Subject: O'Brien, James Perhouse Pte 1st Class 'H' Co 15th Inf 3 Div US Army

Comments: The above soldier James O'Brien appears in the Books of Remembrance in the Town Hall Bournemouth Dorset UK. The entry is as shown.
I have tried previously to trace him, particularly to establish why he is in these Books. It is likely he was killed in action sometime WW2, he may have come from Bournemouth and moved to USA before WW2 or he might be related to some one who lived/still lives in Bournemouth.
I am currently putting all the names that are on Memorials in Bournemouth Churches etc onto CD so that it can become a ref tool in the main reference library.
I hope you can help.
Best Wishes
Roger Coleman
PS I am an old 30 year service regular soldier in the British Infantry.

Roger,
This may not help, but a Pfc. John P. O'Brien is listed in the Book History of the Third Infantry Division in World War II on page 497 as a member of the 15th Infantry Regiment, Killed in Action.

Subject: WWII Editions of Division Newspaper

Comments: I am interested in how I can find issues of the 1945-46 newsletter of the Third Infantry Division in Germany. I don't know if it has the same name as your newsletter. What museums would have issues from that time?
My uncle, Thomas Lucier, who is still alive and very healthy, joined the Third Infantry as a journalist in 1945, immediately after high school and was stationed in immediate post war Germany (Bavaria) to interview and write stories from combat soldiers. He was stationed in a castle or such headquarters where interviews of combat soldiers took place.
Some of his stories appearing in the Division newspaper were then picked up by The Stars and Stripes newspaper. My uncle, Thomas Lucier, does not have any copies of his stories and I am interested in finding them for his four children and his many nieces and nephews to enjoy.
I also think he could produce a book about his memories as his mind is very sharp and he is as excellent story teller. (He won a Pulitzer prize in Journalism later in his newspaper career!) I am encouraging him in this by searching for his war stories of the Third Division. I hope to archive what I can in North Dakota's WWII Veterans History Project.  www.state.nd.us/hist  as well as other places.
Thomas Lucier was the fifth son in his family to join the war effort and is the only one alive today. I am trying to learn what I can to memorialize all five brothers, one of whom died in a glider accident in England after taking part in the invasion of Normandy and Holland.
Thank you for any leads about where your newsletters are archived. The Stars and Stripes Museum that I contacted said they will not be able to do a search for a number of years.

His name was Ralph Lovell Kelley. He has passed away, I am his only son and desperately trying to find info on dad. He would not talk of his army tour. Unless it was something real funny. He did tell me he went over on the Queen Elizabeth, and returned on the Pontotoc Victory ship. I do have his discharge papers. I want any info that I can get. I want to know what units he was with and where. Or if anyone knew him. I am trying to get this info together for his grand children. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You.

Subject: 319th Cannon

Comments: Am looking for any info on George Tallmadge Jr. My father passed away 2 weeks ago at the Iowa VA and though he had told me about WWII and his exploits with the 319th cannon we have no photos or details about the people he served with.
There is a photo on http://www.ww2-airborne.us/units/319/319.html  and the man in the back left is listed as 'unknown' or 'possibly' Joe Guislimo but it really looks like my father. I'm pretty certain he mentioned a friend named Joe but how many 'Joe's' are there in a war? I know he had gone through Italy and France and eventually served under Patton. His time there was between June 1944 and Nov 1945. At that time, in civilian life, he was a Portrait Photographer in Texas. The problem with my recollection is my father saying he was at Normandy and yet, from what I can find out, 319th was airlifted into France via gliders.
Would appreciate any help and especially any photos.

Subject: Archie B. Mitchell WW2 records

I am looking for any information on my father's service in WW 2. I contacted the National Personnel Records Center and received his discharge papers and was told that his military records were destroyed in a fire in 1973.

Is there any way I can get more info? He was in the military for 2 years eight months and saw active duty overseas from July 1944 through February 1945. I believe that he went to a military hospital in Nancy, France to be treated for frozen feet and was then shipped home. I think that he may have suffered from shell shock also. He was an Infantry Unit Commander Archie B. Mitchell serial number 01 286 871 1st Lieutenant born June 14 1919. He served in two fronts Southern France and Rhineland.

I am looking for a timeline of what specific action and areas the 15th infantry, Co. G, 3rd Division might have been involved in as well as what happened to him and why he was sent home. Up until he died, he was haunted by the war and he raise us four children alone so I am directly effected by all of this and would like to understand more about what influenced his alcoholism and the ghost he lived and died with. Even on his death bed he was underlining information in Audie Murphy's book To Hell and Back to try to preserve what he saw; however, he never spoke about it much because it was too painful

If you have any information or can steer me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Subject: British Royal Engineers at Berchtesgaden

Comments: Good morning, my name is Peter Saunders and I wonder if you may be able to help me regarding Berchtesgaden in 1945,
I understand that the 3rd Division were the first at Berchtesgaden.
We were handed an item see below, from my father in law who was in the British Royal Engineers and we understood from him that he removed this from Berchtesgaden, on examination we found inside the front and back padding 8 envelopes each containing dental x rays of 7 men and 1 woman all with dates, names and file numbers.

Would it be possible to find out if the Royal Engineers were seconded or attached to the 3rd during this time, any help would be much appreciated as these x rays are of identification and with the folders initials of JG we wonder just what we may have.

Thanking you in advance

Subject: Belgian Korean War Veterans

Comments: To whom it may concern,

I work in the Defense Attache Office in Brussels, Belgium and have been contacted by an individual that fought with the Belgian United Nations Command (B.U.N.C.) during the Korean War. The question has been posed if they are entitled to wear the Combat Infantry Badge. I have searched and have not been able to prove one way or the other that they can/cannot. I have seen on websites that they were awarded this badge, but cannot find anything official. I have a letter from MG Blount from 2002 addressing this issue, but no response from as of yet. I am hoping you can provide some insight on this matter.

Thanks for the help.
Chance

From Martin Markley:
The Combat Infantryman's Badge is awarded to US Army Infantrymen in US Army Infantry Units who engage in direct combat with the enemy. Unfortunately, I don't believe that a Belgian soldier would fit the criteria.
