#4244
Name Bob Muncy
Email: silveravion@frontiernet.net
If possible, can you post this request as many veterans on your
web-site were transported to Korea on the USNS Marine Adder ? I was
replying to a request by Heidi458@aol.com Thanks, my name is Robert
J. Muncy
and my E-mail address is:
silveravion@frontiernet.net
I ran across your post about your father during the Korean War, and
even though it was dated in 2003, I thought I would partially answer
one of your questions. I was the senior Yeoman (Navy ) on board this
transport from July 1950 until about May 1951, making several
cruises with about 3,000 troops each time -- the first voyage was
from San Francisco and then after that, from Seattle (Pier 91). With
the Army representative, I checked each passenger's name on the
passenger list -- we would call the name as each one boarded. The
Marine Adder received a number of battle stars (I believe 8) during
the Korean War -- receiving one each time the ship entered a combat
zone (such as Inchon, Pusan, etc.) -- we rescued a number of women,
older men, and children when the Chinese overpowered our forces and
caused a withdrawal in December 1950.
These refugees were taken south and transferred to a Japanese
minesweeper which I think transported them to a camp in Japan. One
little boy, about 10, was so frightened that he was shaking and
crying and during the time we had these refugees on board, would not
leave me. I cried too. Apparently, his parents had been killed. They
were in a fishing boat that was sinking in Inchon harbor. This was
around Christmas 1950. We were one of the last ships to leave the
harbor, after our demolition team night sky as far as you could see.
Yes, I believe the Marine Adder is still afloat, but has a different
name as it was sold to a private shipping firm and made into a
freight ship. During the Vietnam war, the Marine Adder made a name
for itself in transporting refugees away from Viet Nam.
I am not at home at this time so I must give this info from memory
-- I have materials about the later history of the Marine Adder. If
you can do an on-line search, using the name USNS MARINE ADDER T-AP
193 I think you can find sources about this.
A final word: I am now 77. After 6 years in the Navy, I went back to
college and finally became a college teacher, retiring 15 years ago.
My wife and I have been married 59 years and live in Tennessee. War
is a bad thing and should be avoided if at all possible. Sometimes,
war is necessary -- I'm not sure about Korea, Viet Nam, or Iraq. Of
these, I
believe Korea can be justified more easily than the other two.
Veterans who fought in this pretty nasty war endured a lot. I am
proud to fly the flag and honor all veterans. Robert (Bob) J. Muncy |

Subject: 3rd US infantry division helmet patch
Comments: I'm a German collector of US Military items! I've a
question about the above mentioned patch. A few days ago, I have
bought helmet patches for my PASGT helmet with 3 color desert cover
! It shows the "Marne" patch of the 3rd US ID desert colored!
But there is one difference!
There are three dark brown stripes and the rest is bright desert
colored! Against the patches on fotos of your web site ! There are
four dark brown stripes and the rest is bright desert colored!
Some one said it in the sniper version, and an other said it is an
Theatre made (Iraque made) patch where they had changed the stripes!
If it is the sniper version, mustn't be there the "SNIPER"-texture
above the patch? Or is it unusual for helmet patches to stew the
texture "SNIPER" additionally on the helmet cover ?
Thank you for an request!
Best regards
P.S. forgive me my English! It`s not my native language! Good old
Germany ist speaking ;0) |

Comments: In the " Watch on the Rhine " from 2004 , I inserted a
notice of RICHARD SCHOWALTER who did his basic training with me ,
shipped out on the QUEEN MARY together , joined company " K " and
crossed into " NO MANS LAND " together in " OPERATION GRANDSLAM " .
Immediately upon crossing a little bridge we were hit by machine gun
fire and found ourselves in a Shue mine field , in passing thru the
field I stepped over what appeared to be Richard , but with
everything going on I didn't stop to take a good look. I always
wondered if that were he as I didn't see him in the P.O.W. camp.
Since
2004 I have received 2 " E " mails concerning him. One was from a
man Belgium who searched 17 W.W.II cemeteries and had not found his
name , he suggested that perhaps he had been sent back to the
States. Early this year I received another " E " mail from a cousin
of Richards who informed he was buried in LADYSMITH, WISCONSIN, his
hometown . |

Comments: Trying to information on a American gi based near Thetford
Norfolk england this soldier was friendly with our family we have a
photo of him sent from Naples, Italy saying going home 31-7-1944 we
believe he was on the d day landings we have been in touch with nara
and we know he was in one of two field hospitals the 32nd or the
186th we can only presume he was wounded on the back of the photo it
reads (ptc g h kiel 36313675 ist.ord.co,then it looks like amm.provs
a.p.o 635 us army). Does anyone know what that means and what unit
did he belong to we are trying to find out more about him we believe
he may have died but would like to contact any living siblings to
see if they would like the photo and anything else we can tell them
about his time in England as he saw quite a lot of the family and
was good to them as things were very difficult during the war years
hope someone can help. thanks Dave |

Comments: I served as driver/draftsman, driving the BG CO's (Col.
John Davis) field office in 1960 as part of S-3, 1st BG, 7th Inf,
3rd Inf Div. At that time the good general was promoted to 1st Lt.
He and his wife had their 2nd child then. He was a fine officer and
we were fortunate to enjoy his good humor and fair treatment. I have
been trying to locate him for the past 5 years and stumbled onto
this site. I hope we can connect before we're both too old to
remember or care. I was 23 then and am 71+ now. I returned to
Germany 3 times and visited Aschaffenburg twice. Hope to make a
connection.

Subject: WW I search
Comments: I am searching for information regarding Sergeant William
Bradley Cravens who served in the 3rd ID from 6 April 1917 to 30
March 1920 and from 14 April 1920 to 13 April 1923. Specifically, I
am trying to track down information about him by researching his
unit as his info was mostly destroyed in the St. Louis fire. His
collar brass indicates that he was in the 43rd MG or HQ. I can't
tell which exactly from the photo. Does anyone know if either of
these units existed? I know that he served in France and that at
some point he was in Utah (Ft. Douglas?) and in Louisiana (unknown
post).
Can anyone help? Thanks. |

Also, he played in a baseball league in Germany during his

Subject: Photo Identification

Comments: Could anyone identify the soldiers in the attached photo?
I know it is tall order and a long shot. The shoulder patch of the
soldier in the center (right) tells me that he was from the 3rd.
Infantry Division. The second man from the left is an Italian
civilian who was a barber at the Us Army 38th. Med Evac Hospital in
Riardo, (Caserta) Italy (near Cassino). The photo was taken in
Riardo likely in late 1942 or early 1943. With the exception of the
first lady on the left (likely a nurse from the 38th. I do know the
identities of the rest of the ladies).
Should anyone recognize any of the people in the picture, I would
welcome hearing from them.
Thank you.
