Bill's basic Training was at Camp Croft in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and then he was sent to Casablanca, French Morocco in late 1943. During the eight months before they were again committed to combat, the 3rd Division turned to the east where the slow, terrible drama of Tunisia was being enacted; and finally toward Sicily, where the Division itself was to participate in one of the great amphibious assaults of World War II.
