Subject: 2828th Combat Engineers

Comments: My Grandfather, Franklin G. Butler, was discharged as a Sgt. with Company A 2828th Engineer Combat Battalion 6 December 1945.
I find very little on the internet about the 2828th. It appears that they were attached to the 3rd. But I am not sure.
I have been reading about Audie Murphy and It seems that my grandfather could possible have been in the same areas that he fought in. He never talked about the War and passed away in 1986. I never got the chance to ask him about his experience in Europe. I would love to know about this part of his life. I do have a couple of what I would call rosters that indicate his group for the day or whatever that he saved. From my recollection they don't have the same men on either list. They are typed on real thin onion skin paper.
His discarch card shows he was in Southern France GO 33 WD 45, Rome-Arno Rhineland G0 40 WD 45 and Central Europe GO 48 WD 45. I was wondering what the letters and numbers mean.
Thank you

This might be the place if you are looking for information on a buddy or family member, who was killed during Wartime Service, and who is still buried in one of the American cemeteries in Europe. The American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) was established by Congress in 1923 to commemorate the service, sacrifice and achievements of U.S. Armed Forces where they have served overseas since 1917, and within the U.S. when directed by public law.

Subject: Heavy Mortar Company 65th Inf. Regt. Korea 1953

Comments: I am looking for men I served with during the Korean War.

After coming off line with the 40th Infantry Division, 224th Regiment at the very beginning of February 1953 I was reassigned as cadre to the 65th Infantry Regiment and as a sergeant I helped reform the regiment’s Heavy Mortar Company. I remained with the company until August 1953. There were some of those men on the ship that brought us home.
Anyone who was there at that time or remember me please get in touch.

Subject: Blood debt

Comments: For many years now, the Harriman Wreath Company has donated 5000 wreaths every year to decorate the graves at Arlington National Cemetery. The gentleman responsible for this never served in the military, and refuses all attempts to compensate himself for this activity. I am a persistent irritant, and when I tell you that he refuses to be compensated or recognized for this activity, you can take it from me that this powerful and moving tribute is not motivated by anything but respect for our fallen.

Before our country won the war of independence, commissions in the armed services of this country were awarded to those who were able to contribute to the cause. Based on this man's contributions, I believe that his service should also be recognized, and if it is possible, I would suggest and honorary commission in the Old Guard.

Years after the lessons of Vietnam, our troops are once again under attack from forces hoping for our ultimate defeat. In the face of this, the emotional support of people like Mr. Harriman is crucial for our continued survival.

I have no personal relationship with Mr. Harriman, and if he were aware of my petition, he would probably be abashed. But such endeavor must abe recognized if we are to survive. In any event, please respond. W-

Subject: Pvt 1st Class Ralph William Moore

Comments: I am looking for any further information you may have about my husband's Uncle Bill, or those who may have known him or fought with him. My husband is the only son of an only surviving son. His dad also fought in the war, but was sent home when his brother died.

Ralph William Moore is buried at Epinal American Cemetery (Plot A, Row 24, Grave 5), and was KIA 3 Feb 1945. His serial # is 36171562. He is listed as having been in the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, but I don't know what company, or any of it's history. I have no idea how to get more information about his WWII service. I have never done this type of research before. Bill's parents are both dead now, of course. He had no wife or family. I would assume either his sister Lorraine or my father-in-law Donald would be considered his next of kin. As such, my husband, his father, and our little boy are the only remaining male members of the family.

The family STILL weeps whenever Bill is mentioned. We honor his memory.

Thank you in advance for your help,
Katharine Moore

Webmaster's note: Pfc Ralph W. Moore co M 7th Inf Regt was awarded the silver Star posthumously for action  in France on Feb. 3, 1945. This was noted in the book "History of the 3rd Infantry Division, in WWII"on page 402.

Subject: Saranac Lake Veteran

Comments: My mother-in-law, Ethel Rose Smith Healy, was in the Army Corps of Nursing during WWII. Her father was John A. Smith, Saranac Lake Postmaster. Unfortunately, in 1973 millions of veterans’ records were lost in a catastrophic fire.

Ethel Smith Healy’s granddaughter, Stephanie Healy, has been awarded the Texas Bluebonnet Girls State Award by the American Legion. Since Stephanie has received this award and is the descendant of a war-time veteran, she is eligible to apply for the Samsung American Legion Scholars Scholarship. The scholarship must be accompanied by proof of military service, the DD-214 form. Mrs. Healy passed away here in Houston on December 26, 2004, and was buried in Saranac Lake with her parents.

