REQUEST #3780
Name: Wallace Webster
E-mail:
wfwebster@frontiernet.net
Subject: Raymond Crooks, Father-in-law's service
Comments: I have been trying to help my wife to find out where and when
her father, Raymond Crooks, won a silver star and purple heart while in
the Army in WWII. He entered the Army on December 12, 1940 and was
invalided back to the United States with a leg wound sometime in 1945. He
was discharged from McCaw Hospital in Walla Walla, WA on May 9, 1945. His
unit was listed as 3rd Signal Company, and his rank as Technician Fifth
Grade on his discharge. Based on my research, I believe he probably served
in the 3rd Signal Company, 15th Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. We have
his Silver Star, and the Purple Heart he received for his leg wound, but
don't have the citations which would go with these medals. Raymond Crooks
died in 1951 and all information the family had about his wartime service
has been lost. We would like to know if we are correct about his service
with the 3rd ID, and any information about where and when he won these
medals.
Webmaster's note: Raymond M. Crooks T/5, 3d
Signal Co, was awarded the Silver Star for action in Italy, on Feb.29,
1944. This is from the book "History of the 3rd Infantry Division in WWII"
on page 391. He is also listed as a member of the 3d Signal Co. on page
556. There are two websites that you may find interesting concerning the
15th Signal Co.

Subject: My Father's service in WWII
Comments: Dear Sirs: I am trying to find any information about my fathers
service in Europe during WWII. I believe he arrived at Utah beach on D-day
plus 2. Is there any way to find out where he fought or decorations he
received? All I know is that he participated in the Battle of the Bulge
and also in the defense of Antwerp with the 125th anti-aircraft artillery
unit during the V-2 rocket attacks in the winter of 44-45. He was probably
a captain at the time. His name is Peter F. Ramme and his serial # was
0392694. I thank you for any information you may have. |

Through his buddies and friends my mother learned Harry came back to the
states to Ft. Dix , New Jersey . I have done numerous searches with no
luck ,we know Harry was married to a school teacher and had 2 children by
her. Harry was also 10-20 yrs older then my mother, who is now 69.
Do to so many years we are no positive of the spelling of his last name so
a picture would be great. My mother had to destroy all when she married my
father)
My brother really needs to know his family any help would be greatly
appreciated, if not to meet Harry but, his siblings, as Harry might not
still be alive... if you can help in any way please e-mail me @

E-mail: alforensicpsyc@aol.com
Subject: WWII 342nd Inf, Co. G
Comments: Greetings:
I have recently unearthed a collection of war-time pictures relating to my
grandfather, Edward D. Wandtke. As apparently common with other veterans,
he spoke minimally about the war and has since passed away (1993). The
pictures suggest he was a member of the 342nd Infantry, Company G and I
know for a fact he was part of both the European and South Pacific
offensives. While in the South Pacific he contracted malaria and was sent
home. Some pictures suggest he assisted in the liberation of a
POW/concentration camp in Europe, possibly Dachau. As an aside, his
brother, Le Roy Wandtke also served in WWII although I have nothing
further on his involvement. I would greatly appreciate any personal
information regarding Edward's (or Le Roy's) unit and the unit's
participation in WWII. I am completing a family genealogy project and
would truly enjoy having this info.

City, State: Palmer, Alaska
E-mail: akbaby23@yahoo.com
Subject: I am searching the Internet for my real father
Comments: My name is Christian Bjorn Rye. I live in Alaska and I am
searching the Internet for my real father. His name is William R Harris
and he served in the United States Army in Germany in 1968.
The only thing I have from him is an envelope he sent to my mother
while he was still there dated August 22, 1968.
The return address shows:
SP/5 William R. Harris
RA 13986480
Co. A 10th Engr. 3rd Inf. Div.
APO, NY 09702
It says Army 886/7212 on the back of the envelope and a number by itself
that reads 09721.
I don't know if you can help me or not, but I thought I would try. I have
tried military websites and cannot come up with any specific data. I
am 37 years old now and wish to find my father. I would appreciate it if
you would return with an answer even if you cannot help me.
Thank you,
Christian Rye |

Subject: General Walton H. Walker photos of Memorial Service, Dec. 23,
1950
Comments: I saw a photo of General Walton H. Walker in last weeks Army
Times. George and Andy and myself were part of a provisional 8th Army
reconnaissance unit (502d Recon Platoon (Prov). Is there a way to find out
if there are Army photos still available of the memorial services held in
Yokohama, Japan (Dec '50) before the general was flown to Arlington for
burial?
He was killed in an auto accident in Korea on December 23, 1950. The
series of photos of particular interest are of this service in Yokohama.
The pictures show Gunderson, Shelton and myself as well as other soldiers
in the (502d Recon) honor guard.
