Subject: Donald Lee Herst Discharge Info

Comments: I'm trying to find the discharge dates from the Army for my late uncle Don Lee Herst. He passed away a number of years ago, and now my aunt who is close to 90, and needing some assistance needs to find out any info on his discharge dates. We have tried the National Record bank but so far no luck. He was born Livingston, IL and was a Staff Sergeant in World War II. He also served briefly in Korea but when his CO found out he served in WWII he was shipped home. He lived in Lake Geneva and Elkhorn, WI for a majority of his life till he passed away. He has a bumper sticker in his den from your group so we were hoping your files may have some info.
Hope you can help!!

Webmaster's Note: In the book "History of the 3rd Infantry Division, in WWII" Donald L. Herst is listed as a member of the 15th Infantry Regiment as a T/5. Go to our FAQ page http://www.warfoto.com/3rdsocietyfaq.htm  for listings of places that might have the information you. need.

Comments: Hello. My late grandfather, John Leicht, served during WW2 with Co. B, 7th Infantry, 3rd ID as a 2nd/1st lieutenant. I recently separated from the Marine Corps and I am working on a book about him and his unit. One of the things I am trying to do is find out if there are any veterans still living that either served with him or knew him as I would like to compile some interviews too. Is there a way I can place an ad in the 3ID Society newsletter or do you have other suggestions?

Thank you for all your help.

William (Bill) Ganis

Comments: My 93 year of grandfather,
William (Bill) Ganis is a WWII veteran who was in the Battle of the Bulge. I am trying to find someone who can interview him for the  Veterans
History Project. My Grandfather has always been extremely reluctant to discuss  his war participation with me but has said that he would open up for an interview. I am certain he would not open up to me, his granddaughter.

I, also a veteran, am currently working in Iraq, making it very difficult to find someone to help me complete the interview before, well,,, he is 93 years old. He lives in St. Petersburg Florida. Any assistance or direction you can give me in this endeavor would be greatly appreciated.

I only know they were nicknamed something like the "Bastards of Bastogne" b/c they had no real assigned position, they just went to wherever more firepower was needed.

I was in the Navy for 9 years and am in Iraq as a civilian. I mostly work with reserve and national guard units in support of the biometric identification system. I am on a small base that is near Victory, but I believe most of the 3rd ID would probably be on Victory itself or other FOBS.

Thank you very much for your willingness to help with my grandfather. Have a wonderful holiday season.
Thank you,

Marie

Comments: I am the son of the late Emerson B. DeLaney Sr who apparently served with the 3rd during roughly 1944/1945'ish. He trained in Alaska, possibly with the First Special Service Force, I my only recollection of his comments about his service was the "Rock of the Marne." I'm trying to find out as much as I can about his service to our country. I am a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Marines still on Active Duty, and I would love to know more about my Dad. He was originally from the Midwest, and his parents were Charles and Nellie DeLaney. I don't know a whole lot more than that, but I do recollect him showing me a photo album that was prepared by his old unit about his training in Alaska.

Comments: I am trying to obtain information about my father's military record during WWII. I have learned that his records were destroyed in a fire at the Military Archives in St. Louis in the early 70's. However, this is what I recall from stories my Dad told me when I was a kid as my father died in 1984 from cancer at the age of 60. He was a private in the 3rd Army under Patton, and landed in France in August of 1944. He took the Queen Mary across the Atlantic to England. He obtained several battlefield promotions, and rose to the rank of Master Sergeant and was in command of a 50 caliber machine gun squad. He saw action, and was wounded at least twice. His Purple Hearts were sent home, and were lost. I hope to have these reissued some day, but due to the lost records it has been a real run-around. From what I recall, my Dad indicated that he was demoted back to the rank of private after either sassing, or slapping, an officer. His last wound was in the neck, and he was sent back to a hospital in France, and then back to the States. I am not sure when he was discharged, but I am assuming it was sometime in late 1945. I do have his dog tags, his sergeant stripes, and a picture of him just after he was discharged at the ripe old age of 21. Any information on how to obtain his records, medals, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks - Evan N. Leander