Would you have any files archived that could help us prove Ethel Smith’s military service. My husband believes that she enlisted in March of 1943. She served for fourteen months in the China, Burma, Pakistan Theater; and she was awarded the rank of Captain on March 14, 1947.

We will be very grateful for any help you can offer us. If you have any questions that we might could answer to help you retrieve information for us, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks for your help,
Denise Elkins Healy

Subject: Unknown Soldier
I know this is a long-shot, but I'm trying to find out any information possible about this soldier. This picture was found in my grandmother's belongings after she passed. Considering the soldier looks very much like myself and my father, we suspect it is my grandfather. This picture was taken probably just after WWII (after 1947). I'm trying to find out anything regarding the truck in the background or possibly something distinguishing about his uniform.

Under a magnifying glass, the patch on his shoulder may be a Patton "Hell on Wheels" patch, but that is just a guess.

The only rumor we have heard is that he was injured (not killed) in a vehicle accident in Germany. He is most likely from Tennessee; either Nashville, Knoxville or Hickman County. Thank you for any information you may be able to provide!

Comments: I am a graphic artist working for Shopper's Guide, a division of Advo, Inc. in Cherry Hill, NJ 08034. We have a weekly publication and are honoring our heroes who were in the armed forces and have since died. It will be a 4 page full color tribute free of charge for anyone who wants to honor their loved ones. Our free publication is mailed to 358,000+ homes in New Jersey. Though the deadline is over because this goes to press Friday, 05-25-2007, we had a very elderly woman come in today with some spotty information about her beloved husband. She was in tears because she couldn't find a single picture of him. I am hoping you can find some kind of photo of him or his unit. I will use in the promo and also frame the photo for the woman. I have been searching on my home computer for about 3 hours and this is the information I could fine: Moncrief, Benjamin Washington, b. 02/22/1892, d. 11/09/1946, PVT 1/CL PARK BATTERY 3RD CORPS ARTILLERY PARK W W I, Plot: E EXT1124, bur. 11/14/1946. Subject: Looking for info about 2nd BN, 30th Inf Reg during WW2

Comments: Hello, I am hoping someone can help me find out some information.
I recently found out that my grandfather (CPL Raymond W. Sawdey) was an MP in F Co, 2nd Bn, 30th Inf Reg during WW2. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/3 Bronze Stars. I have been able to find general information about the medal and where his battalion was during WW2, but not specific information about which campaigns he would have been involved in to receive the 3 bronze stars.
I am also wondering if anyone may have known him of may remember him. He was from Mellen, WI. He was probably single. His older brother was also in the Army (in the pacific theater) during WW2. His father was a Bugeler in the Navy during WW1 and served aboard the USS Michigan.

Subject: Rumor or Fact

Comments:  Hopefully you can answer this for me. On a homesteading board I frequent, we have a fellow who claims to have served with the 3rd Inf as a combat engineer.

He has been making claims that as said engineer, he was also an ADM, which as far as I can tell implies he worked with nuclear demo. Anyway, he's claiming that while rebuilding bridges overseas, his unit was involved in rigging the new bridges with pre-planted demolition charges, nuclear or conventional, "Just in case".

My reason for asking is twofold. The first, obviously, is to prove whether or not this yahoo is a BS artist. The second, well, I would think that pre planting explosives especially nukes, on a bridge in foreign nation and then bragging about it would violate several secrecy acts, as well as royally irritate the nation in question.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Comments: I received a call concerning 3rd Infantry Division soldier, Sgt Corey Seymour, who killed himself this week. He ETS'd from active duty 9 months ago (honorable discharge). The family indicated he suffered from post traumatic stress disorder. He served two tours in Iraq. Family has no money to bury him. The cost is $5,800. Over $500 has been raised locally. Does your association have emergency funds? Are there other associations that might help? We continue to seek a solution. The POC for the funding is Glenn Suthpin (1-850-591-3079).

Comments: Hi,I am a volunteer with the American Veterans Center in Washington DC. We are organizing the National Memorial Day Parade to be held in Washington on 28 May 2007. Subject: Palermo, Sicily, WWll, American Soldier killed in church

Comments: Dear Sir/Madam,

I was told by a citizen of Palermo that during WWll an (unknown) American soldier was killed in a church in Palermo for trying to save it's Jewish citizens. I was also told that because of his heroic deed, Jewish citizens put a stain glass window in his honor. I would like to know if this is a fact and if so, in which church did this occur.

Thanking you in advance for your assistance.
