Subject: Joseph Mannion

Comments: I'm the very proud son of Joseph Mannion (of Montclair NJ), who served with the 3rd in North Africa through Italy. When he shipped his purple heart home, it indicated membership in the HQ company. I'm not sure how long he was in that company, but if any of you happen to know of him, please, by all means, drop me a note.
Dad died in 1972, and I know little about his participation. Certainly nothing he liked to chat about casually. It must have been very gruesome work. I had the pleasure of meeting many of his comrades at their reunion in San Diego 10 years ago. They relayed the same sentiments.
Just a proud son stopping by to honor his dad and his buddies. God bless you all.

Subject: History of the Aviation units associated with the 3ID

Comments: I am interested in finding out as much about the history of the aviation units associated with the 3ID as possible. I’m taking over command of the Aviation Brigade this summer and I am curious as to the background of the organization. I have found what I believe is the original motto, Ex Alis Pugnamus and would like to know the English translation and any history behind the motto. I believe it means something close to From/On Wings we Fight, but not sure.

Subject: WW II re-enacting

Comments: I was hoping that you could possibly help me. My husband is interested in the WW II re-enacting. He was maybe thinking about becoming part of a group. But it seems that he is more interested in re-enacting as a news correspondent. Could you possibly tell me if there is a particular group that I could contact?

We were at the Reading WW II weekend a few weeks ago and there were a lot of people dressed as the media and that is where he got the idea.
Thanks

Subject: William Ellis, Niagara County New York

Comments: My mother recently gave my son a purple heart given to her family when her brother, William Ellis, was killed in WWII. The only information we have on William Ellis is date of birth, November 25, 1913 Date of death Sept 17, 1944. His grave marker is imprinted with PVT 30 INF 3 INF DIV World War II what does this mean? He was killed in action. How do we find out where he was killed and learn about his division's involvement in the war? We were given a photo of him standing in front of a ruin in Italy. Thank you.

Webmaster's Note: Pvt William D. Lewis is listed as KIA (Killed in Action)  in the Roster section of the book, "History of the 3rd Infantry Division, in WWII" as a member of the 30th Infantry Regiment on page 515.

I am looking to put together a history for his grandkids. The military records were destroyed in the 1973 fire, and all I could get was his form 53-55. He was wounded twice but the records say once, I remember him saying he was wounded twice he has 2 purple hearts. He said he was with George Myford, (spelling could be wrong) when 88mm art. shrapnel got them, He recalls Gen. Patton visiting the hospital they were in handing out Awards, He told me of liberating a concentration camp but not knowing the name He also told he was presumed KIA ,only to surface later to rejoin his squad. I would appreciate any info anyone could have on him ,it would mean a great deal to his family. Thank You

Comments: I am looking for anyone who knew my father, Tsgt. Floyd Adams in WWII. He was a replacement in N. Africa, and was in Sicily, Italy (Anzio), and France. He won the silver star, bronze star, and two purple hearts. He was shot near the French / German border. I am especially interested in anyone who knows of an action where he led two men into a ditch full of 20-30 Germans and they killed or captured all of them. The other two men received silver stars, but my dad got some shrapnel in his ass the next day and was in a field hospital when they got the medals, and didn't get his. The story of how he got the one silver star is in the History of the 3rd Division.

Comments: My dad's name is Frank L Sterken Jr.
He was with the 3rd division 7th infantry according to his discharge papers. But in his photo he is wearing the 30th Infantry pin on his lapel. He was in Sicily, South Africa, Tunisia. I think between 1941-1943. He was a Sergeant.
Any info would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you.
