Dear fellow members of the Society of the Third
Infantry Division and guests:
Our Society has sponsored battlefield tours throughout
the years, and now we are very excited about plans for our next tour in
August 2009, to commemorate the 65th Anniversary of our fighting
in Italy and France.
In 2004, for our 60th Anniversary tour, the
French government paid special attention to the landings in Southern
France. We participated in ceremonies at the American Cemetery at
Draguignan and aboard the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. French
President Chirac and presidents of 15 countries plus the King of Morocco
were in attendance.
The 50th anniversary tour marked our
fighting in Africa, Sicily, Italy, France, Germany and Austria. We visited
all of these countries in 1994, and the highlight was ceremonies at the
American Cemetery at Anzio-Nettuno. President Clinton, his Cabinet, members
of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Senate and House of Representatives were
in attendance to commemorate the arduous combat in Sicily and Italy.
A highlight of the 2009, tour will be events in
Southern France where we will be honored by local dignitaries and residents
with special ceremonies and a parade to commemorate our landings on August
15, 1944. Our tour will also visit cities and villages along our battle
route through the Rhone Valley, the Vosges Mountains, the Alsace Plain to
Strasbourg and the Colmar areas.
We are fortunate to again have Josiane Selvage
join us as our French tour guide. Many of you will remember her from our
tour in 2004, and know what a wonderful dimension she adds to the group.
The French and Italian people have always extended gracious hospitality to
veterans and their guests, and they greatly appreciate their liberation.
We are also offering an optional two-night tour of
Italy. It includes the Anzio-Nettuno battle areas, and we have also
scheduled time for sightseeing in Rome.As we plan this tour a year out, it
is difficult to be specific about some events. To enrich the tour, we will
add special events to the itinerary as we work with our friends in France.
We have always had wonderful experiences on these
tours, and I hope you will join us. If you are interested, we need to
know as soon as possible. Sincerely, John Shirley Tour Organizer
