Request: My father, John Lindell Delay, born 7/20/1918 Advance, Missouri was inducted into
the Army at Detroit, Michigan (#36 505 126) 0n 6/10/1942. He received training at
Fort Totten for the 62nd Coastal Artillery Anti-Aircraft Gunnery. Was shipped to
Glasgow, Scotland where he received more training whereupon he volunteered for the Rangers. As best his memory serves him there was a Captain Wentworth who
sailed with them on the SS Uruguay and led them ashore at Arzew. He was later injured at the Battle for Hill 609 on February 1943. He was taken to the 37th
Evacuation Hospital at St Cloud, He was transferred to 40th Station at Arzew, then to 12th General at Oran, then to 6th General at Casablanca.
He was placed on the SS Uruguay for the trip home. The ship was torpedoed and sunk about 4 hours out of port. he was rescued, returned to Casablanca and placed
on the SS Monterey, returning to Brooklyn, New York from Africa Base Command on 4/21/1943. Transferred to Halleran General Hospital, transferred to Walter Reed
Hospital, Transferred to Fort Meyer, War Department Detachment.
Some other names that he does remember are: Sgt. Krause, Lt. Saterian, Lt. Yandel and Captain
Stackhouse. He received a Certificate of Disability; 2nd Ind Hq WRGH AMC WDC dtd 10/23/1943. He was discharged 10/30/1943. His Veterans
Administration Number is C-3432791. He now resides in Flint, Michigan at 3419 Brookgate 48507, (810) 233-7509.We have contacted the army and the Disabled
American Veterans for a copy of his records. We have been informed that there was
a fire in St Louis at the records library, they cannot help us. My question to you is,
do you have any kind of lists or rosters that would show that in fact he was with the
Rangers??? Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated, and whatever monetary needs there would be, we would be more than happy to pay.

Request: I am looking for any information or for someone who may have served with my father-in-law, Frank Joseph Pistone Sr. He was
in Italy, France in the 3rd division, 7th infantry. I am currently helping him write about his experience there.
Sun, 25 Jun 2000
Dear Cheryl Pistone ,
In re your search for vets who served with your father in law I think you have hit some pay dirt
, perhaps. I was a platoon leader (and later company commander) in Company L of the 7th Infantry in the ending months
of WWII. One of my men, as indicated in a small note book carried in my pocket (and to some extent from my memory) was a trooper named FRANK
PISTONE. He surely must have been the same as your FRANK JOSEPH PISTONE??
I mentioned him briefly in my book AUTOBAHN TO BERCHTESGADEN that is now out of print on page 495.... that page is buried in many pages describing
our campaign into the through Germany....the book also deals with actions in Italy and before...I was in a different company in the 7th in Italy so
would not necessarily have come into contact with your fatehr in law then
or there....the campaign activities, however, would have been the same whether I mentioned him or not...
In the next few days I will send you normal mails a few pages from my book of that period....if you so desire
I could also send you a copy of my book that I keep around for loan purposes....your only cost would be
postage with the expectation that you would return promptly and safely.
In the meantime, it comes to mind that one other trooper from those days that I have maintained some contact with and that should known and
probably now still remembers your father in law is one James Tubman, 232 A Medford Court, Manalapan NJ 07726. We were in regular contact in the
90s but not recently...so can't guarantee that he is still around...other troopers that I know to have been in my unit are gone - so no point in
naming them for you....but I will do a bit of research and see if can find some others....our Platoon Sgt was one Higgins, but no idea where he
is now.....Perhaps Tubman may know??
I commend you for your efforts to restore the record of your father in law...I have long felt that descendants of vets should more often do
so..less they be overlooked and forgotten for all time....

Request: My stepfather, Private David C. Collinsworth, Serial No. 38525325, was a rifleman in Co. E, 15th Infantry Regiment in January
1945. He was in combat from about January 14, 1945 until he was wounded on January 30. He spoke very little about his experience.
The few times he did talk he told about crossing a river under fire. He did not know how to swim and said that he never knew how he got
from one side to the other. He only remembers that he did. He also spoke of wading in snow knee to waist deep. He said that on one
occasion they came upon some Americans the Germans had taken prisoner, tied to trees, and killed.
Does anyone remember him or know of the actions or incidents of which he spoke? I never pressed him to talk of his memories, but wish I had. Now that he is gone I
have no more opportunity to learn. Can anyone help me?

