REQUEST #4284
Name: Stephen Ward
E-mail:
photographsandscars@hotmail.com
Subject: Hi, my name is Stephen Ward. I found you guys on
Google and have a quick question for you. In high school I wrote my
senior paper about the media in the 21st century and how it affected
my generation's view of the greatest generation, i.e. Saving Private
Ryan, etc. I'm now 23 and an Iraqi Freedom veteran and I am trying
to get in touch with a man I interviewed from the 3rd ID who served
in France and Italy by the name of Willis Daniel. I just really want
to talk to him after all these years being that I am now a combat
veteran myself and can relate to some of the things he told me about
when I was a young man working on a paper who couldn't quite grasp
the combat experiences he so vividly told me about. Anyway, thanks
in advance for any info.
Cheers,
Stephen Ward |

He was a soldier of the 3. Infantry Division, stayed in Germany in

He's born in March 1925 in or near Akron, Ohio. His brother was a

Maybe you can help me.

Subject: Looking For anyone
Comments: Looking for any Veterans who served with 3ID at Battle of
the Bulge, with General Patton. My father was with 4ID, and served
with 3ID at this Battle. He was my dad and he died in 1980 and I'm
trying to find anyone who may have known him. He was also CIC
(Counter Intelligence Corps).
Thanks.
JulieWebmaster's Note: It
is a common mis-conception that the 3rd Infantry Division was
engaged in the Battle of the Bulge, however the truth is that it was
the 3rd Armored Division that fought with Gen. Patton. At the time
of the Battle of the Bulge, the 3rd Infantry Division was fighting
in the Colmar Pocket in Southern France.
From Martin Markley: The 3rd Armored Division in WWII was
in the First Army. The commander was General Rose.
Patton
was the 3rd Army commander
for awhile during WWII.
The request (4280) was about the 4th Infantry Division which was in
the Third Army. It might
help to refer them to the 4th Infantry Division website.
http://www.4thinfantry.org/
http://pao.hood.army.mil/4ID/
The Third Infantry
Division was a part of the 5th Army during WWII.

Comments: I AM LOOKING FOR ANYONE WHO SERVED IN THE LATE 60'S AND
70'S IN GERMANY WHO KNOWS FIRST HAND OF THE RACE RIOTS THAT OCCURRED
ON MILITARY INSTALLATIONS IN PARTICULAR NELLIGAN BARRACKS AND
KRABBENLOCH KASERNE.
WHETHER IT IS A NEWS ARTICLE OR FIRST HAND ACCOUNT WHICH WOULD BE
BETTER. I AM TRYING TO ASSIST AN ARMY VETERAN WHO HAS PLACED A CLAIM
WITH THE VA FOR HIS COMPENSATION AND HAS BEEN DENIED AS THE MILITARY
IS DENYING THAT ANY SUCH EVENTS EVER OCCURRED. WHICH IS IRONICAL
BECAUSE THE INSTALLATION WHICH HAD THE MOST PUBLIC MEDIA ATTENTION
THE 34TH SIGNAL BN WHERE OFFICERS HAD TO CARRY SIDE ARMS WITH LIVE
AMMO. IN THE 60'S DUE TO THE RACE RIOTS. IF ANYONE IS FAMILIAR WITH
KRABBENLOCH IT IS JUST BARRACKS AND EQUIPMENT AS OUR MISSION WAS
SIGNAL COMBAT SUPPORT AND OUR JOB WAS ALWAYS IN THE FIELD.
AND IN 1976 ANOTHER RACE RIOT BROKE OUT AND I WAS THE STAFF DUTY
OFFICER THAT NIGHT.
ANYTHING YOU CAN DO TO HELP THIS VETERAN I WOULD BE APPRECIATED. TOO
MANY FOR TOO LONG HAVE SUFFERED FROM THEIR MILITARY SERVICE TO THE
COUNTRY WE LOVED SO MUCH THAT WE PROMISED OUR LIVES FOR.

Subject: Jeep Driver World War II
Comments: My Dad "Edward Nichols" had always said he was a jeep
driver for General Mark Clark in Italy during World War II. Is there
any record of this anywhere ? My father died in 2004, and I would
consider it an honor to have a written record of his service in
World War II.
A story from WWII, per my late father. He was driving General Mark
Clark, and was ordered to pull over at a certain location on the
road. He said that for some reason, he did not want to stop there
and drove on a short distance to another spot. The jeep behind them
stopped at the first location, and all the men were killed by a land
mine. General Clark said, Ed the next time I tell you to stop, you
decide where and when to stop. |

Comments: Hello, My husband SSG Richard Gooding is a member of the
3rd ID society and we went to Walter Reed after the Wreath laying on
May 30th to visit 3rd ID soldiers that are currently treated at
Walter Reed. We were told that we need to make appointments first to
visit any soldiers, which we totally understand. I was wondering if
you can provide me with contact information or Monica's contact
info, so I can get in touch with her to arrange a visit to soldiers
that are currently treated at Walter Reed and what they need. I also
need Mr. Brown's phone number, who I think would be able to set up
time for a visit to one of the soldiers. I think he is the liaison
between Ft. Stewart and Walter Reed and the person to talk to to
arrange any visits.
Thank you.
Kind regards,
Stefanie Gooding

Subject: PFC Ernest W. Booth (Gus)
Comments: Regarding PFC Ernest W. Booth (Gus) 3rd id, 15th regiment,
2nd battalion, company G in Korean War. I am interested in finding
someone who may have served with my daddy, who passed away 29 years
ago. I am interested in knowing about his experiences in Korea.
Daddy was with the 3rd id (see info above) arriving in Korea
11/11/50. He was seriously injured 1/31/51 when a grenade was thrown
toward him. It blew his eye out of the socket where it hung on his
cheek as well as other injuries. When he was returned to duty, he
was with the 95th Chemical Service Company, 4th Chemical Smoke
Generator Battalion as far as I know. I have found a picture of him
with the 3rd Ranger Division in April 1951 on many Korean War
websites. He is the tall soldier checking the equipment of another
soldier's backpack. Daddy was not a Ranger to my knowledge. I have
been told that he was "point man" for his company. Daddy had red
hair, blue eyes, freckles, and a square chin. He was from Georgia
and was only 19 years old in Korea. Some stories I heard from him
included eating "dog stew," having received chocolate mint candy as
a gift & sharing (rationing) it with his fellow soldiers when they
were without food in cold weather for days, hand to hand combat, and
in a situation where only 11 of them survived. There were many
stories, but these come to my mind now. I would like to know
anything and everything about him if you served with him. He was
also stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC; Ft. McClellan, AL; Camp Atterbury;
Sasebo, Japan. |

Subject: Book - The History of the Third Infantry Division in Korea,
by Max Dolcater
Comments: Dear Sirs,
I have been trying to find a copy of The History of the Third
Infantry Division in Korea, by Max Dolcater. I served with the
division in, 'A' Battery of the 10th FA (105's) from November 1950
to November 1951. I'm now 78 and my children have asked me to write
about my military service while I still have my memory. I can
remember events and places but not times or the names of places. I
believe this book might help. Does anyone have a copy for sale or
loan.
Thanking you for any help you can give me.
Respectfully, Fred Olds |
