing the 3rd ID patch on his right sleeve.
I believe after WWII he served as a Medic or Aidsman which he finished his
career at the hospital has a aidsman in Oct-1956. I have no unit
assignment history on him so I'm trying to reconstruct his military
career.
Do your contacts have any unit rosters with names or could you post any
notes on your website for anybody who my have served with him during the
Korean War.
Thanks
SFC Gann |

Comments: Hi, I'm looking for information on Thomas "Kenneth" Cunningham,
who was my uncle. I just visited his grave at the American Military
cemetery in St. Avold, France and would like to try to get more
information. He was a private from New Jersey and served with the 7th
Army, 3rd Infantry Division, 15th Infantry Regiment. He is listed as being
killed January 25, 1945.
I was told by the superintendent at the cemetery that he probably served
under General Patch and was most likely killed in the area of
Geilspolsheim, France.
I would appreciate any information or how I could research this further.

held on Thursday for thirteen fallen soldiers.
John Carrington Savannah Morning News |
|
Jennifer Giles wept as she knelt by the redbud tree
dedicated to her brother. Around her neck was a dog tag bearing her
brother's picture on one side - on the other, an inscription, "Fallen but
not Forgotten."
"Everyone says he's a hero, and he is a hero, but I think anyone that gets
up each morning and puts that uniform on is a hero," said Giles of her
brother Pfc. Landon Giles, who joined the Army right out of high school.
He had turned 19 just before he was killed in Iraq.
Giles was one of six soldiers from the 3rd Infantry Division honored in a
memorial service and tree dedication ceremony at Fort Stewart on Thursday.
Seven soldiers from other units attached to the 3rd ID were also honored.
A somber pause followed each of the names read aloud by 3rd Infantry
Division rear detachment Command Sgt. Maj. Sam Perrotta during the service
which honored those soldiers recently killed in Iraq. After each name, an
individual memorial headstone engraved with the name of the fallen soldier
was unveiled. One memorial headstone lay beside each of the 13 eastern
redbud trees planted in their memory along Warriors' Walk, a sidewalk
flanked by rows of trees dedicated to the fallen after the 2003 invasion
of Iraq.
Lt. Col. Noel Nicolle, 3rd ID rear detachment commander, described the
redbuds as symbols of freedom and the sacrifices made by these soldiers to
preserve it. Quoting Thomas Jefferson Nicolle said, sometimes the tree of
freedom has to be nourished by the blood of patriots. He also reminded the
family members attending the service that the sacrifices their loved ones
made were for noble reasons.
Kim Giles recalled her son's decision to join the army. "He was doing it
so his family could remain free and help the people in the other country
to have a little bit of what we have here," she said. He knew when he
joined he would go to Iraq she added.
Pfc. Giles and fellow soldier Pfc. Min S. Choi were killed in February
when their humvee was hit by enemy fire. Members of both families attended
the service.
Michael Deem, father of Spc. Michael S. Deem was also in attendance. Deem
recalled giving his son some articles he had carried while serving in
Vietnam - things he thought might bring his son good luck. The articles
were returned with the rest of his son's belongings. "We're all really
going to miss him. I know his wife especially and his kids are going to
miss him," said Deem as he stood by the redbud planted for his son. "Now
his youngest son will never know his father." |

there any maps available from that period to show where we were located?

All the books written about the war don't say much about the action at

Comments: Does anyone have recordings of the 3ID Band from 98 -2001
when I feel our band was at it's best. We played a reunion in Savannah and
pulled off several grade six pieces. I've contacted the old commander
(Matthew Morse), but he doesn't respond. I was hoping to have these for my
personal collection (played principal clarinet, flute, oboe, bassoon, and
sax along with the duties of S-4). Although I got out under less than
favorable conditions, that has been reversed and now have my Honorable
discharged and am disabled. I also have tons of photos of the band from
that era (we had more C1 players than the band had ever had) if anyone is
interested. I've tried the Army Bands websites, but there seems to be a
problem. Thought maybe this society could help since the band did a lot of
hard work (more than most people know) and think that these recordings
should be preserved for time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Dean Stanley Rogers
Comments: I'm searching for the military records of my father from WWI:
Dean Stanley Rogers He was born on May 18 or 19, 1898 in Bemidji, MN and
enlisted in the Army on November 19, 1917 in St. Louis MO. He was sent to
Fort Riley to boot camp and then on to the front in France. His "Wounded
in Action" certificate signed by Woodrow Wilson says that he was wounded
on July 25, 1918. I know that he was a medic in the trenches above the
Marne for 17 days without food or water in July 1918, was pushed back into
Belleau Wood, and gassed with mustard gas before he was taken to a field
hospital, (I think it was Base Hospital 46) where he survived the mustard
gas and "shell shock" but suffered permanent serious damage to his heart.
Unable to return to the front, he became a cook for the hospital until the
end of the war. He was separated from his unit and it took him over a year
to get back to the US when the war was over. Unfortunately he died in 1964
just before we were going to visit France as a family. My mother and I
went 2 years later and visited Chateau Theirry, Belleau Wood, and the
large cemetery in the area.
His "wounded in action" certificate states that he was Private 1st Class,
Headquarters, 3rd Division Sn.Tn., which I am beginning to understand may
be a abbreviation of "sanitary train". I do not know what that is, but
would love to hear some background.
Any facts you could supply regarding his service would be greatly
appreciated, as I have many questions as an adult that I did not think to
ask when he was still alive. If you have any records, photos, etc they
would be greatly appreciated. He was a wonderful husband and father.

REQUEST #3674
Name: Alan Brainard
E-mail: abbrain@comcast.net
Subject: Roger Weaver, Korean War
Comments: It is my understanding that during the early months of the
Korean War, that units of the 3rd inf. were detached to a provisional
regiment being formed at Ft. Devons for deployment to Korea. I believe my
uncle Roger Weaver may have been one of those soldiers. I know after basic
at Ft. Dix, he was assigned to Ft. Devons, but I don't know if he was ever
part of the 3rd inf.. or if he was assigned directly to the provisional
regiment. He was upon assignment to Korea, placed into the 3rd batt. 8th
Cav. 1st Cav. Div. sometime in early Sept. 1950.
If you could shed any light on this, I would be deeply appreciative.
Thank You
Alan BrainardAlan,
The 7th Infantry Regiment, of the Third Infantry Division was
probably his unit. I will forward your mail to some of them. They
may be able to help.

was a part of the Anzio - Nettuno break out in Ialy. He was later wounded
enroute to Rome but returned in time to participate in the landing in
Southern France and continued on through the Colmar Pocket engagement into