William Ripley
email: snafu947@yahoo.com
Comments: Hello there. I am writing in hope of getting some help from any and all veterans of WWII who may read this. My name is William
Ripley. I am 28 years old and a graduate of Ball State University of Muncie, Indiana, where I majored in History. In 1986 I founded a small
WWII living history organization. It has since grown to include both US and foreign uniforms weapons, equipment, and personal items. There
is no building yet, but the items are taken on display to schools, libraries, historical societies, and the like many times a year. In 1987 I
began contacting veterans of WWII. To date over 4,100 veterans from 35 countries have been contacted. All the replies are being compiled
into a book on veteran "war stories" telling of the war as seen by the VETERAN, not some "official" source or Hollywood ideal. That is the
purpose of this message.
Please find below some questions. If you are a veteran of WWII, please take a moment to answer them and send
the reply to snafu947@yahoo.com. Also, if you could pass this along to other veterans you know, I would be very appreciative.
-Name, rank, unit -Please describe a particular time in combat. -Were you wounded? If so, please describe the particulars surrounding your wounding. -If
you weren't in combat, what is the most memorable experience you had while in the service? -While no day in the military is "typical",
especially while in combat, how did you spend a "typical" day in the field? -What, if anything, was the funniest thing to happen to you while in
the military? -What sort of personal items (toiletries, letters, paper goods, etc) did you carry with you?
Thank you all in advance, and I hope to hear from many of you soon. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you.

Request: I believe my father, Charles Grant Westcott, of Minneapolis, MN, who died when I was a child, served with the Third Infantry
Division as a medic during the Second World War. I have his old "Rock of Marne" shoulder patch and photos of him during the war that
my mother gave to me before she too passed away recently. I know little if anything of his involvement in the war. I can remember asking
him a number of times of what he did in the war, as children do about things they are curious about. He always looked sullen when I
asked and never replied a single word. My mother told me many years after his death that he served during the battle for the Rhineland
and saw heavy fighting. Now as an adult I realize that my innocent questions as child must have
stirred some difficult memories for him as the war at that time was only the recent past. I would like to pass down some of his history, and his unit to my children, hopefully before it
is all lost within my family. If anyone knew my father or could help me find out more regarding the efforts of the Medical Battalion during the war it would be greatly
appreciated. I just happened to search the web and found this wonderful site. I would like to become an associate member in memory of
my father. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Subject: Offz. Hein Berchtesgaden
Hello, Just found your terrific website. I bought a silver knife, called a
fishknife, from a dealer, who buys from
veterans. This knife is marked "Offz. Hein Berchtesgaden" Were there many, many silver utensils removed from the eagles nest?
This veteran lived in Northern Mass. Thank you,
Re: "Were there many silver utensils removed from the eagle's nest?" It's
safe to say yes! The GI's removed anything of value that could be carried (and much that could not) from the
Berghof, the Eagles' Nest and the concrete
air raid shelters beneath them. I got two Minox spy cameras, my CO got Hermann Goering's Mercedes and our mess sergeant got an OPEL kitchen truck.
(All property of the Nazi State, not civilian citizens.)

Comments: I am looking for any vets who may have served with Benard Bartkowiak, served from
2-3-42 to 10-7-44 when he was killed in southern France. He was a Pfc in the 3rd Division. His
service number was 35 273 754. He was from Cleveland, Ohio. I received all of Uncle Ben's war
memorabilia when his sister, my aunt passed away. I know he served in the Sicily and Anzio
campaigns. He was wounded at Anzio. I have little info on what happened when he was killed in
southern France and no one is alive in my family who can tell me anything. Any info would be
greatly appreciated. When my great-aunt recently passed away, she left my mother and I
mementos of my great uncle, PFC Benedict Bartkowiak, who was killed in action on 10/7/44 somewhere in southern France. We have his pictures and dog
tags, but I know very little of where he served or what he did while serving his country. I want to find out as much as I can. All his brothers and sisters are dead and I don't have many people I can ask questions. please e-mail me back with suggestions as to where I might locate any
surviving comrades or other info. thanks.
